  2. Don't want to celebrate an injury, but getting into the Rockies' pen in the first tonight really gives the Mets an advantage.
  3. Where in the world is Wilmer Flores? Grandy riding pine, too! The whole second half so far! 5. Some years ago, Deadspin did a profile on each umpire, listing his proclivities and background and such. Among the profile attributes, they included a category for "where he's hated." This was before replay review, so any umpire with a few years on his record was going to have made enemies with one city or another over an unappealable call. Most guys had one or two cities. The vets had three. But when they got around to Angel Hernandez, I was shocked to find he had four different fanbases on his enemies list, and the Mets weren't one of them. He's burned bridges in four towns worse than in New York? ¡Increible! http://deadspin.com/5906057/better-know-an-umpire-angel-hernandez
  6. Yeah, this is very good. It gets Peter right, it gets Queens right, it gets teenagers right. Spider-Man, considering his long career as Marvel's top property, has a pretty weak rogues gallery. After The Green Goblin, you've got Doc Oc, Venom and ... a lot of jokers. But they've cycled through most them on the big screen already, and as they slide down, The Vulture is pretty much the highest profile remaining nemesis (goes all the way back to Amazing Spider Man #2), and he's just goofy. But they've given him a credible interpretation and backstory here, taking what's viable and reinventing the rest, and what they get is about the best they could have gotten. They've shed some of the key parts of Peter's life — Aunt May is now a middle-aged aunt, rather rather than an elderly great aunt; he lives in a walkup, rather than a little house — but they've restored some good stuff, like the internal conflicts of his high school set, and his Mets fandom is everywhere, if you look. I mostly like that they've put aside the notion that every superhero movie has to have a conflict that is a global existential threat. Spider-Man fights neighborhood crime, and that's great. And his nemesis in this movie is worse than that — he's an arms dealer — but we don't have to have the world on the line to care.
  7. Day in and day out, this team is absolutely capable of this.
  8. Michael Clair at MLB.com writes about the history of bullpen cartage, and seemingly confirms that the Mets were the first to go with the baseball-with-a-cap-on design. Justly dismissed was the 1970s Bombers Sponsor-Driven Pinstriped Bullpen Toyota. Supposedly, the Toyota's Datsun forerunner died when rats chewed through the cables!
  9. Not that this lineup can't bring the Rockies tumbling down, but Wilmer seems to have fallen into a hole in the clubhouse.
  10. Francisco Rodriguez, continually looking to break his personal best when it comes to wearing out welcomes, has been released by the Nationals before appearing in a single game.
  11. Putting aside re-signing deals (*cough* Wright *cough*), I like the B.J. Upton deal for free agent futility, if only because the Braves had to throw in Craig Kimbrel to get rid of him.
  12. I see your knavery.
  13. TT has hit in 11 straight and 14 of 16 since his promotion to St. Lucie. He extended that today the hard way, hitting in both halves a doubleheader, with both games limited to seven regulation innings. He went to the seventh of the second game hitless. With the hitting streak on the line if he failed, he instead hit a walkoff homer to complete the St. Lucie sweep.
  14. Rosenthal, by the way, is out of work just at the time of year when he becomes is the hardest working baseball reporter since pre-stroke Peter Gammons. Just a terrible move, FOX Sports.
  15. That's a guess, right? For which film?
  16. That Vacation poster, by the way, was by famed fantasy fiction cover designer Boris Vallejo. At least one of my faulty guesses was a Rene Rivera. Restoring a lost point to you, along with a share of the lead, with my apologies and compliments. I was wrong about Ricky Bones being Rosemary's baby, but maybe he said Goodbye Columbus? And three more points and the OUTRIGHT LEAD!! 17. The fun begins today as the Chicago White Sox trade ace José Quintana ... crosstown to the freaking Cubs! [tweet:25azh5uj] [/tweet:25azh5uj] For what it's worth, Eloy Jiménez is no Happy Meal toy. His prospect rankings are pretty comparable to Amed Rosario.
  18. I'm pretty sure that our set of Twins are former Twin Rene Rivera and... René Rivera is another Met I stupidly left out. He was born July 31, 1983, while America took off on a West Coast trip. [fimg=230]https://assets.mubi.com/images/notebook/post_images/15843/images-w1400.jpg?1394204823[/fimg] Jake deGrom is Irwin Fletcher in FLETCH II. Change it to the Underhills. 19. A handful of their then-teammates are now Mets and I want them to spill the beans.
  20. They sent him on a mission that was meant to fail but they made one mistake: They forgot were dealing with deGROMBO I'd pay $$ to see that film, but it is sadly not Jacob's birthright. 21. Mid-summer, 2015, on July 15, all in one day, the Mets released Aderlin Rodriguez, Dustin Lawley, and Eudy Pina. None were top-ten prospects, but all were productive minor leaguers. Lawley was coming off a poor half-season, but he had won the St. Lucie Sterling Award the previous year and was the FSL MVP. All three were exactly the type of guy you round out a minor league roster with, and would likely have tasted a month or two of big league coffee filling in during some emergency. It's certainly possible they were blocking better prospects, and didn't seem content to be organizational fodder, but it really smelled like something dramatically disciplinary. As far as I could tell, nothing ever came out, but the teammates were reportedly stunned. Does anybody remember anything about this? How did Rubin not get to the bottom of it? Or did he? Lawley played his last games in the Can-Am League last year (go, indy ball!). Pina cashed his last check last season with AA Birmingham in the White Sox system. Rodriguez is still slugging them out in the Eastern League, now with Baltimore.
  22. Just thinking of former Twins. I'm pretty sure that our set of Twins are former Twin Neil Ramirez and... No, Neil is not one of our Twins twins! ... future Twin Hansel Robles! Neither is Hansel, although I suspect he has a twin sister named Gretel somewhere. Black Rain? It'll only get baby Jacob deGrom's hair wet, no? And it isn't Jacob deGrom's hair that the Black Rain falls on! No! Scoring seawolf17: 5 Hahn Solo: 4 sharpie: 3 LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr: -1 ceetar: -4 John Cougar Lunchbucket: -11
  23. I understand you sensing something of a violent vigilantism about Rivera. I sense it too! But he wasn't born under Commando, and he wasn't born under Rambo. Scoring seawolf17: 6 Hahn Solo: 4 sharpie: 3 ceetar: -4 John Cougar Lunchbucket: -10
