  1. “You can say the team went to the World Series two years ago and the playoffs last year with Barwis, so maybe this is just an anomaly,” another source said. Well, you could say the same about Ruben Tejada, but I don't see any overcooked loyalty directed at him.

  3. Six infielders in my world. Any more than 12 men on the pitching staff is self-defeating.
  4. And that's assuming this is real and the 2018 Mets don't reshuffle all the cards.
  5. Something I learned today is that Jen-Ho Tseng makes his debüt for the Cubs, continuing their defense of last season's celebrated summer.
  6. The Mets celebrate my anniversary by sending Seth Lügo to the mound in candy apple gray, challenging him to show some hart and grant the team a win after their 17-5 cubbing of a drubbing yesterday made no sense at all. [youtube:18ey6h21]eoKeH7JYE48[/youtube:18ey6h21]
  7. Straw has been a spring training instructor. Maybe Gooden too. George Foster (Foster!) has been invited to some official events including gladhanding fans on line in the winter for tickets-now-on-sale day. Gooden has also been guest commentator on broadcasts and presumably that involved some renumeration.
  8. But remember, whatever he costs, you have to add $2 million more. It's a complicator!
  9. You're the GM of the Mets, but your autonomy is limited. You have a lot of young infielders, and your owners tell you to re-sign one of the Mets' two veterans, Asdrubal Cabrera or José Reyes, to fill in the experience gap, for whatever that's worth. Cabrera gives you Venezuelan gravity; and Reyes gives you Dominican fire. Cabrera is locked in with an $8.5 million option; but Reyes presumably costs you whatever the market will bear, plus $2 million more to buy out Cabrera's option. Cabrera is a steadier, more consistent presence; Reyes provides a more dynamic one. Cabrera (generally) gives you good hands and headier play; Reyes gives you good wheels and a strong arm. Reyes may arguably be the better candidate to hit the DL; but Cabrera is creaky even when actively playing. Cabrera plays second, third, and short; Reyes would seemingly have the skills to do all that and play the outfield, though evidence of this ability has not yet been brought to light. Asdrubal ceremonially removes the helmets of homerun hitters; while José leads the dugout dancing. Reyes has an ongoing and friendly relationship with Amed Rosario; Cabrera has never been arrested for domestic assault. Both like to bleach their hair and get a little pissy if they think they aren't being respected. 10. I think just about any of the old Mets can play the "Organization hates the 86ers" tune if you bait them into it just so. It's just such a perfect populist message, it's hard to resist giving it to Met-hating Mets fans if you want to win their valentines. Darryl doesn't even play it the way he's supposed to. Remembering that the Wilpons have actually been mostly good to him, he lays the blame at the feet of the Alderson administration, forgetting that he's been welcome back with laurels as recently as last year. The alleged insult to Ray Knight was only offering him a two-year deal, which of course was the decision of Darryl's late fellow inductee, Frank Cashen. This turned out to be more than generous, as the Mets had four eligible replacements behind Ray, and easily more than Knight would get on the open market. To still talk about this like it's a current issue suggests the guy has long since checked out of Mets affairs, which is fine, because he has his own life with it's own meaning. But folks who still want to grind old axes are going to look to old ballplayers to help validate them. WtF are Bernie and Sid? Why do they get a show while my voice goes unheard?
  11. When he was young, he was even a great baserunner. His second half his career is a lot like Jim Rice's in that he's still putting up the traditional production numbers, but that only obscures the reality that the relative lack of walks and the accumulation of double plays makes him something less than an asset.
  12. And here we are: Juanito is the tying run at the plate.
  13. It's another night that the Mets are within striking distance in a game that, in a just world, they would be trailing by 10 or more.
  14. Darling's New York accent still sounds more Bostonian.
  15. Rubbles wild, and kinda chubby.
  16. Harvey's insignia is a darker gray than usual. And he egg-zits after 3 1/3. Poor Hansel has to come on with the bags juiced.
  17. Edgy MD wrote: Throw seven and get a bunt down, Harvey! Part two crossed off with the squeeze!
  18. And Harvey opens with a bases-loaded-no-out situation. Good a time as any for an around-the-horn triple play.
  19. 11. Plawecki-1
  20. But if Reyes hits like Rizzo, then that's OK.
  21. These blue tops make the Mets look like Cubs in the park where they shouldn't.
  22. I hear you, but I think that's a ticket that Terry crumpled up the last time he saw Reyes in the outfield.
  23. Bet you didn't see that Reynolds-at-first maneuver coming, Joe Maddon!
  24. Cleveland's greatest 21: Bob Lemon.
  25. Aoki is, as of today, not only (at least) the the team's third-best outfielder, but he's the leading candidate for the fifth outfield slot on opening day 2018. Let Aoki live!
