It was typically ranked around #2 or #3 just a few years earlier, and then in recent years it has both graduated many players, including 4 of their top 5 prospects from the previous season, and been gutted by trades as the 2015 and 2016 team muscled up. Heck, Law ranked it #7 even as recently as last January. It's been a terrible year, but it's like judging an orchard after a pruning.

The implications are, i think, that if they can afford to make new investments they can't be as cashed strapped as we're claiming they are that they need to pilfer (an undisclosed, private amount of) profits from the Mets/SNY and they should've just sunk that investment money into the Mets. The Wilpons do continue to invest the Mets. When the team sold off minority shares, it was members of the Wilpons and their companies (like SNY) that bought in. That was a cash infusion. Unfortunately for payroll watchers, a lot of that cash went to pay off many of the team's non-payroll obligations, which is the ongoing issue. But liquidating one or leveraging one asset to invest in another is what guys like this do. This is probably a good point to get into this scheme (or they see it as such), and they probably think it'll help the Mets down the road. Whether it will is another story. I think the reality the last few years has that there's a level of debt service the organization has had to prioritize before expanding payroll, and they have to get budget approval by their creditors. That may have eased during the periods of success in recent years, but (and I'm going deeper into speculation here), restrictions may have returned following 2017's declining success and declining revenues.
  5. Lind gives you a little more OBP and a little more outfield versatility. Adams had a great half season for Atlanta, but on a one-year dealio, I'll take Lind's modest track record, older though he may be.
  6. I don't know if they're hitting a dead spot or not. It's December. But four of their top five prospects* all "graduated" in the second half of last year, and are neither being counted as among their minor league assets nor particularly among their major league assets this season. It's unclear which of them will perform going forward, but they are certainly still assets. I tend to think teams shouldn't be ranked on their minor league systems so much as their talent under X age. Why should one team get points for having a 22-year-old shortstop in AA, while another team comes up short despite having a 21-year-old shortstop starting in the majors? Beyond that, a bunch of talent got traded off in 2015 and 2016 that would have otherwise been blossoming now, but has yielded a meaningful return in big league wins. According to the MLB.com list, anyhow (#'s 26, 28, and 29, too).
  7. It's not like 2017 was the sum total of his tenure. And the system isn't bare so much as it was in a growing cycle his first few years, and has been pruned the last three.
  8. It snuck under the radar, but ... well, apparently, a month ago, the Dodgers signed Travis Taijeron. I mean CBS sports and SNY reported it, but milb.com still has him listed as part of the Vegas roster. If it's true, fair tidings to him in parting. He played three PCL All-Star quality years in Vegas, while the Mets resisted calling him up, seemingly insisting that his was the sort of performance that wouldn't translate to the bigs, and when they were forced to call him up anyway, they appeared to be seemingly right.
  9. That statue is a lot of things, but it ain't Art Deco.
  10. A post invisible to your eyes declared the Mets to have garnered two first-place finishes in the previous 30 years.
  11. Officially, terms have not been announced. That's not particularly surprising, as far as salary goes, but they also haven't released, even by leak, any indication of the duration, leading to speculation that Alderson is going year-to-year, perhaps by choice, perhaps not. "Unfinished business" is the term he used. Maybe he hoped to walk away after this season, but just couldn't after the outcome.
  12. The Mets have announced Sandy Alderson has gotten an extension. It's curious that this has been finalized this deep into the winter, and I'm curious to see if this changes the course at all.

MFS62 wrote: But from the numbers above, about 15 % of eligible voters share that opinion, as do some of the other CPF-ers. Not voting for Edgar Martinez is not the same as excluding him outright because he's a DH.
  15. MFS62 wrote: But to me, "Player" involves the classic 5 tools; hit, hit with power, field, run, throw. And IMO to be a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, a player must do those things well enough to be worthy of the Hall, even if they don't do one of them (like run) particularly well. This is inherently contradictory. A player must do all five of these things "well enough to be worthy of the Hall" while not doing them "particularly well"? That's impossible. If a failure to do any one of these at a Hall of Fame level is disqualiftying, then 80% of the guys already in are disqualified. Hank Aaron didn't field particularly well. Who knows how early he'd've been moved to DH, with or without his consent. He's also one of the greatest players ever to wear a pair of underpants. MFS62 wrote: But he must DO them. It's just untrue that he didn't field.
  16. MFS62 wrote: Edgy MD wrote: If pitchers who never hit are eligible and are enshrined, why not hitters who never fielded (though Martinez actually played over 500 games on defense)? A pitcher's ability to hit is not part of the job description of "pitcher". That seems arbitrary. A hitter's ability to field is not part of the job description of "hitter." But both are part of the job description of player. One guy gets protected from his weakness by a rule he never asked for, and isn't penalized. Another guy gets protected from his weakness by a rule he never asked for, and is penalized — indeed, disqualified from the Hall of Fame. Why? We have no real evidence to conclude that, had the DH rule not been available to his managers, he wouldn't have been in the lineup. Nor do we have any reason to conclude that he played the field any more or less than Honus Wagner or Ron Santo or George Kell would have, had the DH rule been available to their managers. The only fair thing to do is to give him a zero on defense for the years he didn't play, and judge him by his bat alone. You can even give him less than a zero, believing that his lack of a glove and presence at DH puts a lesser hitter into the game on average. This puts him at a disadvantage to Mike Schmidt and George Brett (and Wagner and Santo and George Kell), but doesn't exclude him outright. I don't like the rule either. But to declare year in and year out that he's never going to get your vote in order to make a point about a rule he had nothing to do with creating seems miserly. What if he hit 1,000 homers and stole 1,500 bases? We're still going to screw him because five years into his career, his manager had a lineup that just fit together best with him DH'ing, and the rest just went along with it?
  17. If pitchers who never hit are eligible and are enshrined, why not hitters who never fielded (though Martinez actually played over 500 games on defense)?
  18. Let's just say I find him interesting.
  19. When Keith Law sees a safe bet (and the notion that Adrian Gonzalez isn't going to set the world on fire is a pretty safe bet) he triples down. See his excoriating review of Tim Tebow. I suspect that, for prospect watchers, writing about unknown futures is so filled with grey areas, and so exposes them to accusations of "you were WRONG about Jacob deGrom! And Justin Wilson suxx!" that when they see something like solid ground, they are tempted to plant their flags in it deep.
  20. A perfectly flippable asset. Not a bad plan at that.
  21. I don't know about you, but it's not an off-season for me until somebody loses a member of their starting rotation due to an "incident with a bull." [tweet:1ok31s0s] [/tweet:1ok31s0s]
  22. The era has also given us a surfeit of sluggers at the top of the ballot relative to starting pitchers. Maybe we need those detached old cranks that were swept out of the electorate after all. I disagree that folks are more focused on who they leave off their ballots.
  23. Gosh, Keef. How do you really feel? [tweet:3n43m06q]https://twitter.com/keithlaw/status/943310276375597056[/tweet:3n43m06q]

  25. We'll record that as an Eric Campbell vote. More seriously, if what's really wanted is a righthander to help Smith against lefties and to have positional flexibility when a need opens elsewhere, the team has that in Flores (or will if and when another infielder is brought in) and in Wright (or will if he recovers enough to play). This is more of a Tony Clarkian hedge against whether Smith is ready at all. The Mets could conceivably sign him and shed him during the spring, I imagine.
