  1. Amazin' Avenue's #3—Thomas Szapucki: If prospect fatigue can interfere with a fair ranking of Nimmo, I guess folks should be wary of prospect novelty with this guy, because he's sure got a lot of sudden helium after nine starts split between Kingspo' and Brooly'. I'm excited too, but everybody seems to be ga-ga over his spin rate, which is, like, a brand new thing, and its meaning is probably harder to glean than all that.
  2. JLD was an arbitrary description of the day of the post. Feel free to substitute The Feast of the Immaculate Conception, or Tim Foli's Birthday for pre-1980 seasons. The end of the World Series is, of course, a moveable feast from year to year, but still traditionally the beginning of the off-season.
  3. Nitpick #1: It's not really about what I want, but how the situation currently shakes out. Conforto is currently ahead of Nimmo and certainly Becerra on the depth chart. I imagine if Bruce/Céspedes/Conforto/Granderson/Lagares really was their outfield, that Conforto wouldn't rot, but I don't expect it will be. Travis d'Arnaud has appeared in the majors in four straight seasons, so I have no reason to believe he has options. If he can declare free agency rather than going down, that's not really the same as being optioned. Nonetheless, the scenario you describe doesn't change the current picture of who is currently ahead of whom. The only difference is in what you want Terry to say, which has no bearing on how the roster shakes out on December 9.
  4. Edgin is well out of opdgins, so he's ahead of Smoker in line, at least for now. Erik Goeddel is currently sticking pins in a voodoo doll that looks suspiciously like Mex.
  5. I don't mean to say I'm particularly unhappy with the state of the team. It's just notable that they haven't added names—people with qualities and flaws and stories and baseball cards and wives and girlfriends and stuff. I'm certain they will. It's just curious considering they had added several last year by this point, despite their GM being more or less on sick leave, or back in 2010, say, when they began the offseason with no GM at all. Some teams have even sent out spring training invites to their minor leaguers. Not the Mets.
  6. Some digging shows that the Mets neither drafted anybody nor had anybody drafted off of their rosters in the 1973 Rule V Draft. The steal of that draft looks like Larry Milbourn. Amazing that the draft occured on December 3. With all the changes and changes and changes in baseball since then, the Rule V Draft is still the first week of December during the winter meetings.
  7. Good call. The first acquisition the UMDB records following the 1973 season is Steve Simpson, sent by the Padres on December 20 for Jim McAndrew. Simpson pitched one season in the Mets system, for the AA Victoria (TX) Toros (the one season, interestingly enough) the Toros were a Mets affiliate). But again, I'm not giving up on that deal and still hoping to get some value there. The problem is that the UMDB, I think, only records deals featuring players who were big league Mets or would ultimately become big league Mets, so while the presence of McAndrew guarantees this deal is logged in, it'll take some further digging to find out if some Nixon-era Duane Below analog wasn't signed or drafted or something in the interim.
  8. November 12, 1986: New York Mets traded Ron Gardenhire to the Minnesota Twins for Donnie Iasparro. Still hoping we get something out of Donnie. OE: They did something strange in 2000-2001, claiming Desi Relaford on waivers on October 12, thus starting the building of their 2001 team while they were still battling in the 2000 National League Championship Series.
  9. I'm having a hard time remembering a year when the Mets have gone from the World Series all the way to John Lennon Day without adding any new players, via trade, via free agency, via minor league free agency, or via the rule five draft. They've had quite a few walking off via free agency, and re-signed a pair of (very big) free agents, but as far as I can tell, their last new player was Tim Tebow back in September. That's probably not true, but you know what I mean. Don't get me wrong, I like what they've got and all, but I'd like to meet some new Mets just 'cuz. Minor league outfielders. Rehabbing pitchers with shredded shoulders. Steroid abusing retreads. Bring 'em on!
