Very episodic. Of course, that's sort of how Scandinavian folklore reads. Hørl walked for a bit and was set upon by evil troldes. He fought them off and then slept. The next day he walked on and encountered the Fossegrimen, whose music enthralled him. But he outsmarted the Fossegrimen and then he slept.

How can the Braves be perhaps THE model of a baseball organization from 1990 to 2007, under John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox, and then after promoting Schuerholz to president, make pretty much every wrong move possible? I half think that teams trying to swing new stadium deals take their eyes off of baseball matters at a certain level, and foxes get into the henhouse. And maybe the backscratching ethic that surrounds such deals starts to permeate the business. That's probably more than half bullshit, but it's a notion that occurred to me. Anyhow, relegate the Braves! Promote the AAA championship game winner Durham Bulls!

I'm kind of surprised that Chipper didn't get 3,000 hits. He faded late in his career, as players do, and lost some time to injury, but his next bad season will be his first.

It seems to me, even though you can do the most sophisticated analysis on his major league performance, you're doing yourself a dis-service not using the minor league data, even though tracking technology is absent. But they get to the nut in the first paragraph. Rosario did badly for two reasons that had very little to do with launch angle and exit velocity. Three walks and 49 strikeouts. That's bad no matter what. That said, he has a history of being noticeably overmatched upon his introduction to a level, and then making adjustments, so we'll see.

Yeah, I think one of the reasons I'm rooting for a high OBP to join the Mets infield is that I expect that they'll be carrying Rosario's bat for much of the year.

Zach Cozart is a free agent infielder that wasn't given a qualifying offer. His OBP ballooned last season to .385, 14th in all the majors. Steamy thinks it's an unrepresentative spike and predicts he'll drop back down to a .326 figure in 2018, but I'm intrigued.

José is looking at a projected .317 OBP, and Wilmer a .316 figure. Wilmer is projected to slug .475, however, which easily wins the day among our candidates. He is also the only one of the figures already under control.

Let's ask Steamer! Steamer projects Kipnis with a .330 OBP. That's not particularly good. Kinsler's projected at .326, which on first glance, seems lower than .330. Boo! Lastly, we have Neil Walker, who Steamer suggests is looking at .346 OBP in 2018. As unattractive as re-upping one of last year's enlistees might seem, Neil looks like a good-ish deal, relative to those two.

It depends. I mean, if Walker drives a higher salary or more years, he ultimately costs talent, insomuch as talent and money eventually become convertible. Of course, I'm not sure how prohibitive the asking price on Walker will be. I think the Mets will go for one infielder, and I'd like that guy to be as much of an OBP guy as they can corral. Among Kipnis, Kinsler, and Walker, I'm not particularly certain who that guy is.

And yet, he was probably more valuable than co-winner Willie Startrek.

It seems kind of stinky that Lee Mazzilli didn't get any MVP votes in '79. It's a miserly complaint for a year when the co-winner shouldn't have even been in the picture, but it's kind of stinky.

It's worse than ever!

CLAY IT AIN'T SO is a criminally bad headline. I object to its existence!

I've tweeted to back page editors for all three NYC tabloids to promote the Derby. I think betting will be heavy.

No, the idea was that all folks voting, if even it it's just an empty ballot, should click "I VOTED" because that way we'd (in theory) have a meaningful denominator with which to calculate percentages. Because the polling system stinks in this regard.

Indeed. And a pretty mediocre one in the Met after-after-life.

Chipper Jones' support has reached 125% of the electorate. I'm pretty sure that would beat Ken Griffey's total.

Gwreck wrote: The PED nonsense is tiresome. Players who did not fail tests or were not subject to testing with penalties need to be considered. They are considered. Interesting that, among tainted players, Bonds is getting five votes out of seven but Clemens and Sheffield have gotten three and Sosa two.

I'm the only vote for Andruw Jones. Most valuable defensive centerfielder ever plus a great peak on the offensive side.

Edited for polling.

Being scandalized by Mr. Met's graphic fall from grace is kind of a lost point if they're going to go with the photo of him doing it. Lots of puns on cusswords here, too.

I welcome Purke to the table. And considering right now Josh Smoker is the second lefty out of the pen, and Smokey had a crap season any way you slice it (but that WHIP of over 1.7 sums it up nicely), Purke has a good chance to be a name you'll hear again.
