  1. Report riling up the Yankee organization is that Clint Frazier asked if the Yankees would un-retire a number, and that the number he wanted was 7. Brian Cashman rushed to firm and unequivocal denials, declaring the story to be "totally untrue." The problem with crying FAKE NEWS! though, is that the source is notorious Yankee shill Suzyn Waldman.
  2. Both teams swap catchers but otherwise back Colón and deGrom with the same squadrons in the same order. 3. Strange goings on in that Cubs-Cards series, as Adam Wainwright goes Full 50-Cent in this pitch to Jake Arrieta. [tweet:onpm7rgo] [/tweet:onpm7rgo] I'm impressed that Arrieta is such a good hitter that he inspires awkward grips in his opposing pitcher. Plus Stephen Piscotty got himself hit three times in one trip around the basepaths—four if you count the second one hitting him a second time on the rebound. [tweet:onpm7rgo] [/tweet:onpm7rgo]
  4. Centerfield wrote: I am a bit surprised that Colon and Dickey are starters 2 and 3. I wonder if I would have tried Garcia, who pitched pretty well last season. Bart pitched clearly better, though, particularly if you're generous enough to throw out that start on José Fernandez Tribute Day.
  5. Edgy MD wrote: This team needs an on-base machine. Starting this season the same way we ended the last one—waiting for a couple of solo homers to bail out Syndergaard as he puts up zeros—isn't healthy. Blaming the the bullpen for not continuing the perfection is folly. Start crowding the bases, you guys. Your National League walks leader: Jay Bruce with 3.
  6. Just let this be a lesson to you kids. If you want free tickets and a free ride, put on all your Mets stuff and go nuts on television.
  7. Frank Fleming won’t have to deal with the headache that is NJ Transit for his next Mets game. The fan who went viral on Monday after flipping out over NJ Transit delays on his way to Opening Day will be getting two tickets and a car ride to Friday’s game against the Marlins, courtesy of Excedrin. “Excedrin saw Frank Fleming's opening day headache video and felt his pain," said Scott Yacovino, Senior Brand Manager Excedrin. "We're giving Frank tickets to Friday night's game, a private car and some Excedrin just in case his opening day headache remains. While we can't guarantee a victory, we can guarantee he won't have another headache trying to get there." Fleming, a 41-year-old Mets fan from North Belleville, NJ, was on an NJ Transit train into Penn Station when a derailment forced his train back to Secaucus. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-fan-angry-nj-transit-car-tix-friday-game-article-1.3019421
  8. I had no idea. But man, he'll still be covering the minors, which takes effort and shoe leather and stuff.
  9. That didn't last long. Adam Rubin has taken a side gig, blogging for SNY/Metsblog.
  10. Expect the first of two unusually hardy cheers for the visiting pitcher in this series as the Mets defend their first-place position. Pinch-running specialist Travis d'Arnaud is expected to crack the lineup for the first time, possibly Wilmer Flores and Michael Conforto also.
  11. The Mets, acutely aware of the dearth of outfield talent through their system, are refusing unearned social promotions for the likes of Kyle Johnson and Champ Stuart, and are letting Las Vegas start the season with only three outfielders, granting them a third catcher (Jeff Glenn) and a 13th pitcher (Logan Taylor) instead. I don't know how long that'll last but Brandon Nimmo on the DL might well have something to do with it. DL'd players aren't shown below, but count Seth Lugo and Tom Gorzelanny among disabled 51's, or at least disabled guys who otherwise may have been bound for Vegas. Cool numerical fact: Donavan Hand is wearing 51 for the 51s and so is the only guy who wears the full team name on the shirt. 12. "So, who are we?!" "Puerto Ricans!" "And what does that mean?!" "Children of the Island of Enchantment! And their descendants!" "And how do we show the world what that signifies?!" "By all of us dying our hair something more Nordic-looking!!"
  13. This is why they built their impressive foundation of redundancy. Lugo emerged, in part, because Wheeler went away for a long time. Now Wheeler is back and it's Lugo's time to be on the shelf, hopefully not for two years.
  14. I posted Frank in the IGT, but just zapped it. Wouldn't be shocked if he gets his own show. That is is some downtown boutique-level rage.
  15. We won the game on bullpen wildness, man. That three run dubble was just the natural corollary of all those free passes. As terrible as the Braves bullpen was that inning, it was almost a sin that our rallying ended with a Met swinging 3-0. Learn a lesson and give 'em enough rope to hang 'emselves, Wilmer.
  16. I'm worried about Fman's poo-crying ass.
  17. dinosaur jesus wrote: I'm a little confused. In this thread, opening day is considered to be the home opener. But in the opening day quiz thread, it's the first game of the season. That's what I'd actually consider opening day to be. For the record, the Mets are now 36-20 by that definition. Gary actually mentioned that during the broadcast, and said it was the best record in baseball. I certainly meant to report the record on the first day of the season.
  18. Sheesh, all those years of my mom driving her milk truck, and all it ever gets me is screwed.
  19. Not sure I have the reverse order right, but ... [indent:12rd4viv]Noah Syndergaard Matt Harvey Bartolo Colon Dillon Gee Jonathon Niese Mike Pelfrey Johan Santana[/indent:12rd4viv]
  20. Today's win places the all-time Mets Opening Day record at a lofty 35-21. Their .625 winning percentage is easily the best among all active National League franchises and is third all-time. A win next season combined with a Blue Jays loss would allow them to catch and pass Toronto and grab the second-best all-time Opening Day winning percentage. Wins the next THREE YEARS would allow them catch and surpass the Yankees, achieving the best-ever OD winning percentage, provided the Yankees do their part and lose all three years. Terry Collins has now won more Opening Days than any manager in Mets history. Mets Managers' Opening Day Records Casey Stengel: 0-4 Wes Westrum: 0-2 Salty Parker: 0-0 Gil Hodges: 2-2 Yogi Berra: 4-0 Roy McMillan: 0-0 Joe Frazier: 2-0 Joe Torre: 3-1 George Bamberger: 2-0 Frank Howard: 0-0 Davey Johnson: 4-3 Bud Harrelson: 1-0 Mike Cubbage: 0-0 Jeff Torborg: 1-1 Dallas Green: 1-2 Bobby Valentine: 4-2 Art Howe: 1-1 Willie Randolph: 3-1 Jerry Manuel: 1-1 Terry Collins: 5-2
  21. I think COBA is out while Nawmin Seabrook awaits his fate. The archbishop of Brooklyn has almost as good an accent as Nawmin, though.
  22. Yeah, part of his schedule. In between doing the crossword and brunch at Muse in the Harbor.

  25. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: I can't be sure, but I think O'Flaherty may be wearing eyeliner. Like Piazza never wore a little eye makeup. I think the season previews for the Braves suggested that they could score runs, but the bullpen would be a concern. The bullpen is a concern.
