Unsourced buzz suggests that the Mets have shown interest in offering Jay Bruce back to Cincinnati in exchange for centerfielder Billy Hamilton, with the deal to make or break depending on other parts thrown in by other sides. Hamilton hasn't been hopeless with the bat, but he's certainly not been consistently effective by any stretch. The Reds seemingly have continued to express optimism that he can still progress. What's in it for the Mets, apart from the obvious salary difference, would be whether they see something in Hamilton they can work with. If he came over, he might be a rare bird—a ninth-place hitter in the National League, at least initially.

That's weird. He's wearing a home uniform in a stadium not his own, he's up against the fence behind homeplate throwing a pitch directly at the face of a patron from point blank range, and he's three times the height of the micro-Gregorius in front of him. When "maintaining integrity" means "reinforcing the right to apply the rules subjectively or even arbitrarily," well, perhaps we should stop using language altogether and switch to ones and zeros like m.e.t.b.o.t

The way I see it is that, if they trade Jay Bruce for Relief McChumpstein, and they have an outfield of Céspedes-Conforto/Lagares-Granderson. They pick up a De Aza on the free agent market to be the fifth guy. Conforto's certainly not ideal up the middle, but they made it work for a stretch last year, and he comes with a glove caddy. Sooner rather than later, due to injury, ineffectiveness, the expiration of Granderson's contract, or some other reality, Conforto moves over to take a corner spot fulltime, and Nimmo becomes the lefthanded centerfielder, and they're more or less set for several years. Or at least in a position to be. So they have an outfield and they have a succession plan, and even a useful alternative or two (Laggy, Reyes ... ) if it goes wrong. It'd all look better if Céspedes could be coaxed into right, but that's a problem no matter who they add or don't add. So, I ain't spitting on Blackmon and certainly not spitting on McCutchen, but I don't see the sort of need that suggests a GM shouldn't fight for his deal on his terms.

The team's outfield situation is more or less fine. It could fit together better and it's worth exploring if that could be made to happen, but any clusterfuck that has Yoenis Céspedes in it is one I feel good about watching. Did that come out right?

Dane Danning sounds like a former Miss Rheingold.

Yeah, his presumed trade price is what I refer to, but that's obviously largely speculative. He put up .400-or-better OBPs four years in a row, which suggests he could be something like the #3 hitter I crave (even if he isn't a lefty), but then last year he fell to .336. My feelings, I find, are conflicted.

He'll bring something back. I'm a little wary of of McCutchen—coming off a bad year, several years since he was a defensive plus, and still bearing a superstar's price tag. On the other paw, I've always loved his halfback physique, and he strikes me as the type of guy who can still be an asset when he's not at 100%. I think Alderson values those type of guys.

LOOGy or not, Niese looked strong out of the bullpen in the 2015 postseason.

I'm more than happy to see these commitments made by somebody else.

Andrew Barbosa pitched well at four different levels last season. All told, he probably wasn't somebody the Mets wanted to lose. He came to them as a minor league free agent last offseason, and leaves the same way, probably not seeing doors particularly flying open for him on the Mets big league roster. He definitely will give Lucas Duda a run for his money in the Met Most Like a Giant Baby category. Sixty strikeouts and only eight walks in 54 innings with Lancaster. Based on his MLB sample, those eight walks would have been about nine innings worth, so good on him. I'm guessing he opens with Bingo, but we'll see.

I'm certainly not advocating denying players due process, but MLB has its own form of due process outlined in the general agreement. And beyond violations of the law, it's their business to find out if players violate MLB policy.

You're the law-talking guy, but if the prosecution is quoted as making statements that work against their own case, and the case has been expunged from the official record, I'd think of that as a best-case scenario, from the perspective of whoever is going to represent him on behalf of the union. That said, they may still end up accepting a suspension of some sort—perhaps 10 days or 10 games—because appearances are important and if nothing else, he appears to have gotten psycho-drunk enough to endanger his family, and that's not nothing.
