El Rio Grande!

Dilson may be the answer. He may be an excellent player long-term. But his wet-noodle hitting was as much a part of the mid-season slog last year as anything. I'm all for his return, but I don't think these things are as much of a no-brainer as that. You need a guy for a handful of days, you don't know how much he's going to play, then I have no problem with them going for a guy who plays all over the field and is hitting near .400, over a guy who is hitting .280, has only played one position that is currently staffed ably, and disappointed in a long audition last summer. As of now, it hasn't worked, and a bigger, long-term decision lays in front, but I'm not sure the last decision, though it didn't work, was decidedly wrong at the time, with all the evidence on the table that was available at the time. Hindsight and all. I'm all for position switching, however, and I think that Terry's shyness and deference on the subject is counter-productive. It may even be called a weakness. With luck, maybe Wright will take a few minutes off from whatever crap he is dealing with, call Walker, and suggest he volunteer to switch.

He was this magical enigma — on one hand, a short old bespectacled baldy surrounded by lunky and sinewy young jocks, on the other, he always looked like he would go to the grave with secrets no torturer could extract.

Is Seattle now a hitting team, or are the Pads that bad? Because it seemed like just yesterday that 47 runs was Seattle's typical monthly output.

This ought to be a 17-0 slaughterhouse, but for the kind-hearted mercy of the Mets.

The SABR Bio Project lands the golden fleece of baseball bios. After the United States entered the war, Niss served as Brooklyn sports chairman in the drive to sell war bonds. His total of $100 million in sales was his proudest achievement. The effort included staging a number of benefit shows at Ebbets Field. One such show, on April 13, 1944, featured Frank Sinatra at the height of his early popularity as a singer. Niss later told his son Steve how it happened. An Eagle reporter saw Sinatra in a restaurant; the reporter called Niss and asked if he should approach the star about taking part. Lou was doubtful, but said to ask anyway. Sinatra replied that he had heard about the good work and that he would definitely be there. There was skepticism about whether “The Voice” would really show up, but he did – photos of the day show him wearing a Dodgers cap. It was the only time Niss met Sinatra, but his impressions were very positive. Niss’s social consciousness was visible when the Dodgers signed Jackie Robinson for their farm team in Montreal in late October 1945. Soon thereafter, Michael Carter, a columnist for The Afro-American, observed that Niss “long ago recommended that colored players start in the minor leagues and work up. Any other technique would alienate white players who had to start that way. Today Lou seems to be justified.” Niss has received no mention in the many books that have been published about Robinson, Rickey, and “The Great Experiment.” Yet his son Steve states that, “Next to Rickey, Dad was one of the most important people in this endeavor. He worked very closely with Rickey to insure that when Robinson was brought to the majors, they had done everything possible to make the transition smooth and accepting.” To insure this, Niss spent many hours working with community and church leaders, as well as those within baseball. Without his efforts, it might not as been as successful as it was. Niss emphasized team unity, regardless of skin color. When pitchers and catchers reported to spring training in February 1962, there were two African-Americans among them: Al Jackson and Choo-Choo Coleman. Milton Gross of the New York Post wrote, “They are the first Negro players in baseball history to be living and eating at the same hotel with their white teammates at a permanent training base in Florida.” In Gross’s account, they went for a walk after breakfast, and Niss introduced himself, encouraging them to join the rest of the club for the bus ride to the ballpark. Niss said, “We’re all here together. If anything bothers you, tell me. That’s my job. I’m getting paid to see that all the players are comfortable. Impressive legacy for a guy who you might have thought was just about making sure John Stearns got late-night room service.

If last year is anything of an indicator, it's that the team would rather work internally, while working for the right deal, than get squeezed up front.

Of course, that accepts at face value that all of his latter-day production was juice-generated, which is easy enough to theorize, but harder to establish.

Sure, but Mattingly hung on for years and years playing a sub-optimal level. Pretty much 1990 to 1995. Of course, you can say that Wright already has half or more of those six years behind him, but not all of his drop off has been back-related. I'm happy to lay 100 sugarbucks on Wright capturing the record.

Hmmm...

At least 99 documented Native American combatants were killed at Little Big Horn, not including the Native American scouts that US Calvary was using. So using that precedent, Wright should fly past Strawberry easy.

We'll know a lot more in a day or so, but things tend to wind down, rather than abruptly stop, especially for a guy on a long-term deal, so I voted yea. He was hitting when the neck thing hit him, and that doesn't seem as career threatening as the stenoisis. Unless it is. Or unless they're somehow linked, like Columbo insinuates.

Seven walks and only one run.

These Sox were not a good enough team to come back on us last night. And they certainly had no business out-bullpenning us.

I don't know if this Synderelief thing is going to work, but I want to kiss Terry for trying it.

Putnam should be on the Mets

Now he's got the jitters. What a slow thread. People are more enthused about the Dilson factor than the game, as the Mets' lead gets cut to 4-2.

Nice to see the hitting coach going up and down the dugout looking for fist bumps after successful situational hitting.

Latos is the type of mook who takes it personally if you beat him with the butcher boy. I really applaud that sort of play.

Meantimes, Loney may end up setting the team's putout record in his first game.
