  1. Here's this story Of a man named Brucey Who was a Met just for a two-month power drought He was the fourth man Of a three-man outfield He was the odd man out Here's this story Of a bad back Birdie Who pitched better every year of his career And here was Sandy With a bullpen shortage "We want that bastard here" And then one day Sandy talked to Bean Stringfellow* And we new that the trade must be a lock There was a new man Pitching in the bullpen That’s the way we came to root for Braddy Brach! * Actually represented by Big League Management
  2. Jerry went 4-2 with a 2.79 ERA, saving two games, striking out 52 and walking only 14 in his 42.0 innings. I think MFS62 wins this one. He spoke sooth.
  3. Don't know. Neither Lobaton nor Severino seem ideal. I'm pretty sure Ramos wasn't expected to be ready until mid-season.
  4. I'd like to thank everybody for sharing their Brad Brach knowledge and turning us into a society of Brach experts. It's like Brachinalia around here.
  5. Hmmmmm, I would have thought that a logical move had they landed Sale but curious otherwise as it leaves the Nats w/o a LH starter: Scherzer, Strasburg, Roark, Ross and presumably Giolito Yeah, that buzz might have had more substance before the Sale-to-Boston deal, but only surfaced after.
  6. Buzz is coming out of National Harbor (BUZZ!) that Gio Gonzalez is bound for the Yankees.
  7. Berra, Torre, Randolph, Stengel, ... and Henderson.
  8. It's an insult to Mike Gallego, too.
  9. Or they'll give us that Giolito/Robles package for Harvey.
  10. Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, and two other prospects. That's a top-five prospect and a first round pick/top 100 prospect.
  11. Giolito and Robles could each be a cornerstone to a high-profile trade. Together? Well, that's a lot of rice.
  12. Duane Below spends a second season getting no calls from the Mets. All you SfS participants who saw that coming, congratulate your bad selves. Not predicted by anybody, but still notable: He led the PCL in homeruns allowed.
  13. Robles is the King of Quick Pitch Drama. I'd hate to give that up.
  14. I'd really like to get a statistician and psychologist together and confirm or disprove my notion that closers are responsible for a notably disproportionate share of anti-social behavior.
  15. Only because Steven Matz and his wife-to-be won't LET IT HAPPEN!
  16. Giving up on Robles implies he's never been a success. But he has. He's had a goodish rookie year, and a better sophomore year. Better, in both cases, than Brad Brach had.
  17. Missed in all the nothing going on last week is Tommy Tanous' promotion. Tanous, the Mets' director of amateur scouting the last five years, has been upgraded to vice-president, international and amateur scouting. That may mean doing the same thing from a bigger desk, but it's interesting as Alderson's expected retirement gives the Mets an opportunity to move the pieces around the board as they deliberately plan their succession.
  18. Is there any reason to doubt that Hansel Robles can do everything this guy can do? No way I'm putting together a package like that for a setup reliever.
  19. A Boy Named Seo wrote: MLBTR sez it'll take more than Bruce or Grandy to land the wonder that is Brach Brad. The Orioles have been linked to Mets outfielders Jay Bruce and Curtis Granderson (they’re said to prefer the latter), but neither of those outfielders would be enough to get the O’s to part with Brach. WTF kinda world are we living in Stupid MLBTR.
  20. Regarding Doubleday, there is also this:http://www.nytimes.com/1994/03/12/sports/baseball-baseball-has-nothing-to-say-about-doubleday-s-alleged-slur.html That's part of my thinking. Wilpon had the grace to come to Nelson's defense then (while making no claim that the report was false), and he certainly didn't have to. Heck, he could have let Doubleday doubledangle, subtly feeding the story of Nellie as a raging anti-semite, and gotten a little leverage to gain control of the team years earlier. Obviously other things have come to pass since then, but the guy is dead, and so I think Fred would see some wisdom in again showing a little grace, considering that stepping up for Nellie can no longer come around to bite him in the ass. But yeah, however representative that slur report was of Doubleday's character, I suspect Wilpon knows better than most, and maybe he doesn't want an induction he can't square with his conscience, or the Anti-Defamation League.
  21. He has a Tennessee address—I assume for the betterment of his wife's career. But Google Maps suggests it's just a vacant lot. He must be a badass. OE: looks like a house sprouted and grew since the last time Google's Streeview car came by:
  22. For what it's worth that last name is pronounced "Brock."
  23. Mets are allegedly talking about Brad Brach with the Orioles, as a main piece in a trade involving one of their spare outfielders. BraBra is a 30-year-old hard-working righthanded reliever who came up in 2011 (originally with the Padres, so Sandy knows him well) and has improved every year since. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brachbr01.shtml Comes from Freehold New Jersey, where Mister, when you're young they bring you up to do just like your daddy done. Two years of control come with him. Wife is a heavily airbrushed country singer, so there could be an exciting rivalry with the future Mrs. Matz. JRwsPJs4QEc
  24. That said, FanGraphs' Steamer tool projects him for a 3.6 fWAR this season, which is something like Lagares' upside (if not quite his ceiling). On the other hand, those projections gravitate toward the mean. Paul Goldschmidt has a 4.3 projection. Nolan Arrenado has a 4.2. But obviously some of these guys will have soaring years. So forget I said anything.
  25. Pittsburgh has re-signed Wade LeBlanc, who they strangely traded for late (September 13) but then proceeded to use only out of the bullpen, despite his history as a starter. He pitched well for them but by that point, it was too late for them to dig out of their hole, as they were five games behind the Mets in the Wild Card race with two teams to leapfrog to get there. And of course, he was ineligible for any playoff action that they theoretically might have magically attained. Wade LeBlanc fascinates me, because every time I hear his name, I get the idea that somebody's talking about an oily politician whose whole organization is just a thing veneer of respectability spread over a horrifying and barely hidden agenda of potentially violent white nationalism.
