  1. The Wifey Watch Office back in Stockholm files tell us Ray and Nancy filed for divorce in 2009, after 27 years of marriage. They had separated previously. Ray is part of a small group of ballplayers who were married to somebody more famous than themselves — Ray, Joe DiMaggio, David Justice, possibly Matt Treanor, Casey Daigle, maybe Chuck Finley. I think Kate Upton and Justin Verlander are getting married this offseason. If he keeps pitching like he's doing, he may not join the club.
  2. INFIELDERS Alfonzo, Edgardo (R) – 2000 Backman, Wally (S) – 1986 Clendenon, Donn (R) – 1969 Harrelson, Bud (R) – 1973 Hernandez, Keith (L) – 1986 Uribe, Juan (R) – 2015 Weis, Al (S) – 1969 Wright, David (R) – 2015 Man, this week is just not breaking well for Ray Knight.
  3. The funny thing is that the edict was issued in response to the Yankees firing of a manager. Like, back in 1985 or something.
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: Girardi is originally a Chicago guy. The Cubs are set but the White Sox are stocking up on prospects lately and may be a good landing spot for him in a year or two. This year's Yanx actually under-achieved their pythagorean projection by a whopping Nine games as their RS/RA ratio [858 / 660] suggested they should have been a 100 win team this season instead of the 91 they actually won. I doubt that that alone was enough to sway MFY mgmt especially since it was coming off the 2016 when they managed 84 wins despite a negative RS/RA Do you think the Pythagorean differential is a good metric to judge a manager on? It's a useful tool and should be part of the conversation, I guess, but I have my doubts. If the team wins a game by knocking out the pitcher early, and then runs up a 17-2 score against increasingly weaker pitchers (which seemed to happen with unusual frequency in this highly volatile season), but they lose 6-5 the next day, they look bad Pythagoras-wise. But were they? I don't know. I know you're not saying that, but I'm asking.
  5. Verlander has switched to the curve in an age of the fastball-slider pitcher. And it's absolutely fooling people out of their pants.
  6. Yankee fans I'm talking to seem to think the search will be quick and it'll be Jay Bell's job.
  7. He's already done the Florida thing. Got along terribly with his bosses there. Do you think he and Jeter have a relationship strong enough to fire Mattingly over? As far as sitting on this until the Mets left the marketplace, sure, why not? But that also means sitting on it until several other teams had snatched candidates off the shelves also. Hey, Yankees, sure, the Mets won't get Girardi, but now you won't get Calloway. Suckers.

  9. Mets.com also lists him still on the roster, but I guess the free agents haven't aren't officially declared yet.
  10. Boom. Puig goes down hacking Houston takes it.
  11. Two out in the 11th, and just as I'm question carrying this character name Charlie Culberson and his .497 OPS over Granderson, the guy homers to left-center.
  12. All hail Springer!
  13. Still, trading deuces in the tenth is sweet.
  14. "Yeah, hi, Chris. It's Edgy in Baltimore." "Calling in from a long way out, there, Edgy. What can I do for you?" "I read today that the Mets released Erik Goeddel, Tyler Pill, Travis Taijeron, and Phillip Evans. Also, Wuilmer Becerra. Am I saying that right?" I'm looking at the producer and he's nodding." "So they're gone?" "They're not released, Edgy. What this is is something that happens every winter. They've been removed from the roster, presumably to make room for some better players coming up under them, or to be brought on board later." "So the Mets get to keep them?" "Well not so fast. They have to pass through waivers. Another team can claim them if they have room on their roster." "Because Pill looked bad, sure, but he was rushed through in the middle of a crisis. And Evans looks like he can hit a little. He's fat but he gets around." "I hear you, Edgy, but look, the Mets won 70 games. And if they are going to do better, it's not going to be done by getting too sentimental about these spare parts on a losing team." "But they protected Tommy Milone?" "Wait ... what?" "Tommy F. Milone." "I hear you. I frankly hadn't even THOUGHT about that guy. He's really still on the roster?" "He is! Tommy Milone! Alternated injury with futility all year." "I got nothing for you, Edgy." "The guy started five games, relieved in six, won zero, put up an 8.56 ERA, and HE'S the guy they don't want to expose to waivers? Did he got to high school in Brooklyn or something?" "Look, they put me on the air because presumably I know a thing or two about baseball. That's the working assumption. But if you're asking me what the Mets are thinking, I simply cannot enlighten you." "OH, WE'RE THE METS! WE DON'T WANT TO EXPOSE TOMMY MILONE TO WAIVERS! SOME OTHER TEAM MAY STEAL TOMMY MILONE!" "Next caller, you're on the air ..."
  15. Well, until some other transactions take place, the opening day infield is something like Smith-Cabrera-Rosario-Flores.
  16. Well, the brain beat the heart, anywhoop.
  17. I dunno, but he sure hit circles around Turner in 2013.
  18. We're really confusing and conflating years here. This was the offseason going from 2013 to 2014. The guy who got his spot wasn't Campbell or Flores, but Josh Satin. Turner, unlike Rivera, was out of options, so if you don't believe he can play shortstop, choosing was necessary.
  19. According to Amazin Avenue, the Mets opening day infield in 2014 was, Ike Davis, Daniel Murphy, Omar Quintanilla, Josh Satin, Ruben Tejada, and David Wright. If that's correct, and you accept that the Mets had lost faith in Turner as a shortstop (I know I had), then the guy they appear to have chosen over him was Josh Satin.
  20. On this day 31 years ago, Ray Knight scored a run.
  21. Keith Olbermann on Norman Lloyd, Dodger fan. [fimg=600]http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img=%2Fphoto%2F2017%2F1024%2Fr279201_1296x729_16%2D9.jpg&w=920&h=518&scale=crop&cquality=80&location=origin[/fimg]
  22. I think I saw the lack of hustle, as well as the fattening and the not hitting much at all until later in the season when the race was mostly out of reach. On July 31, his OPS was at .615. Doesn't mean I agreed with the move or that it was good. It clearly wasn't.
  23. A good chance TJ-squared opens the season on a rehab assignment also. Mets Roster Central is projecting an infield of Cabrera, Cecchini, Flores, Reynolds, Rosario, and Smith.
  24. Cabrera is, reportedly, looking like the winner. Reyes' next destination will be interesting.
