I'll guess Tootsie was tops the week of Curtis Granderson's birth Something's telling me you must be wrong, but thanks for having the stones to go first. Vikings: Terry Collins The Vikings was not out at the time of Terry's birth. We're still, however looking into whether actual Vikings were active. What was America thrilling to when you were born? When your poor mother was in the pain of her young life, were the neighbors delighting in horror or farce? Schwarzenegger or Stallone? Or Kirk F. Douglas! My brother-in-law had a weakness for dumb action, and when my lovely niece was born, he was at the theater watching Time Cop. No, he has never lived that down. This quiz lists the films that were tops in the country the week of a Met's birth. Your job is to name that Met. Three points for being correct. Minus one for being wrong-wrong-wrong. No consecutive guessing. Included are all uniformed Mets and their coaching staff. Rostered Mets who are injured or otherwise inactive are included as well. Active minor leaguers are not, even if they are on the 40. Neither are trainers, weight trainers, or bullpen catchers. Or announcers. Not them either. No suits. Thinking of Aaron Judge doinking the ball out of the park, last night, I'm wondering how much of the new power generation can be attributed to the global warming trend. Hitting always got better during the hot summer months, but now summer comes in late April.

While the present is currently dry, the higher minor leagues aren't a place with a depth of either stars, once one looks past the Super Two of Rosario and Smith. I'm sure some quality players will emerge, but hard-case records in Vegas, St. Lucie, and Brooklyn are hard to ignore. Luckily, along with some productivity in Bingo and Columbia, the lowest minor leagues are impressing! The Mets of Gulf Coast League (along with both of their cousin teams in the DSL are emerging as teams to beat. Unlike the juggernauts in the Caribbean, the stars of this thread, the GCL Mets, are but 5-7, but just you wait and see. Yesterday, for instance, the Baby Mets smashed the Infant Astros. I mean they absolutely punched them in the face, to the tune of a 10-3 victory, pounding out 15 hits, five for extra bases. Shortstop and recent second-round pick Mark Vientos socked his first career homer. Homeruns are rare in the GCL, even in 2017, so you savor those. You just savor them. Aneury Olivo, who is punching below his weight as the Mets bounce him between the FSL and the GCL, picked up the win with 5 2/3 strong innings. Emerging as an unstoppable force for the G-Mets is centerfielder Guillermo Grenadillo. "The Little Bomb" is strafing the league with an eye-popping stat line of .426 / .460 / .574 // 1.034. Safe in four of his five stolen-base attempts, too. Anything can happen in a short amount of time. I hear you saying that. I can literally hear you. But Gilly is 50 plate appearances into his season. It's a pattern at this point. And it's a pattern being repeated in kind by thirdbaseman Hansel Moreno. Hansel is joining Guillermo in the the 400 Club with a line of .408 / .455 / .510 // .965 while he's 54 appearances into his season. Look out, Robles, there's another Hansel on the way. Starting pitcher Daison Acosta has done everything but be lucky, his 0-2 record belied by his Oroscovian 1.47 ERA over 18 1/3 innings, striking out 16 and walking only three. His effectiveness is nearly matched by his rotation mate Jaison Vilera who has allowed only two runs in his first 11 innings (1.64 ERA), striking out 10 and walking one. Two innings into his season is recent acquisition catcher Matthew Foley. Foley is notable in that he's been sent to labor in the GCL despite already being on his third organization. Foley was drafted in 2015 by the Marlins and has since been released by them as well as Atlanta, before joining the Mets in his attempt to Bruce Chen his way through the division. The G-Mets were idle tonight, living in solidarity with their big league brethren. Many players have explicitly committed to spending their off day in search of a face. 1. 2009 Met and longtime big leaguer Livan Hernandez has filed for bankruptcy as reported by The Miami Herald. 2. Cameron Planck, 11th Round pick from 2016 has announced he will be having season-ending shoulder surgery, having yet to throw his first official pitch as a profession. This combines with highly ranked prospect Thomas Szapucki's exiting a game after only 15 pitches with forearm discomfort. 3. Mets-fan-turned-bitter-despot Chris Christie took the time to test-run his radio career and slander the people of Montclair. He also reported that he was disgracing the Mets by wearing their branded clothing when he was farting on the beach. [tweet]https://twitter.com/SportsFunhouse/status/884493741737873408[/tweet]