  10. You're gonna miss that .426 career OPS?
  11. I think MFS62 wins this one also, though even he was almost 100 points of OPS too generous.
  12. Peter Parker, rocking his Mike Piazza Hall of Fame pennant in the trailer for his new film.
  13. Ambassador to the Court of St. James: Art Howe.
  14. Amazin' Avenue's #5—Dominic Smith: His contact ability and defensive abilities seem to draw universal faith. Even with his 14 homers this season, there's still concern over whether his power will emerge. Me and bmfc saw him on the same night and we were both more concerned with the bowling ball he carries around under his shirt. Amazin' Avenue's #4—Desmond Lindsay: Unlike Nimmo, his first two partial seasons in short-season ball have forced the issue a bit, suggesting a quicker climb is in order. Nagging hamstring injuries are the only thing tempering his reviews (and possibly tempering a more rapid advancement).
  15. If the US recalled Valentine, would he still be spotted in a doorway in a far corner of the embassy press room wearing glasses and a fake mustache?
  16. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: I am hopeful there's just enough cluelessness among the old school, and just enough new-school snarky apple-cart upendeders, to pull that off. The narrative similarity between Jeets and DiMaggio is just absolutely staggering. With Mickey Mantle playing something of the A-Rod forerunner.
  17. Looking backwards at US Ambassadors to Japan: [list:2vmm5hz0][*:2vmm5hz0]Caroline Bouvier Kennedy, 2013–present — doesn't speak Japanese.[/*:m:2vmm5hz0] [*:2vmm5hz0]John Roos, 2009–2013 — did not speak Japanese.[/*:m:2vmm5hz0] [*:2vmm5hz0]Tom Schieffer, 2009–2013 — did not speak Japanese.[/*:m:2vmm5hz0] [*:2vmm5hz0]Howard Baker, 2001–2005 — unclear.[/*:m:2vmm5hz0][/list:u:2vmm5hz0]
  18. Lunchie has it right. He swung like he meant business. He doesn't get cheated up there. Actually got his initial promotion not be a catcher, as the Mets were already carrying two of those, but be a bat off the bench
  19. Man, she was a veteran of this thread's predecessor. I think she went by her maiden name then (Mendoza?). They had kids too.
  20. Johnny Monell was the Mets third-string catcher in 2015, but got relegated to the fourth string (and no big league action) after the arrival of René Rivera. Now he's bound for The Land of the Morning Calm, in the City of Changwan, where he hopes to meet as many Koreans as there were in Flushing. Johnny was (and indeed, still is) not only a New York Native (Christopher Columbus HS in the Bronx, thank you very much), but a Mets legacy, as his father (also named Johnny) was signed by the team as an undrafted free agent back in 1985, climbing as high as AAA before leaving the organization in 1990. But he kept at it, grinding it out in the Mexican Leagues and the US independent minors until 2001, finally packing it in at 35.
  21. Exciting day for former Met farmhands. Cesar Puello got a minor league deal and a spring training invite from Texas, Matt den Dekker is apparently playing his way through the East after reporting a minor league deal with Miami, and then there's this: TransactionSigned Away By NC Dinos Of KBOPosition Group=#008000] Catcher[fimg=90]http://www.milb.com/images/476192/t400/180x270/476192.jpg[/fimg]NameJohnny MonellDoB3/27/86 Projected 2017 Mets Coaching Staff Position=#BF0000] Manager=#BF0000] Hitting Coach=#BF0000] Pitching Coach=#BF0000] First Base Coach=#BF0000] Third Base Coach[fimg=90]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/coaches/mugshots/492632.jpg[/fimg][fimg=90]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/coaches/mugshots/438989.jpg[/fimg][fimg=90]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/coaches/mugshots/123951.jpg[/fimg][fimg=90]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/coaches/mugshots/114961.jpg[/fimg][fimg=90]http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/images/coaches/mugshots/123212.jpg[/fimg]NameTerry Collins #10Kevin Long #57Dan Warthen #38Tom Goodwin #22Tim Teufel #11DoB5/27/4912/30/6612/1/527/27/687/7/58Position=#BF0000]Bench Coach=#BF0000]Bullpen Coach=#BF0000]Ass't Batting Coach=#BF0000]Strength and Cond.
