I'm not sure what disaster approach you're referencing. But if you hire abusive managers that tell coaches to fuck themselves, and insubordinate coaches that tell managers the same, that's generally bad no matter what the backgrounds of the principals.

Andre Ethier is still on the planet? And he's still a Dodger, you say? Will James Loney be appearing?

They are so going to lose.

An oral history of the genesis of the rainbow unis.

I wouldn't match up photos of young Ron Gardenhire with old Ron Gardenhire very quickly if I wasn't familiar with both.

I think, when he visits, he's logged in.

Well, if Gabriel Byrne isn't available, Manny Acta, Charlie Manuel, Bobby Valentine, José Oquendo, Joe McEwing, Chip Hale, Tim Bogar, Don Wakamatsu, Tony Peña, Ken Macha, Phil Garner, Mike Jorgensen, Ken Oberkfell, and Lee Mazzilli all come to mind.

It's all relative. I don't think highly of him relative to other available guys, yeah. You need a guy who can help see the angles in the heat of the game. Gabriel Byrne in Miller's Crossing. Dusty never struck me as that guy.

And a hunnert degrees in the shade.

I think a guy usually gives it a year or two after he leaves a managing job before returning to the dugout as a bench coach. But, considering all the years he's put in and all the BS, he may be ready for his next act. Not my first choice, though.

I'm pretty sure Nymr's got you blocked. But the MLBPA isn't the last word on whether the draft and other cost-control maneuvers aimed at amateurs persist. I hope it all comes crashing down tomorrow.

Promotion/relegation wouldn't work in an established North American sport, for a variety of reasons: money, merchandising, broadcasting, but most importantly talent development. Aside from what goes on in places like the Dominican Republic, for the most part clubs are dependent on drafting players out of college or high school. In leagues that utilize promotion/relegation, player development is generally handled by the clubs themselves from a younger age, and clubs typically are able to develop their own local talent. Blowing up the current pipeline is something that is probably structurally impossible, and would undermine the great equalizer of sports - the draft. I disagree with all of this. Other sports in other countries have lots of money, scads of merchandising, oodles of broadcasting, and great big gobs of talent development. They also have rights. The draft isn't an equalizer and never was. It is and always was a way for powerful men to screw the powerless out of their right to sell their talent on an open market.

Interesting that Sandy is the only one who shaved for the occasion. Also notable that Fred and Sol are absent, though they were on the scene when Terry got introduced back in 2010.

Ackert: "Pitching coach? How will that be handled?" Sandy: "We'll put together a list. Already have partial one. We will work collaboratively. Yeah, he's a former pitching coach and that's important. Mickey will be focused on entire roster. So a pitching coach is important. Want an expert." Tom Aaron: "Biggest challenge?" Mickey: "Need to sit down and figure out the things that need to be addressed." Kevin Maher/News 12: "Key to staying healthy?" Mickey: "Treating folks as individuals. Everyone needs to know their individual plan." Concludes formal portion.

Daily News: (couldn't hear) first thing you'll do. Mickey: "Reach out to players. We're getting to work right away." Cotinho: "What has your past made you into?" Mickey: "Tito shows what it takes to be a really good manager. Preparation. Cares about everyone."

Bruce Beck: "Balance being liked and respected?" Mickey: "You don't care about being liked. You care about them. You love and respect them. Tons of tons of communication." (sounded like Terry!)

Lewin: "When did you think about managing." Mickey: "When I was rehabbing my arm and took over a D3 school in Laredo, TX. Went back to playing but was still thinking about coaching. I had a plan—pitching coach, then manager, and someday, I'd like to be a GM." (paraphrase) Pete McCarthy: "Why this team, this group." Mickey: "Greatest city in the world. Also liked the sound of what Sandy, J.P., and Jeff were saying. We were in alignment. The pitching can be some of the greatest guys on the planet. The position players also in that category." (paraphrase)

Steve Gelbs: "Sandy, you mentioned two rounds of interviews. Why did you bag that after meeting Mickey?" (paraphrase) Sandy: "Intellectual. Consistency between his approach and our approach. Emotionally, we came out of the meeting excited. Visceral. That was consistent throughout the group."

He had a "great, great" phone call with David Wright. He's going to be incredible, incredible. We'll be tired of winning. No seriously, he says, "We're going to care more about the players than anyone ever has before." "Value their work, value they way they collaborate, value their dedication and commitment." Not going to measure their success in numbers. Good! Bad! I dunno!

Telling stories of Casey Stengle, his brother's namesake.

Dude killing it in the press conference. Lots of thanks!

I'm glad he's ended up in central booking rather than the hospital or morgue. He may be a famed pug, but he's also a heart attack survivor.

This is official (even as the Jerry Blevins re-up isn't yet), so make room in your schedules at 4:00. Callaway wore the journeyman's 13 as an Indians coach. As a big league player, he wore 61 initially, before dropping to 51 and ultimately the more welcoming 36. Pedro Lopez's status remains unknown. I'm predicting he stays in the organization for at least another season. Maybe he even gets a shot at that MLB bullpen coaching job.
