  1. Tyler Moore stays in the NL East, but not the Mets. He goes to the Marlins on a minor league contract.
  2. Charges dropped. According to Newsday's Jim Baumbach... [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] [tweet] [/tweet] Obviously, MLB may see things another way, but this certainly doesn't strengthen baseball's case against him.
  3. Chad Pergram of Fox News sez America has become Mackey Sasser.
  4. Especially when you're in Ohio, and C can stand for Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Canton, Cuyahoga Falls, ... Circleville over in Pickwick County ... . Alternatives ... you can have an Indian depicted with nobility and anthropological accuracy. You can change your name to a local tribe—the Kickapoo or the Chippewa. Or just go back to the early days when a team was named after their defining personality and call them the Cleveland Fellers, the Dashing Dobies, or the Human Rain Delays. What was the question?
  5. Anyhow, some Tigers guy is proposing Justin Wilson and Mike Pelfrey for Curtis Granderson, and ... I'm gonna take a pass.
  6. Closers shmosers.
  7. I'm younger than John Valentin but older than Don Florence. WtF is Don Florence?
  8. The Utica Observer-Dispatch visits with Jim McAndrew of Lost Nation, Iowa. He re-introduces us to the largely forgotten Mets figure that is Wes Stock, minor league pitching coordinator during the pitching-rich late 1960s, seen below opposite Rube Walker as they observe The Express.
  9. Released in spring training, just about everybody here predicted no Metly action. What nobody predicted is that by May, he caught on with the Braves — not as a relief pitcher, mind you, but in the burgeoning field of "instant replay coordinator." Nice work if you can get it.
  10. A shocking upset! Amazin' Avenue's #1—Amed Rosario: The only flag here seems to be an unusual swing trajectory that starts high. One guy says it looks like a potential hole but nobody's exploited it yet. Another guy says it could lead to more power. The bottom line in the comments seems to be that he's really close to done cooking: "By the end of 2017"; "I expect the future to begin in 2017"; "Don't be surprised, be ready."
  11. Gonzalez German is gonna be an Orix Buffalo.
  12. Amazingly bad spin in the title of this story at LawNewz.com: New MLB Anti-Hazing Policy Bans Dressing Like Women LawNewz-1 hour ago NO, NO, NO! Meanwhile, the Polish Prince would like to speak: "I think it's ridiculous," Giants broadcaster Mike Krukow said Tuesday morning on KNBR 680. "A lot of these kids come up out of the minor leagues having been there four or five years, they get to the big leagues and they cannot wait to put a dress on. They've heard about this, they want to be a part of it, it's a tradition."
  13. I don't think the Braves guy is a particularly objected to, but there's certainly been pushback. But he's mostly been phased out, no?
  14. It's pretty much how folks go from good to great in baseball. When opposite field hitters learn to turn on the inside pitch, the pitchers can no longer pitch away from their strength. Mattingly did it. Kevin Youklis sort of did it. Same can be said for pull hitters who find a way to protect away mid-careers. It doesn't happen often, but it happens, and when it does, the pitcher has nothing left but his stuff. Reason suggests there should be some dropoff for Murphy, but hits aren't just dropping in more often for him. He's hitting stuff he used to not.
  15. And, not a moment too soon, MLB outlaws hazing. That's one for you in the bank with me, Rob Manfred.
  16. The New Orleans Pelicans, who later became the New Orleans Zephyrs, are now the New Orleans Baby Cakes. Clearly folks are trying to find profit in the novelty of problematic names. But getting too cute with vaguely homoerotic designations may be getting old pretty soon. 17. And Ruben Tejada returns to New York. Or, at least, to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, signing a minor league dealio with the Yankees.
  18. Amazin' Avenue's #2—Robert Gsellman: These guys seem to be universally gsiddy over this guy, including one who calls him a top-20-overall prospect. What I hadn't realized is the angle that, rather than him being just more and better from 2015 to 2016, Gsellman completely changed his approach from one year to the next, which is particularly exciting when you consider that he was effective in both seasons. When you successfully change on the fly like that, it gives you a broad foundation to stand on, to mix metaphors a bit.
  19. Well, you can certainly make your own thread if this doesn't seem to be where you would want to report this. Please don't believe in the dictatorship of threads.
  20. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: You know that the guy we sign/acquire/promote to get lefties out doesn't actually have to BE a lefty, right? (Terry might need a briefing on this, as well.) The team got virtually all the way through the pennant-winning year of 2015 without an effective LOOGy (apart from five innings from Blevins and 11.2 from Leathersich), so I'm certain they know how to play that game. It seems to me they've had sone success finding potential LOOGy-ness in guys who are just floating around, failing at bigger roles, waiting to blossom in the smallest role of them all. Over-committing to such characters as Brett Cecil seems folly.
  21. Marc Tramuta moves up from assistant scouting director to director of amateur scouting. Tamuta was a shortstop for St. Bonaventure (go, Bonnies!) who played one season in the Dodger organization, where he distinguished himself by rocking some Satinesque brow. Actually, those brows might be more aptly described as Groucho-esque, especially considering he's from Fredonia, NY. He came to work for the Mets under Tanous in 2012, having previously worked for the Blue Jays, where he scouted some of the talent the Mets would haul in when the R.A. Dickey trade went down. In 2014, the Mid-Atlantic Scouts Association named him the "crosschecker of the year," which apparently isn't as infamous a title as it is in the NHL. He also previously worked for the Baltimore Orioles where he scouted John Maine. So he's been good at eyeing Mets talent, even when he's not with the Mets.
  22. Well, Espinosa comes about $9 million cheaper, but I can't fault the Mets for holding out. If all they get is two prospects, I suppose they're going to hold out for the right two. Sandy's certainly gone to camp without the roster set before, so we'll see where they go from here.
  23. As of now, it's Wilmer Difo, who is a difo Wilmer from our infield backup.
  24. I guess that's what you get for having a winter caravan. Sometimes cracking down on malcontents just produces more malcontentia.
