  1. Beltran's got perhaps the most bullshit narrative of any Met, extending back to his very first appearance in uniform, when a Spanish-speaking media person got the first question at his introductory press conference. Some guy at Amazin' Avenue made an incredibly original "Don't let the door hit you on your way out!" post when he signed with Cardinals. I made the obvious observation that he had already left the door months earlier when he was traded to the Giants, and man, did folks line up against me. Beltran "never went full extension for a catch," and he "disrespected wounded veterans" and hates America. I posted 6-12 photos of him in full extension, his Tal's Hill catch, his breaking his face apart in San Diego. All that proved was that I, too, hated America. Where do we pull the bus over and let the I'm-not-a-racist racist Mets fans off?
  2. Interest waned (it was never strong) in the FUaM Sweepstakes. I'm kind of OK with that. While it's fun to look at old guys, I'm tickled that the real-world Mets defied the they'll-never-hire-an-inexperienced-manager notions, and went completely off book, making the fake-world Mets a low fantasy far weaker than reality. I'm declaring the sweepstakes defunct. Thanks for participation. Special thanks to all our candidates, living, dead, and undead.

  4. I like that he knows what it's like to win 22 in a row.
  5. Westrum would go on to manage the Giants in the mid-seventies. And Torborg had a few seasons with the Marlins, 2002-2003. Yogi would have an infamous second tenure with the Yankees in the mid-eighties.
  6. Mickey becomes only the third former pitcher to become a Mets manager, and the first who started as much as he relieved. He breaks a string of five straight former infielders to manager the team, going back 21 seasons! Starting Pitchers Mickey Callaway (2018–????) Relief Pitchers George Bamberger (1982–1983) Dallas Green (1993–1996) Catchers Wes Westrum (1965–1967) Yogi Berra (1972–1975) Joe Torre (1977–1981) Jeff Torborg (1992–1993) Infielders Salty Parker (1967) Gil Hodges (1968–1971) Roy McMillan (1975) Davey Johnson (1984–1990) Bud Harrelson (1990–1991) Mike Cubbage (1991) Bobby Valentine (1996–2002) Art Howe (2003–2004) Willie Randolph (2005–2008) Jerry Manuel (2008–2010) Terry Collins (2011–2017) Outfielders Casey Stengel (1962–1965) Joe Frazier (1976–1977) Frank Howard (1983)
  7. Callaway has never appeared against the Mets, and in fact, seems have never appeared against any National League team, with the loan exception of his MLB debut, in which he faced Montreal on an interleague road trip. That also appears to have been his only time at the plate as a major- or minor-leaguer, and he ended up going 2-3 with an RBI against Dustin Hermanson. So, while I fear he may have a tough learning curve coming over to the nine-man league, a .667 batting average is a nice career mark. https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/MON/MON199906120.shtml
  8. Best wishes to him. I imagine if the Mets went hard after him, he'd have considered it. It's a tough assignment, trying to perform your second act in the same division where you had your long-term first job.
  9. I wonder what one team in the central time zone and another in the west is going to do to the schedule for us Eastern Seaboarders.
  10. 1-2-3, kids. Let's do it.
  11. Well, they may sense there's a deal or two out there that they like better.
  12. I'm following through GameDay. Is Verlander available out of the pen tonight?
  13. That's bunt talk. Sweet, beautiful bunt talk.
  14. Keith and I agree that the most important coach is the pitching coach, but that doesn't typically mean he's first in the line up succession. I would say the dugout heirarchy more-or-less goes something like: MANAGER --> BENCH COACH --> THIRD BASE COACH --> PITCHING COACH --> BATTING COACH --> FIRST BASE COACH --> BULLPEN COACH. There's been a lot of suggestions that teams, after first appointing a new manager and then his new brain trust, look around and realize they haven't chosen any coaches of color, and use the first base coach or bullpen coach as token minority positions.
  15. That's OK, Yankees. Why don't you head out to Cooter's to unwind before calling it a night?
  16. Think Verlander is available for tomorrow?
  17. Still no outs, Yanks.
  18. Goliath lands a punch, and David counters. [fimg=700:2yokznp1]https://img.washingtonpost.com/rf/image_1484w/2010-2019/WashingtonPost/2017/10/19/Sports/Images/862140356.jpg?uuid=EmYHtrTlEee-lPq7Dx6f-w[/fimg:2yokznp1]
  19. OK, two. Headley. It's your turn.
  20. YEAH! That's one. Who's this Frazier guy?
  21. Come on, Hicks. Go down!
  22. Yanquis threatening in big in the top of the seventh. Still later
  23. The music guy will play "Minnie the Moocher" when he walks to the mound.
  24. Acta has some things going for him: connections in the organization, strong bilingual skills, and he managed the Dominican Republic National Team and presumably has connections with players from the DR. But given 5 1/2 seasons of big league experience, with two organizations, he has never managed a team to a winning record. And three (or 2 1/2) of those seasons were truly terrible. His overall winning percentage over 890 games is .418. You don't want to make too much of that, as managers can only work with what they've got (Torre did worse with the Mets and look at him now), but it's not like Acta's teams trended upward during his tenures.
