  1. The term "over home plate" certainly seems to describe three-dimensional space. But, by definition, "area" describes a two-dimensional space. We have ambiguity.
  2. I'm not sure I agree. The rulebook may support me or refute me, but I tend to think a strike is a strike based on where the pitch crosses the plane perpendicular to the front edge of the plate.

  4. Yeah, it's important not use the word "suspended" with regard to Steinbrenner. Dude was banned. And that ban wasn't lifted based on any vindication or penitential act on his part. The politics of the situation just changed and he lined up votes in his corner. I'm going with Jerry DiPoto as my Bowling Green guy. OE: Nope, VCU.
  5. With all the roster and lineup opinionating, this is the trickiest call for Terry Collins. Do you go for the high upside of Duda, the lower floor of Loney, or do you totally roll the dice with a righthanded surprise?
  6. I'm still angry at the Indians and Marlins for playing the most boring World Series in history.
  7. Yeah, it's more Gumbel I'm speaking about here. He doesn't read as a baseball fan but more of a guy trying to assume the pose of the type of baseball fan he thinks he's supposed to be.
  8. No, I think the strike zone would have to be arbitrarily set by a former ump who is now a robo-ump operator. Trying to put electronic sensors on the batters would be undermined by the players night and day — adjusting how they wear their uniforms and ducking out of their stances on high pitches and such.
  9. That's because there are no memories to be had. It was Renteria who was a Cubs skipper before taking over the Sox.
  10. 42 stolen bases on the entire year after 51 the year before.
  11. According to John Ricco, most Wild Card teams go with a nine or ten-man pitching staff, and 15 or 16 hitters. I imagine he wouldn't make that observation unless they were going in the same direction. I guess a nine-man staff would be (1) Syndergaard, (2) Colon, (3) Familia, (4) Reed, (5) Salas, (6) Blevins, (7) Robles, (8) Smoker, and (9) Goeddel. The potential 10th would be Henderson. Fifteen hitters seems like such a luxury these days, but it'd seemingly allow room for righthanded bats like Lagares and Campbell, and perhaps a switchie in the person of Ty Kelly.
  12. It sure seemed like he got the job done to me, but I'm guessing that Stanton is one of the three or four hitters out there who get to hire and fire their team's batting coaches.
  13. I never see a Real Sports piece on baseball without thinking, "Look, I know you put a lot of time into this, a lot of professional-quality editing and writing, but you don't know fact one about this game, do you?" Which isn't to say exceptions aren't out there, but I haven't seen one. Even when they're right, they're right for the wrong reason. But they seem more interested in being oh so correct than right.
  14. Let me tell you about Hershiser. He pitched his arm off in 1988, and he was never the same again. Maybe the bottom line doesn't endorse him, but it's a shame his bold sacrifice got Tommy Lasorda in the Hall of Fame but leaves him on the outside.
  15. What a strange ballot. How does Mark McGwire get on a ballot before, say, Lou Whittaker? I just clicked for Johnson but Schuerholz probably is a god choice too. Managers tend to get sent packing if they don't come to the ballot with at least two championships.
  16. So, have managers in the past dropped three starters from their Wild Card game roster in order to carry extra bats or LOOGys? Or is there some sort of honor system that leads them to carry at least four starting pitchers? Because if anybody is ever going to be the first to flout that honor system convention, I suspect it won't be Terry.
  17. Ty Kelly. Kelly Johnson is defensible too, of course. But looking at how our batter does against lefties is only half the game. There's also the matter of how Bumgarner does against lefthanded batters. And he disintegrates them.
  18. Frayed Knot wrote: We need some righthanded hitters to materialize Wednesday, that's what we need. aka: we need Cespedes to be Cespedes and he hasn't been very Cespedespian lately. Would you do something whacky and play TJ or Plawecki at first base? Problem with TJ there is then you won't have a RH bat to play 2nd - unless Wilmer is back and then he plays 1st anyway and the problem with Plawecki is that he hasn't proven he can hit either, and has barely played in over a month (2 for 8 since recall). Yeah he was 300/348/484 in Vegas (200 AB) but that's Vegas and he's still 211/287/285 at this level (365 AB) Really wacky, but if they're going to have two lefthanded outfielders anyhow — presumably Bruce and Granderson — move Bruce to first and play Laggy in Center. The other option is Kelly at second and Rivera at first.
  19. I'm afraid that the choice expressed in this thread title might compromise Yoenis Céspedes' motivation.
  20. Met hitters' career vs. Bumgarner: .189 / .261 / .238 // .499. The good news is that this year it's .279 / .367 / .372 // .739. The bad news is that even with those numbers from this year folded in, .189 / .261 / .238 // .499 is still .189 / .261 / .238 // .499. He's 5-0 with a 1.80 ERA. He's Sandy Koufax against them. They got to him back on August 18, but the Giants got to Jacob deGrom worse. In fact, without double checking, I'm going to go out and state that it was the worst outing of deGrom's career. Gave up 13 hits, including a homer to Bumgarner. But this isn't about deGrom. He's hurt. It's about getting to Bumgarner. In that 8/18 start, he gave up the only homer by a Met of his career. It came off the bat of Justin Ruggiano. And he's hurt too. This is going to be a tall order.
  21. Nobody in the Baltimore of The Wire is actually American. Fun fact!
  22. So ends the Pretenders winning streak.
  23. AAND THE CARDS GO UP 4-2 ON THE THREE-RUN SHOT BY CARPENTER!! LET'S GO DO-DGERS!! CLAP! CLAP! CLAP-CLAP-CLAP!!
  24. Bastardo trying to unredeem himself for the Pirates.
  25. Dammit, Dodgers. Show some heart.
