Cuzzi is squeezing deGrom. How do the Mets keep getting Phil Cuzzi, anyhow?

Maldonado's beard looks like it was applied by stage makeup. Coming out of and 0-for-36 slump. Mon dieu.

Someday, maybe soon, we're going to realize that we're taking more care of pitchers, but not better care of pitcher

I think you're right. I got the idea that that the story meant that the team had just gotten swept, but maybe they got shut out in the last game. My Spanish comes and goes.

The Steelers of the North baseball club informed Mr. Wally Backman—who until today held the position of the Steelers' manager—of his dismmisal. Through a press release, the club thanked Wally for his effort and commitment to the organization and wished him the best of success in his professional career. In the coming days, it will be announced who Backman's successor will be, and in the meantime, Jorge Loredo will take the reins of the team. Backman started this season with the Steelers of the North leaving a bad taste in the mouth among the Monclova fans, who have been abandoning the team over their poor play in key games. In the last series, played at home against the Tigers of Quintana Roo, the Steeler team was swept, falling to fifth place in the Northern Division, and begin a series today against the Lions of Yucatan, leaders in the Southern Division. A cool thing is that the term they use for getting swept appears to be "getting a bleaching."

Heard from Warren. He'd been under the weather, but is improving and hopes to be back with us soon.

It apparently adds up to: [list:2vsgvemn]11. Sorry, we've been bad. Trying to do better.[/list:u:2vsgvemn] Sorry to play the tease.

[tweet:3n7fyu48]https://twitter.com/Molinas96/status/865653373021835265[/tweet:3n7fyu48] Roughly translates to: "The Acereros (The Steelers) have fired manager Wally Backman after being swept by Los Tigres (The Tigers) at home." He made it all of 42 games with them.

Seeing vague reference to a Mets press conference scheduled for this afternoon, with only speculative guesses at the subject. I assume if somebody had been axed, reporters would've spotted him packing his bags. Top Ten Guesses in No Particular Order Mike Trout is jumping locker rooms and suiting up for the Mets. Mets have cut ties with Barwis Methods. Rosario and Smith have been called up. Sandy's retiring. TRAID Harvey. Mets have gotten on board with a new public service initiative, and check it out, here's our Mannequin Challenge vid. Somebody failed a drug test. Possibly Harvey. Possibly Céspedes. Possibly Tebow. Mets are happy to sponsor the First Annual Cheeto-Guzzler Showdown. Mets salute Terry Collins, most managey manager the history of Mets managing. Wright's retirement.

One step at a time, man.

On the other hand, it's nice to see Steve J. Rogers working for the Star-Ledger.

Hey, everyone knew what was going to happen in the Roger Clemens game too, but the warnings came after the Estes miss.

A thread to chronicle the Mets' step-by-step ascent from the murky bottom of the ERA standings. And the bottom of the ERA+ standings too. Phillie, you're going down. Yogi Berra ranked by me as a guy who didn't come out of New Jersey at all, but out of Missouri. I'll give Derek Jeter a pass for spending the first four years of his life in New Jersey, but I imagine that didn't represent a lot of baseball development.

How did Teheran get two throws at a guy and not get kick'd out? Suddenly it's 1975?

The Loney deal is a fait accompli. He had been released about 10 days prior by Detroit, with whom he'd been laboring in AAA. I wonder if he had a similar deal as last year, where he'd sign a minor league contract with the stipulation that he'd get a release if anybody came sniffing.

A lot of shuffling going on, mostly beneath the surface, where you can't see, but there's been mad transactin' down in A-Ball the last couple of days. The good news is guys starting rehab assignments or coming off the DL outright. The bad news is the best way to get that done is to start with a lot of guys on the DL. Frayed Knot wrote: Jeter at least always made sure he asked for time with his right hand up in the direction of the ump even though he rarely bothered to turn towards the ump when doing so. Well, the arm was up. The hand would always dangle loosely like he was ordering another round of fruity cocktails from a wait staff too far beneath him to warrant eye contact. ^ Not in full dangle. ^

I saw Gar the Batting Stance Guy paying "tribute" to Derek Jeter the other day, and I surprised myself by feeling angry, remembering how Jeter's entire routine was a form of gamesmanship, claiming an upper hand over the situation, telling the pitcher and ump in all his body language that the play cannot begin until he gives his permission.

Frayed Knot wrote: Benjamin Grimm wrote: I just looked it up. The team's name is officially "Anteaters". I think that would have been better on the uniform than "Eaters". That trend -- giving your team's nickname a nickname and slapping it on your uniform (your uni if you will) -- is one that's been developing for years now. I suspect it's from copying oh-too-hip ESPN sportscasters who use names like that constantly as if doing so makes them seem intimately familiar with the team. The NHL's Colorado Avalanche getting dubbed 'The Lanche' was an early example. Fortunately the Expos never saw fit to stitch 'Spos across their chest and even the ever-experimenting Astros never reverted to 'Stros. It also at times extends to proper names as fans of 'Nova' and 'Cuse' (Villanova, Syracuse) could tell you. Lately it's become ultra-trendy to call the city of Cleveland simply 'The Land' as if the back half of the city name is enough to identify it. Not sure how Portland and Oakland feel about that, but it's their fault they're not cool enough to have LeBron James. The compound-nickname thing may be a latter-day trend in some circles but it has long history in the NBA where teams with polysyllabic names created desperate challenges for uniform designers and headline editors alike, so teams like the Knickerbockers, Seventy-Sixers, Trailblazers, and Supersonics, were the Knicks, Sixers, Blazers, and Sonics pretty much from the start.
