The final transactions are filed and ... we have a roster! Firstly, 10-day DL trips are kinda bullspit and are going to be rife with abuse. But maybe not. Secondly, re-adding Kelly apparently doesn't force anybody to be removed from the roster, I guess because Familia doesn't count against the roster limit while he's under suspension. A weird double standard protects teams from feeling the ramifications of their players' misdeeds. Thirdly, it looks like a handful of guys who were dressing with the minor-league free agents were re-signed by the Mets, without any official announcement any time this winter. Most were lower-level guys. The one exception is Mickey Jannis, who has been in Bingo long enough to serve on the city council. I suspect the Mets are bringing him back to throw batting practice to them on the days before they have to face R.A. Dickey. 39: Ty Walker.

I count that as three. Maybe even 2 1/2. I put Lugo in a box with Nimmo. Guys that you might be expecting to contribute as the year went on, but probably weren't in anybody's plans for opening day anyhow. And I don't think Wright was ever going to open in Flushing. The flipside is that I didn't expect Wheeler at the top of the year either.

It seems all but a fait accompli that Juan Lagares is heading to the DL, so Roster Central is forced to reverse course and congratulate Ty Kelly on making the opening day roster. All that's left is to finalize whether Montero has beat out Lugo (which I think he has, but the Mets want to keep Lugo in the family a few more days), and to figure out how to squeeze Kelly back onto the 40-man. I hope it is not a 60-day DL assignment for David Wright, but my fears butt up against my hopes. I read in at least one place that Mickey Jannis and his knuckler are back in the organization, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ronald Sanchez is back also. Expected to not make the roster in Oakland, and opt out of his contract rather than accept a AAA assignment: Alejandro De Aza.

I've long thought MLB should give an award for jeffmanship. Jeff McKnight, for instance, was for years a model of jeffmanlike behavior.

Big shot corporate vice president of sales (Will Ferrell) gets himself in trouble with his drinking and gets fired, then comes home to find that his wife has locked him out and put all his stuff out on the front lawn. He plops himself in the easy chair parked in the middle of the lawn and goes on the PBR binge to end all PBR binges, pretending he's having a yard sale, but really just sitting there and drinking for like a week. I mean, some small stuff happens and he meets a few people, but that's pretty much the elevator pitch. I'm always tempted by the novelty of bruddas. In my dream, there's room for Chase d'Arnaud and Yoelqui Céspedes too. Not a big Mike Glavine guy, however.

The question is whether Blanky can still cover center meaningfully better than Grandy, I guess. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: Scooter is also a Cincy native, it's like us giving the John Lannan's a chance. Lannan is back with the Nats on a minor league deal. I thought they had a bad breakup. I don't remember why, but I don't like that particular guy. I think he just pitched above his level when facing the Mets.

Just went up on Amazon. Directed by Opie Cunningham. New interview footage by Caleb Deschanel. Music remastering by Giles Martin. Coolest thing was hearing somebody talking about going to one of the Hollywood Bowl shows as footage of the crowd rolls, describing how she did everything she could to get tickets, and ended up a half mile from the stage. And then they cut to a shot of the speaker, and it's none other than (famous Baby Boomer actress), telling how, no matter how far away she was, she dressed and did her hair carefully to get noticed. And you're thinking, oh yeah, you were there, maybe, but your memory is probably embellishing. And then, somehow, they get 10 seconds of a crowd shot, and there's this 13-ish-year-old, a little taller than then others, and it's (that very same famous Baby Boomer fucking actress). You can tell by her dimples and chin and stuff. I don't know if they found her in a wide shot and zoomed and digitally enhanced it or what. But it was pretty cool. Stuff like that is cool. But what made it best is how they were able to reconstruct and master the music, and you find out that, contrary to testimony, including and especially their own, they were actually singing and playing pretty damn good for the most part.

Gun to your head*, which of those three outfielders would you take on until Laggy gets back. *If you don't choose, you get Emil Brown and have to carry him all year.

Players DFA'd (or released outright, in some cases) as teams pare down rosters and add non-roster players in time for opening day. RP Jared Hughes, Pirates (released outright) RP Cesar Vargas, Marlins (DFA) OF Tyler Goeddel, Phils (DFA) OF Chris Coghlan, Phils (released) OF Gregor Blanco, Backs of Diamond (released) Reds, ever motivated to keep Dilson Herrera buried, have claimed Scooter Gennett off waivers.

Four irrepressible lads from Liverpool take the world by storm with their music. Story told in impressively digitally remastered sound and digitally restored film, effectively synched together even as they often come from different sources. Some colorizing. Tyler is an organizational pitcher who has spent parts of the last four years at Binghamton, and will likely open the season with the newly re-named Rumble Ponies again this year. He threw five starts for Vegas last year, and is in a good position to get the first call should Vegas need a starter, but at 27, he's probably no better than even money to ever see a big league clubhouse, and certainly less likely to stick for long. His minor league numbers bring shame to nobody, but probably excite nobody neither: 38-29, 4.25 ERA, 462 strikeouts and 152 walks in 554 1/3 innings. That's a guy you want in your organization, if not starting for you on opening day. Expansion would probably help his career out a lot. Why remark on this guy? Because his hitting numbers are positively Boggsian: .362 / .384 / .493 //.876. I mean, Boggs sure took more walks, but that's eggs-in-your-beer picky. He's only had 78 plate appearances because most leagues use the DH fulltime up until AA, but I'd let that guy swing. Use him in the outfield when he's not pitching. DH and pinch-hit him. Outfielders in the system are thin. Better to be competing for playing time with John Mora and Patrick Biondi than with P.J. Conlon and Chris Flexen.

So, now I'm reading that Laggy won't be answering the bell after all and Kelly's getting his spot. Not sure if that's the latest info or what.

Fuck it. World Series in three.

Surprised to see Graveman over Sonny Gray in Oakland. Checking the record, it seems Gray strained a lat three weeks ago. I wonder if anybody has studied whether the time lost to be cautious with all your pitchers is greater than the time gained in the alleged reduced incidence of catastrophic injury to the few.

MFS62 wrote: I thought this was about all the Mets who joined the National Guard to avoid the draft. I remember some of the '69 team being absent for two weeks to attend military training. I didn't avoid it. Later They generally weren't in the National Guard, but the Army and Marine reserves.

Clarification: That last question. Are we looking for the guy who makes the last out, or the last guy to make his first appearance?

The Mets have announced that a rainy forcast has moved them to cancel their scheduled game against the US Military Academy. Originally scheduled to be their first visit to West Point since 1984, they moved the game early this month to Citi Field based on a snowy forecast, and now have moved it to oblivion.

I was thinking that Jio Mier might be Vegas bound earlier today, but the signing of Josh Rodriguez all but eliminates that possibility. Rodriguez, who went to camp with Oakland this year, will be returning for his third tenure with the Mets organization, and he'll likely make an ideal mentor for the tribe of young infielders out there. I'm betting he's joining the organization as a coach when he hangs 'em up. Griset is the second Met this year who was a minor league free agent that I only learned re-signed when he got floated up to big league camp. For all I know, half those guys below have been re-signed. Also, the grim reaper came calling at the end of camp for three dreamers. Becker is a Texas righthander—perhaps a descendent of the great Adelsverein Germany-to-Texas migration—who had a hard-to-ignore probelm with throwing strikes. Beeler is a Tennessee righty who couldn't stay healthy the last two seasons. Brooklyn reliever Ty Williams also had the injury bug.