Keith was also effusive in his praise of Whitey, calling him the best manager he ever played for. While that's a small sample size, it's high praise for a guy who sent you to baseball Siberia because he was put off by you doing crossword puzzles. (I tend to agree that Whitey was great, even though I resent that he was the first guy to build his pitching staff backwards, using the closer as the foundation, and working from there, thereby leading to so much of the craziness of our times.) As for un-blacklisting Bouton, that's great. The Mets need to un-blacklist Old Timer's Day.
-
Keith has said that he doesn't even deserve consideration for the Hall of Fame until Steve Garvey gets in. It's bad enough that history's opinion is swayed by an assessment of Garvey inflated by an All Star selection rate that is disproportionately a reflection of his presence in a major media market, his frequent appearance in high-rated post-seasons, and his totally fake boy scout act. But it struck me as tragic that a smart guy like Keith let these things affect his assessment of himself. Robin Yount, by the way, only made three All Star teams, half as many as Bobby Bonilla. He even won one of his two MVPs in a season in which he failed to make the All Star team. I tend to think that, when filling an All Star roster, we should measure a player's productivity not merely over the first half of the season, but also include the second half of the previous season. Some excellent players tended to perform at their most productive as the season progressed, and history has recorded them as infrequent All Stars, ergo, not as good as frequent All Stars.
-
One of them must have come after the game.

It was originally going to be just the first part. (There are three parts to this film, representing the shooting of three different scenes, but without spoiling, it's more complex than that.) Director Tom DiCillo's friends convinced him to expand it to a feature length, and they raised money for him. Two of them got decent roles in the film as a thank-you. The film was supposedly inspired by DiCillo's struggle to make his previous picture, Johnny Suede, Brad Pitt's first big starring feature, and one of the characters is supposedly based on Pitt. (DiCillo denies this but it sure is an appealing thought.) What's great is what a time capsule of the nineties this is. Nineties actors like Catherine Keener and Dermot Mulroney, nineties styles, rundown New York. Even the style of the film within the film and the mystical jazz soundtrack come right out of the era, and Buscemi's haircut seems to have been transplanted right off of Matthew Sweet's head. Good footnote: this film was Peter Dinklage's debut. His role is small but he owns the film when he's onscreen, and latter-day reissues of the film feature Dinklage on the poster/DVD box/digital download thumbnail.

Rosario batted third for the World Team in the Futures Game, taking a mini-collar of 0-2, with two strikeouts. Tomás Nido, on the other hand, collected two hits and two RBI in his two plate appearances so win. #dontbesurprised

I found it astounding in that it attempts with all its heart to be a nu Field of Dreams, but just isn't. We're all supposed to join him and support his dream, but he lies to his wife and children, puts their welfare in serious jeopardy, physically assaults his friends, rips off his father-in-law (embracing a cheap deus ex machina in the process), tells Bruce Willis to get stuffed despite a REALLY generous offer. Oh, and he risks the safety of the nation, because HE HAS A DREAM. Dreams are great, but sometime you need to realize you've achieved something just as good along the way, and you either adjust your aims accordingly, or accept that you don't have a dream at all, but rather a destructive obsession. Ray Kinsella himself would tell this guy to get real. Add a half a star if you like gorgeous western sunsets. This thing was shot like a Christian romance. Not that I would know.
-
A low-budget film crew (headed by a director played by Steve Buscemi), struggle through technical problems and personality conflicts to get a few simple scenes shot in an abandoned-Manhattan-warehouse-turned-"studio."
-
A NASA washout who never gave up, Texas rancher Charlie Farmer still dreams of going to space. And so, using nothing but the scraps of NASA's discard pile and his own technical wizardry, he builds a rocket in his barn and enlists his family in his dream of home-based DIY space travel, while running afoul of government suits.
-
Lester got simply mur-diddly-urdered at home. They allegedly swapped out the ball during the All-Star break. Maybe they can swap it back during this one.
-
And an accidentally a propos thread title.
-
No, there's actually negotiating. A release can make some players a little more money if more than one team is in on the action.
-
Wilmer healthy enough to play, but displacing Cabrera at second instead of taking over at third. Against a righty? Sure, against a righty. Well, that's understandable. I mean, T.J. is still hitting, right? But he sits too, in favor of Reynolds. It must be a Sunday lineup!
