Teams tend to get an idea of whether team in front of them has their eye on a player. With the Mets drafting 12 slots ahead of the Royals, this was the equivalent of the trading-to-move-up move common to the NFL amateur draft.

It happens, man. I know. I miss Burch too.

Well, the beat writers word didn't last 'til the end of breakfast. Burch Smith!

I reluctantly went with GOD OF BLUNDER, but it's no THORRIBLE!

Today sucks.

Man, that's not how you spell Damien Magnifico! The Mormons never would have survived in the desert without the leadership and fortitude of Burch Smith.

Rule 5 (or V) Day has come upon us. It is the Great Day of Betrayal, when farm directors across baseball hide all their fringiest prospects in cupboards and outhouses and under floorboards, while secretly plotting to steal hidden gems from all their colleagues. Me, I'm excited. I'm excited because of 2009 Mets draftee Damien Magnifico. Damien went unsigned and instead enrolled in Trucks-in-the-Mudd Junior College or somewhere. But not before being prematurely adopted by the Edgy household, who fell under the stupid spell of his marquee name. But the adoption was brief. He later signed with the Brewers and moved on to the Baltimore system and later the Los Angeles Angels of Whatever, and is now available to be plucked back to where he always belonged. Guys the Mets may lose? Look for David Roseboom and Adonis Uceta to get some smells. Some have wondered about the resurgent Jhoan Urena, too, but I don't see him faking it for a year on a big league roster. The bigger pitching staffs get, the harder it is to secretly carry a hitter who can't carry his weight.

There's the possiblity of a re-emergence by that crazy Mejia, and possibly other Tim Peterson-y guys we didn't see last year who've matured a full season. And possibly Chris Flexen-y guys or Marcos Molina-ish dudes who have started to date but reached a point in their careers where the bullpen is the best opportunity for them. Bullpen building is alchemy.

Yeah, the difference in years can often be worth a player or two, when the marbles are counted out. But while this guy may be arguably better than that guy, and that guy arguably better than the other guy over there, I think Brian Dozier is pretty unambiguously better than Walker. I got no particular problem with bringing Walker back, but I'd still prefer more of a table setter — high OBPs, top-of-the-order, base-running skills at some level, etc. On the other hand, the funny thing about Walker's 2017 is once the Mets traded him to Milwaukee, he walked like a fiend.

Nobody cares about poor Paul Sewald. Sheesh.

Reporting seems to suggest this a done deal, a closed circle, a consummated marriage. This would bring the Mets up to the roster limit, with (1) the Rule V Draft coming (checking the Google) ... tomorrow! and (2) still only three outfielders on the roster expected to be healthy for opening day. The Mets are going to do some changing in the coming weeks, one way or t'other. Part of me wonders if they'd be better off trying to make a late cut-in and out-bid the Cards for Ozuna. But yeah.

Stinking it up as a 2016 Yank can only endear him to me. Like Pedro Feliciano, picking the Yankees pockets should be seen as a résumé enhancer.

Yeah, of all the Pauls in Mets history, Lo Duca is the one that most readily comes to mind when you use the name "Paulie." It's like he should just change his last name to "Walnuts."

I remember that summer at Carrasco Point. Good times, man.

While looking at the projected roster, trying to see who was the most immediately threatened by the arrival of Anthony Swarzak, it quickly appeared to be a choice between Chasen Bradford and Paul Sewald. Looking at their relative performances, it became clear that Sewald was now on the outside looking in. That's a tough enough pill to swallow, but beyond that, Paul looks like he's heading back to minor leagues with a hell of a monkey on his back, having somehow compiled an 0-6 win-loss record during his 65 innings of big league work. That makes Sewald the losingest of all Mets pitchers without a big-league win on their ledger, surpassing oh-and-fiver Colin McHugh on September 19 when AJ Ramos blew a 4-1 lead in the ninth, yielding to Sewald with two outs and the bases loaded. Paulie briefly saved the Mets' necks by striking out the hard-to-get Christian Yelich, only to return for the 10th and grab the loss by surrendering a long, one-out homer off the bat of J.T. Realmuto. Oh and six.

Holy smokes.

Apparently there were still a few voiceless velar plosives in the deck waiting to be dealt. Nicely played, seawolf.

There are a lot of K's and hard C's going around. I'll say that much.

I'm uncomfortably reminded of the first free agent deal Sandy Alderson gave out as a Mets GM: two years to DJ Carrasco. In the world of relievers, most live year to year, and then there are the maniac save compliers who generate three-to-five-year deals. But there's the small David Weathers-y population in between. A journeyman vet righthander who has seemingly stabilized to the point where they get trusted with the two-year deal. But maybe it's only living year-to-year that helps stabilize such guys. That's probably unfair, but at $7 million per year I wonder. Anyways, welcome to the Mets, Swarzie.

I don't think so. The point of picking up the option is they believe it suits the market for Kinsler, or is a below-market salary, and therefore he's worth something as a trade chit, rather than just letting him walk. It doesn't necessarily mean they'll insist on driving a hard bargain. Mets made the same gamble on Jay Bruce, and then they lost? And then they won? and then they either lost or won when they flipped him for Indians relief prospect and male stripper Ryder Ryan.

Jeff Passan reporting that the Angels have detected a first-degree sprain of Ohtani's UCL. Man, sometimes I think those things just get messed up just by signing with an American organization.

Always plenty of relief talent. The offseason is a marathon, man.

It certainly could. I have my doubts, but if it costs him even one or two votes, it could cost him the opportunity to overtake Ken Griffey, Jr. in the highest-percentage category. And that's a victory for everybody.
