So, not only are all minor league team's using the same logo designers, but they're being renamed by the same closet of yukks as well. And the same one or two firms seem to get most of the architecture contracts, too. Let's get some variety, baby.
  2. It'd be nice to choose a name that is majestic and Hellenic, as ancient Syracuse was celebrated in its time as perhaps the greatest and loveliest city of ancient Greece. It is also the birthplace of (Metly coincidence) St. Lucy, who is patroness of the city.
  3. Willie Mays gives batting tips to JFK, Jr.
  4. I think so. I think their creditors think so.
  5. Scherzer should still be out there.
  6. Point of clarification. Is this the Mets buying the team, or the Wilpons/Sterling?
  7. Hey, maybe Adam Rubin was right after all!
  8. We need to break open this field. Red Schoendienst: 3 Lloyd McClendon: 2 Ron Roenicke: 2 Tony DeFrancesco: 2 Jim Tracy: 2 Cookie Rojas: 2 Ted Turner: 2 Joe Torre: 1 Joel Skinner: 1 Tom Kelly: 1
  9. Just fantastoricially fantastic news.
  10. Matt Williams has done the Mets as much service as you can ask by damaging the Nationals. I feel the same way about Fredi Gonzalez, who has negatively impacted two division rivals, but other folks are fingering him in for an interview, so what do I know?
  11. I know the HVAC guy. Apparently, every clubhouse has one. So when I went shopping around for sponsors, they seemed a natural match, and they jumped at the chance.
  12. John Cougar Lunchbucket wrote: It seems like the highlights are 20 minutes followed by 2:40 of bluescreen. Still impressive I watched 10 minutes and looked at the time stamp, and figured !!!. Had no idea that it actually died at 20.
  13. Essian looks a little crazy. Like the older brother of Luther from The Warriors.
  14. What kind of mania makes a three-hour mastercut of Ralph Kiner going nuts? Click in wherever you like and enjoy some Ralph. [youtube:s2iwgqa4]5Grsvyt5xps[/youtube:s2iwgqa4]
  15. Less concerned about Sandy's internal usage and more concerned about that three-way tie for fourth among Manuel, Peña, and Pedrique.
  16. This group needs more votes. Got a three-way tie for fourth among Lawless, Martinez, and Gardner, with two votes each.
  17. It looks like Washington, Trammel, and Hargrove will advance from Group A, but we have a four-way tie among Mike Quade, Larry Parrish, and Dave Bristol for the last spot. If any who have a vote remaining want to break this tie, here's your chance. It can also be broken by somebody switching their vote. Go for it! Democracy is fun!
  18. You're reading a book at a Starbucks. What Happened? It's just depressing you. There's a safe hanging over this woman's head and she can't see it. It's hanging over all of our heads. Then somebody calls out "Terry!" They have your drink. Half caffeinated. I guess your still Terry. And you've reviewed 154 former managers. Then, last night, you did what you promised you'd never do again. Drunk texting Billy Beane. "Billlwy, i need a madnager," you digitally slur into Nokia. "You want me to giftwrap Art Howe for the Mets again?" he sarcastically responds. "Done!" "Dont' be a dicck. The athletics sucuk too!" you respond, a little louder than expected. "I haev a list! 154 names. All fwtith MLB edxperience." "Let me run that through our people. I think we have 172 since Solly Hemus died. "you have more namecs! send me your nams e!" you write. Even as you hit send, you know you're coming across as an incoherent incompetent. "Get to sleep," Billy writes. "I'll have those names for you in the morning. "And Sandy, people love you." So here you are, sucking coffee down at Startbucks, listening to Lucinda Williams warble, and crossing out all the names on Billy's list you already have. And gradually, a final list start's to emerge. Eighteen names. This is the last batch. You take a swallow and stare. Which four guys do you call in for an interview. 19. He sort of got the hold for the 1991 Toronto Blue Jays. Mid-season, manager Cito Gaston was sidelined with a hernatied disc. Tenace came on mid-season and managed 33 games, keeping the ship sailing to the tune of a 19-14 record, before turning the team back over to Cito, who led them homeward toward their first-place finish.
