Five Yankee hats in 12 thumbnails up there now. How am I supposed to name anybody?

Checking my journalism books. Can't find that rule.

Get out and see the Cyclones tonight at 6:00 for their season finale. It's been a miserable year for a Brooklyn team that has been mostly good throughout its existence, but a kid named Noah Syndergaard is expected to take the hill for the Clones, and that's something.

You get gen-u-ine prospect Marcos Molina taking the ball. Marcos has been hit-and-miss this year but he's gotten better as the season has progressed, which makes sense after missing virtually all of last season following surgery.

A two-run first-inning double by Pete Alonso put the Rumble Ponies ahead to stay, never looking back as they rode seven innings of one-run pitching by starter Corey Oswalt, taking a one game to none lead over the Trenton Thunder in the first round of the Eastern League playoffs, winning 4-1. Oswalt, Tim Peterson, and Tyler Bashlor limited the Thunder to six hits and two walks, striking out 12, including shortstop Thairo Estrada three times. Eat it, Ponch! Speaking of eating it, Ricky Knapp, who spent most of the year getting battered in Las Vegas, plays the ringer as he goes to the mound for Bingo tonight. Go, Ponies!

Relegate the Marlins!

Gene "Stick" Michael, banjo-hitting infielder on Yankee teams from the late sixties and early seventies, and frequently the guy standing in the right place whenever George Steinbrenner decided to fire somebody else, has joined George in the hereafter, succumbing to a heart attack at 79. I don't think there were ever any fake tickets, so much as fake profits. Pay off the old investors with the new investors' money, and hope and pray that you can keep suckering people in until you finally find a casino that you aren't banned from and hit it big, or die, whichever comes first. I don't envy somebody who falls into that hole.

I recognized Oliver, but couldn't place it, and guessed it might have been young Doc Ellis. Oliver spent ten years with the Pirates, but I associate him with the vagabond second half of his career.

With the Baseball-Reference thumbnails, today I got Ken Caminiti, Jon Matlack, and Kenny Lofton. I ken my Kens! As far as "thinks Ya Didn't Know," part of what I do is promote fair trade. How exciting to learn on Monday that David Robinson, Jackie Robinson's surviving son, runs a fair trade coffee cooperative in Tanzania.

I failed to get this in by gametime, but great job by Gsellie throwing BBs before Mets Roster Central even acknowledged his presence. Also, we finally added Ray Ramirez and Brian Chicklo below in time for any firing. Pablo Sandoval has now reached a franchise-record oh-for-his-last 37, and the Giants have been continuing to send him out there. But he's on the bench tonight as the Giants lead 7-1.

There's a memories-of-Bowie book by the drummer from The Spiders from Mars, and three (?!) separate recent memoirs about The Fall, who must have been much bigger than I remember. Jimmy Webb has a memoir called The Cake and the Rain. I enjoyed a book about songwriting he wrote 20 years ago. But I bet you'll go for this. Maybe John'll let us know when and why he started looking like Mandy Patinkin.

That inning was a little bit of a corker. The first guy reached on a wet-ball error. Then the double over Nimmo's head had him going back at a speed that suggested he wasn't confident in his traction. A homer is a homer, but he finished strong in pissy weather and I'm OK with that. Maybe a taste of the minors got Gsellie a little more focused.

No, but this looks like a bargain at $.01.

Nimmo demonstrating a facility for the sacrifice fly.

Kim cracks me up. He looks like a mob collector more than an athlete. He looks like the boxer the champ uses as a punching bag. Doesn't have a chance but he has good odds to stay on his feet for at least five rounds.

The funny part of it is that the Yankees payroll has receded the last few years, too. Projected for seventh in the league, last I heard.

And he got the job when the Mets suckered the Royals into giving up Joe Foy. That deal is going to pay off one of these years, mark my words.

Among upper management, Milone's name is frequently followed by, "Well, THAT'S a roster spot that's going to open up for us in the offseason."

And Nassau is three towns (Hempstead, North Hempstead, Oyster Bay), each containing dozens of villages, plus two cities (Long Beach, Glen Cove). Town of Hempstead is this sweet little bastion of an un-necessary level of bureacracy that can go corrupt to the core for decades at a time while life generally functions workably because of its utter redundancy between the village governments below and the county above.
