  1. Braves prospect Sean Newcomb has been scratched from his start with Gwinnett and will be making his MLB debut Saturday in one of the doubleheader games against the Mets. Newc is 20-14 with a 3.23 ERA over 71 minor league starts, but has only pitched a half season in AAA. John Sickles has him as their fifth-ranked prospect, giving him a B+, which strikes me as high for a #5.
  2. Well, I called that Reyes return, but I'm surprised to see Flores sitting instead of Cabrera or Granderson. But I'm surprised every time I see Granderson.
  3. Is Gary back tonight or do we get the Scott Braun show again? Frustrating that with two real pros in the radio booth they look past the JV and draw from the freshman team when Gary is out. Borrow Howie or Wayne from WOR and let Braun sit in on the radio broadcast. The absence of Gary was, as it is the few times he's away, jarring, and a familiar replacement might have helped. Possibly more jarring was Darling not sounding like Darling at all, like he was on a blind date and didn't want to tip his hand until he had an idea what kind of stranger he was working with. Even by the end, he never did seem comfortable. Add to that the alien way last night's game played out and the whole thing was just kind of a disturbing passage. Like you see your cousin at a cookout, and you've known him your whole life, but suddenly he only speaks Zulu, and you're supposed to just engage with him like nothing's off.
  4. I swear, what I loved about watching TBA last night is that, not only was the house packed, but 85% of the folks seemed to be in their seats watching baseball. Yes, I should have put a caveat in there: " ... in their seats seemingly watching baseball." The long tangent on the two-foot frank was frustrating.

  6. Starting the year as the Mets #5 pitcher, and the one most likely to get babied, Zack Wheeler is suddenly the Mets most reliable starter, in relative terms. Rebuilt Persian Japanese hurler Yu Darvish slings for the Rangers. He last faced the Mets July 4, 2014 at Citi Field, giving up four runs in five innings and being unable to do anything with Lucas Duda. Scorecard below. Look for José Reyes to escape from the bench, for a day anyhow, possibly playing short and giving a day off to Cabrera, possibly playing third and pushing Flores to DH. 7. Approach, approach, approach.
  8. The genesis of the "HoJo is the answer" movement was a social media video advocating for such put up by a possibly drunk but certainly addled Lenny Dykstra. It's a miserable thing to watch. If it's beyond your capacity to feel pity for Dykstra at this point, you'll feel something in your stomach, possibly pity for humankind.
  9. deGrom also managed to lose three leads. I have to think squeezing (relatively) so few runs out of so many opportunities can't not reflect on the manager.
  10. No, they'll totally do better. Trend better.
  11. I confuse Bob Horner and Ed Delahanty a lot also. When Mike Cameron did it, three of the homers were off the same guy, but he wasn't the starter.
  12. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Kinda curious... who went with two stars? Why? Me. I found nothing original or particularly engaging in it. In the way of contemporary blockbusters, it was full of plot elements and money shots shamelessly cribbed from other films. Contemporary ones. Also, the stilted accents of the denizens of Paradise Island made for unintentional hilarity. As with a lot of latter-day superhero stories, the extent, nature, and limits of her powers were unclear and all over the map.
  13. Don't like those high curves getting call'd for strikes.
  14. Do it for CHEAP TRICK, Mets!
  15. There's certainly value in erasing the double play possibility, but man, if you're going to steal, you've GOT to make it. The risk-reward ratio is really high. But it helped set up this walk by Conforto.

  17. Thinking hard about lost opportunities right now. Let's not lose this one.
  18. Work the count, man. The count is your friend.
  19. OK, first two on in the eighth. Let's see what we can do with this 'un.
  20. What was that? A five-pitch inning?
  21. Great, we're first-pitch swinging. Come on.
  22. Poor Irish, reduced to arguing with himself. I'll say this for Texas: Their seats are filled.
  23. Answer to Verizon Trivia Question: Ted Willams' Head.
  24. There will certainly be changes before September, one way or another.