  20. You're Sandy Alderson. There's no denying it. It's the name on your door and on your desk and you pull out your wallet and check your ID. License, credit cards, USAA insurance card, it all checks out. And if all checks out, you may as well get to work. You're making the rounds of some of your re-hires. You're of course re-signing your broadcast booth, at an honorable rate. You call Keith to square things and he's chatty. "Keith," you say, "I've been looking at old managers." "HARRY THE HAT!" he shouts. My first manager in pro-ball. He hated ballplayers with cars. Can you imagine that?! He resented that a few of the guys had cars!" "Keith," you say, "I love your feel for the history of the game. I need you to help me find 17 living managers. You know, like Sandberg and Bob Boone and guys like that." "Boone's alive?" he asks, "God you wouldn't have guessed it if you've seen him during the last few years. Lumbago, I think." "Don't change, Keith. You stand by, I'll Fed Ex you a bunch of names of guys we're already considering, and you send me back guys you know." "FedEx? I don't know. DSL is a lot faster and more reliable out here." "Yeah whatever. Get it to me by tomorrow or never." That's the way you've gotta deal with Keith. When he's excited about something, he's a dog with a new toy, and he's all over it. When he's not, he grows bored. You've gotta force quick turnaround out of the guy. And wouldn't you know it. The next day, the DSL guy comes to the office door. You NEVER get DSL deliveries. But Keith's right. Fast and reliable. You pour over the names before you. At the bottom it says, "Livin' the Amazin' Life, San'. — Thanks, Keith. Good for him. Buty you've got to find four of these guys to call in for an interview before the day is out. 21. You call your dog, and he comes to you. Then you realize, "Wait a minute, this is Sandy Alderson's dog." And you come around to what you keep coming around to: you're still Sandy Alderson. And you still have a manager to find. Folks don't realize the enormity of this job. The pressure of being a GM on the rocks. Then you realize, wait a minute, some people do. Jim F. Duquette knows! You call the sometime Mets broadcaster. "Jim probably deserves a bigger role," you think to yourself, "but his availability is erratic. Maybe he belongs in your front office and not your broadcast booth at all. In fact, maybe this is a test." That little reverie has distracted you long enough to miss the fact that Jim has already said hello twice. He's about to hang up, when you yell, "JIM!" "Spock?" he kids. You don't get his joke. He explains that it's something about the T'Pau episode. Whatever. Jim's a weirdo. But he's a smart baseball man. "Jim, what do you know about hiring managers?" "I know a little about that, Sandy," he retorts. "Well, I've got to find an experienced guy. The Wilpons insist that I hire a guy with MLB experience. Like you had to hire Howe." "Uh, that one's on Phillips' ledger, Sandy." "Were you consulted?" "A little, but ... " "Well, I'm consulting you now." You're starting to suprise yourself at how snappish you are. "I'm sorry," you offer. "Do you think you can whip together a list of 17 experienced MLB managers?" "Sandy," he replies, "I will get you a list of the best available, yet experienced, 17 managers in all of baseball." Good old Jim, you think. Such a company man, then you remember. "Oh, and Jim? This list? It can't include Manny Acta, Felipe Alou, Joe Altobelli, Joey Amalfitano, Brad Ausmus, Buddy Bell, Terry Bevington, Tim Bogar, Bob Boone, Dave Bristol, Daren Brown, Dave Clark, Terry Collins, Cecil Cooper, Don Cooper, Pat Corrales, Chuck Cottier, Bobby Cox, Roger Craig, Mike Cubbage, Lee Elia, Jim Essian, John Felske, Mike Ferraro, Jim Frey, Matt Galante, Dave Garcia, Ron Gardenhire, Billy Gardner, Phil Garner, Cito Gaston, Bob Geren, Kirk Gibson, Fredi Gonzalez, Johnny Goryl, Alex Grammas, Chip Hale, Mike Hargrove, Toby Harrah, Bud Harrelson, John Hart, Tommy Helms, Trey Hillman, Glenn Hoffman, Frank Howard, Billy Hunter, Brandon Hyde, Davey Johnson, Tim Johnson, Kevin Kennedy, Don Kessinger, Bruce Kimm, Ray Knight, Marcel Lachemann, Rene Lachemann, Tony La Russa, Gene Lamont, Hal Lanier, Tom Lasorda, Tom Lawless, Jim Lefebvre, Jim Leyland, Nick Leyva, Grady Little, Davey Lopes, Frank Lucchesi, Ken Macha, Pete Mackanin, Charlie Manuel, Jim Marshall, Buck Martinez, Lee Mazzilli, Dave Miley, John McLaren, Jack McKeon, Hal McRae, Stump Merrill, Ray Miller, John Mizerock, Joe Morgan, Tony Muser, Jerry Narron, Larry Parrish, Tony Perez, Sam Perlozzo, Bill Plummer, Bo Porter, Luis Pujols, Mike Quade, Willie Randolph, Greg Riddoch, Jim Riggleman, Frank Robinson, Edwin Rodriguez, Larry Rothschild, Tom Runnells, Bill Russell, Norm Sherry, Jim Snyder, Moose Stubing, Dale Sveum, Jeff Torborg, Carlos Tosca, Dick Tracewski, Alan Trammell, Tom Trebelhorn, Gary Varsho, Robin Ventura, Bill Virdon, John Vukovich, Don Wakamatsu, John Wathan, Eric Wedge, Walt Weiss, Jimy Williams, Matt Williams, Maury Wills, Bobby Winkles, or Ron Washington." Jim stops for a moment. You hear him thinking. "Who the fuck is Johnny Goryl?" You laugh, because that's funny. Jim's a weirdo. "I'm counting on you, Jim. The team is counting on you." Jim's a team player. Almost to a fault. That sort of thing matters to him. And Jim meets you in your office in an hour, hand delivering his list. You even brought your dog in with you. Such a good dog. "I figured you might want to talk about some of these guys," Jim says. "I did some cursory research." You stare down at the names before you. Doc Edwards? You reach for the bottle bottom drawer. Time to go to work. Which four of these guys gets called in for an interview?
