Photo Essay of Disco Demolition Day: http://www.dawhitephotography.com/disco-demolition What a day to be young, white, and high. May be the whitest ballpark crowd since integration. Amazing that a landmark game of the seventies coincided with one of the appearances of the Sox in shorts.

Mets Guy in Michigan wrote: Is there another new AL stadium besides MFY III? We don't want the game headed back there any time soon. Newness isn't everything. Oldness is good too. Middle-agedness isn't so bad, come to think of it. Hey, I fixed it, too!

Good work Mets. I told you that extra $1 was the key.

"And this may be our first 600-lb showdown in All-Star history. We have the boys at Elias looking into that. Translate that into kilos for the viewers overseas, would you, fellas? So, Tom, I hear you had the honor to attend Derek and Hannah's wedding ... "

I'm thinking of 1977, when Stearns made it as the third catcher despite a poor first half, as somebody from the Mets had to appear, and Seaver had been exiled. By the end of the season, Steve Henderson was their best player, but he was only a few weeks into his career. I was 10, was up until 11 o'clock, and for my trouble, I got to see John Stearns' all-star ass in the midst of a less than stellar year, warming up Goose Gossage, and then standing with his hips cocked as Boomer Scott homered and circled the bases with a two-run blast. Dude would never get to the plate with a chance to redeem himself for whatever his part in that homer was. Bleh to fashion show baseball.
-
Yeah, at 11 and everything.
-
Terry's all about honor. And you know he's going to exercise his obligation to every other team first. But guys, I have to say, staying up for the whole game at 11 years old in 1978, and getting to see the John Stearns catch the ninth, didn't really do that much for me. Ephemeral appearances just to air every team's laundry, rather than deliver a thrill to every fan base, actually deliver an equal lack of thrills to all of them. Play competitive baseball, rather than a fashion show, and the thrills will come.
-
Bench otherwise burned. Terry, you pyromaniac.
-
Familia's young. Coln is the one to watch out for.
-
The reason is probably that the current schedule of All Star Games is concentrated in NL parks, so they have to come up with a dumb non-solution by making the AL the home team in the odd NL park. I see Terry's losing a lead to the Royals again.
-
Props to whichever editor called for that parallel shot of the Dodgers and the Clones.

G-Fafif wrote: The player introductions will be the highlight. Anything else is gravy. Terry said he offered Jake a spot but was turned down, with JdG preferring to rest. I assume that's the one that went to Bartolo. A report of Jake turning down an All-Star slot is disappointing to me. A report of Jake explicitly deferring to Bartolo is far more encouraging. A subtle distinction that means everything.

Belfast Boy is undeterred by the promotion to the Florida State League, having launched with a 2-0 record and a 2.33 ERA, giving him an overall 10-1, 1.97 mark. He's given up one homer in 27 innings as a Floridian. In celebration, his birthplace of Northern Ireland is making noise about uniting with the Republic of Irleand.

Normally, I'd say this looks like the Smitty and Rosario show. (Both, not so coincidentally are currently on leave as they head to San Diego to be make-believe big-leaguers.) But while the former has been interesting, backing off the contact and displaying run-producer power this season, the latter has been a rock show. And we're talking Jimi at Monterey. The Clash on Broadway. Somehow, he's slugging over .600 without hitting any homers, having amassed five doubles and three triples already in just 59 at-bats at AA. There are a bunch of shortstops ahead of him. Phil Evans was until a few weeks ago. He's having a perfectly good season, but he's been knocked over to second and the rest of them — Niuman Romero, Matt Reynolds, Gavin Cecchini, Wilmer Flores, José Reyes, and Asdrubal Cabrera — could all be similarly kicked aside in the next 10-20 months. That's two first-round picks, a second-rounder, two former Futures games participants, and two All Stars, all in his path, and he's set to mow them on down. Bullpen-wise, this has been a really nice bounce back for David Roseboom, who spit last season between Low-A and High-A. He was great in the former and bad in the latter, but got a promotion to AA anyhow and has been perhaps their top reliever. Wow, Kong '79 was only 20.
-
I went with Cabrera, and indeed he's second on the team in WAR among hitters. But I honestly need to be changing my vote. It's Céspedes, pole to pole.
-
Can we get a UMDB daiquiri with regard to who are the all-time leaders in RBI against the Mets in a single season? I would bet Daniel's fellow ex-Met Dave Kingman 1979 is the leader, but I'd also expect Muffy to be pretty close.
-
I certainly see the futility of the offense as the main factor in the Mets losing. But here they were, down by a run despite all that. One thing about a manager who works to find an edge, it sets a standard for players who work to find an edge. Because I don't see that.
-
I think the reason it wasn't done is because it traditionally isn't done. There are some ways honor-bound and tradition-bound managers and GMs just don't look for an edge. It's an agreement so implicit, many wouldn't even think of doing it. Then a young guy comes in and does it and everybody hates him for 15 minutes — but it's in fact perfectly legitimate, defensible, and obvious, and they're all doing it the next year.
-
Mets in the Futures Game: Dilson Herrera, who qualifies despite 169 plate appearances in the bigs, goes 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI. He struck out in his first trip to the plate on a questionable call. Amed Rosario, became the third Mets shortstop prospect to participate in the futures game. The previous two (José Reyes and Wilmer Flores) have returned to/remained in the organization and so make an interesting triumvirate. Rosario also went 1-2 with a run scored. The one Mets prospect to play the whole game was first baseman Dominic Smith, who went 0-4 but picked up and RBI. The MVP was Red Sox uber-prospect Yoan Monocada. But I'd've voted for Cubs prospect Eloy Jiminez, who went 2-3 with a double and a homer, knocked in four, and pulled off this nifty catch, prompting a Three-Dog Night/Laura Nyro reference. But it's politics. It's all politics.
-
Well, the Mets didn't lose the game in the pen. Teams have sometimes sent down players with options just before the All Star break to be certain they kept getting their work in. There isn't a lot of precedent for teams sending down pitchers with options in order to get a few more bats for the last game or two, and assuming their off-day starters can pick up the slack. Not that it isn't a good idea. You may not want to interrupt Conforto's season, but there's also Kelly, Reynolds, Herrera, and Campbell as options. Plawecki too. A better move than sending down Lugo (or DL'ing Syndergaard), would have been to send down Verrett, who wasn't going to pitch under any circumstances.

Funny that he's swinging a hot bat, and our offense has gone south. I guess that happens when he arrives and Céspedes promptly gets hurt, and he also displaces Flores in the lineup. Reyes has taken over Granderson's solo-homerun-specialist role.

IGT 07/10 - Nationals at Mets - Time to Rock Yet Again!

Nymr83 wrote: Nymr83 wrote: i'd rather see Syndergaard with the tying run on 2nd needing a single instead of deAza with the tying run on 1st needing a double. its possible Syndergaard wasnt available either... I'd use deGrom. That's some really stretchy thinking. And that's even ignoring the fact that you need James Loney to get you from one scenario to the other. No - my argument is that you are in a better position with Loney up compared to de Aza - even if you think they'll walk him. if they don't walk him then you undeniably have the better hitter at the plate anyway. What would you do if you were the Nationals' manager and Loney comes up with Cespedes holding a bat on deck? unless you have a mole in the Mets locker room telling you Cespedes can't swing is there really any way you can chance pitching around Loney? Terry outsmarted himself by only taking into account what he knew and not thinking of what the Nats didn't know. I certainly agree that I would have sent Cspedes to the on-deck circle.
