Mike Baxter. Good night and good news.

I thought the other half of the quote was more telling. Manfred Mann wrote: I think our umpires do a phenomenal job in getting balls and strikes right. Going back to when Sandy Alderson was [in the MLB office] — over the last 15 years we have dramatically improved the accuracy and consistency of the strike zone.” Now, how would you know that unless you have your own equipment for measuring the accuracy of human performance against the objective written standard — equipment that is far more sophisticated and adjustable than the stuff the broadcasters use?

Scott Atchison.

Wow, I guess there's a lot more gap in between Hoffman's career and Wagner's than I can see.

Taylor Teacozy.

Haven't seen a lot of Tim Stauffer lately.

The Kansas City Royals, ever concerned that their future aces might be dipping into the clubhouse spread rather than staying engaged in spring training games, have signed Bobby Parnell to a minor league deal.

I don't know the first thing about these three guys except they seem years away from becoming Mets and each of them has a better name than the next. (Who even knew Ron Darling and Kevin Baez had a kid?) There were three other guys rumored signed around the same time, but I can't find confirmation on them. I'm penciling all these guys in for the DSL. Most notable fact is that Dominguez becomes (I think) the first Mets property born in a year beginning with 2. Todd Stottlemyer reporting that his dad is in the hospital "fighting for his life." He's not specific about the circumstances but it's clearly related to cancer, possibly the multiple melanoma he was diagnosed with back in 2000. All good thoughts to big Mel and his family. If and when the Mets trade Granderbruce, their fifth outfielder slot is going to be wide open. Ruggiano seemed to be as good a candidate for the job as any, but injuries sure done him in. Signed to a minor league deal by the Giants, according to Baseball America writer Matt Eddy, via Twitter.

Lou Whitaker is my pick for the greatest one-and-done player. I'm not sure if you'd conclude there was a glut on the ballot that year, but two guys went in, both in their first year of eligibility, and five other eventual Hall-of-Famers appeared on the ballot.

Blas Minor was great back in Return of the Jedi.

I tend to think Jones was such an impressive defender in his early 20s that folks didn't appreciate that he faded early and kept winning Gold Gloves well after he deserved them. Of course, I don't know how that factors into JAWS. I don't know how much I suspect about his power being genuine, but it sure disappeared after mandatory testing was installed. Funny how the top three centerfielders on the outside all became Yankees after their legs were shot.

Cool Stat That's Kinda Hard to Contextualize but is not Unmeaningful: Carlos Beltran has never been caught stealing more than eight times in a season. On his crazy run of greatness, when he came over to Houston for the last 90 games of 2004, he stole 28 bases without getting caught a single time.

Even after bringing next to nothing the last two years, he's one of the all-time great post-season players. He's part of a very small class in that regard.

Beltran, Kent, Hodges, Wagner, Johnson. Keep rootin'! Upcoming Ballot Additions 2018: Liván Hernandez, Jason Isringhausen 2019: Darren Oliver 2020: Bobby Abreu 2021: Michael Cuddyer Totally gonna keep my fingers crossed for the next couple of years over that Darren Oliver candidacy.

Hamilton is better IF you believe that his injury-depressed performance on defense is permanent rather than passing. I don't know, but I'm guessing that the Mets have more insight into this than most. Hamilton also is a year and a half younger. But yeah, they generally seem redundant.

The defensive trouble area is moved from easily-exposed CF to 1B. Or... make another trade, only with more leverage. That's a lot of dudes coming off injuries Colorado is being asked to take on.

Here's a summation. The suggestion is that the Mets initiated talks but the Reds are actively listening.

I don't know. But I read about that shit mostly on Cincinnati sites.
