Trlicek. Nice. I was thinking Pedro Beato 2011. But this guy has touched 100 on the gun in the minors. And it's 2017, so I'm seeing a lot more strikeouts than Beato. How about this? He does well, but elbow tendonitis short-circuits his season. 2-3 / 2.60 ERA / 34.2 IP / 32 SO / 19 BB. That's Vic Black, 2014. I'm sorry to report that the elbow tendonitis forebodes worse for 2019.

It's not Buddy, it's IncrediBoy! I got the goofy frames, the big chicklet teeth, and I rear back and let it rip. Like any good superhero, I have an origin story. I disappointingly went undrafted out of high school. I accepted a pretty sweet consolation prize, though, getting a scholarship offer from Oklahoma. Then I gained 40 pounds my freshman year, lost a few feet on my fastball, and got dropped from the program after one year. I sought wisdom, I sought enlightenment, and I sought a way forward. And that could only be found by undergoing The Way of Seaver. So I set off for the Alaskan Summer League, trimmed my diet religiously, and never looked back. Junior College, Division I Texas State, a sixth-round draft choice of the Dodgers in 2013. Ogden, Great Lakes, Tulsa, Rancho Cucamonga, and then finally traded to the Mets in the Curtis Granderson deal. I got a four-seamer in the upper 90s, a cutter in the low nineties, and I've got a mission. We're not talking about just another pitcher. We're talking about a pitcher of destiny. It looks like I've got opening day roster status nailed down. Where will destiny take me in 2018? Lemme know. The thumbnail action shots of the players in the 1989 cover are almost too small to engage with. The thumbnail action shots of the players in the 1991 cover are totally too small to engage with. I went with 1989. The logo ball is a small inspirational leap that would rarely occur after this point.

I nearly played my way off the team in the first third of last season, and while I didn't quite recover enough to "save" my season, I ended up outlasting the field and posting the most plate appearances on the team. I led the team in stolen bases with 24 also. Second most was Lagares and Rosario with seven apiece. A man has to have his pride, you know. And it's that pride that brings me back. Will I be a feast-or-famine player again? Will I be the positive role model for Amed Rosario that the Mets hope I'll be? Will I get comfortable in the outfield? Will I end up out-plate-tripping a bunch of starters again. I'm José Reyes, and I'm only 286 off the all-time Mets lead in base hits. I've got business to attend to. Last year, I beat Familia in Met saves, 7 to 6. I saved 27 between Miami and the Mets. And while saves are over-rated and silly, it's what I write my checks on, so don't look past me. That was more than Familia, it was more than Addison Reed, and it was more than Anthony Swarzak, whoever the hell he is. I'm part of your bullpen. DEAL with it. Yeah, I might have been gobbled up in part to help the Mets corner the market on relievers and squeeze a little bit more out of the Sox for Reed. But I wouldn't be hear if they didn't want me, even if my profile is a little bit Omarish. What's my 2018 going to look like? BecauseI'm a closer without a closer job, with a stack of tatts on my arm, and an ex-Yankee taint. I can't imagine why anybody wouldn't like me. I like numbers, and am a big reader of Mets by the Numbers, but we've really made them into more than they are, and this cover is an example. Numbers are an introduction into a player's wider story. The first word, not the last. The idea that a statue in honor of Jackie Robinson should just be a big 42, or that a film version of his story should be titled 42, is silly, I think. But if this cover is about backs and not numbers, OK. Mebbe I misread.

Ten Facts About Bryce Brentz Yeah, big deal, he's a first rounder, but really he was drafted in the extended portion of the first round. Number 36 overall. If he hasn't had much of a career as yet, numbers 30, 31, 32, 33, 35, and 37 haven't played a single game in the majors among them. Number 38, on the other hand, was Noah Syndergaard. His wife is something of Tennessee hoops legend, amassing an eye-popping 2,700 points in high school, playing all five positions, and another 1,183 points in college. He not only led the International League in homers in 2017, but also won the AAA Home Run Derby. He's not the only source of power in the family. His twin brother is something of a golf champ, specializing in long-assed drives, despite being a double amputee. Once shot himself while cleaning his gun. That's all part of the litany of injuries that have made his career such a slow-launcher. In addition to the gunshot, he's recovered from knee meniscus surgery in 2013, a severe hamstring strain in 2014, and thumb surgery in 2015. Has stereotypical slugger's speed, but has plus arm strength with accuracy. Makes a lot of wind, striking out like one in four trips to the plate. It was closer to 40% earlier in his career, but he attributed that to getting used to contact lenses. Is BFFs with Jackie Bradley, Jr. Their wifeys are buds also. Has been immortalized by Lego.

I'm not sure who I am or where I came from, but I'm on the 40 and I may be gone fast, so get your expectations in now. Until then, I'm looking forward to joining the great tradition of Bob Bailor, Billy Baldwin, Brian Bannister, Billy Beane, Blaine Beatty, Butch Benton, Bruce Berenyi, Bruce Bochy, Bruce Boisclair, Bobby Bonilla, Blaine Boyer, Brian Buchanan, and Brett Butler. batmagadanleadoff wrote: Neither is quite sure what the story of the season is. Which is a shame, because years both had a story to tell. Which season story should a yearbook cover tell: the yearbook's season or the season before? I suppose it depends on the year. Well, the yearbook's season, I think, but if the previous season was particularly lovely, the story you're hoping to tell about the current season is "This season is going to be filled with all the thrills of last year's season, and then some!"

I don't like either of those much. The first has too much white space waiting to be filled in. The second needs a face or two. Excitement isn't in backs. And the notion that Wright and Reyes are represented by fans just says we're hanging on to a past that we can't quite turn the page on. Neither is quite sure what the story of the season is. Which is a shame, because years both had a story to tell.

The world needs a second lefty. It's a thing. Eighth-inning guy, long man, swing man ... second lefty. We talk about getting over the strictness of bullpen roles, and then we SHIT when we don't have guys to line up with strict roles. The Mets don't have a second lefty out of the bullpen on their roster. But they have a second lefty. And that's me. Oh, I'm not going north with the team. I'm going west. But sooner or later, just you wait, young man ... or young lady ... folks will be saying "Where's our SECOND LEFTY?!" And all eyes will turn to me. Or Fernando Abad. Or Kyle Regnault. Or maybe even David Roseboom or Ben Griset or Kelly Secrest. Did somebody say Daniel Zamora? Who the hell is he? But hopefully me. I've been the second lefty guy all through camp and I'm not going to let a late-comer like Abad or a wannabe like Boom take my spongecake. I may have only gotten five innings this spring, but I put up a 3.60 ERA and, frankly, that was five innings more than the rest of those guys. I got cool black-framed glasses and that's SO big league, plus a penchant for beards that speak of TESTOSTERONE. Folks mistake me for Rhame and maybe folks will accidentally give me a call thinking I'm him. That's Purke. Rhymes with quirky, and if that doesn't scream SECOND LEFTY! I don't know what. I'm a thing. I'm happening. But when I'm going to happen and what's going to happen is unknown. You tell me. Sounds like tough news for Phil Evans.

Expectations. They don't cripple a man when he's vying for a backup job like they do an expected starter. For a few years now, lightning has been hitting my buddy Travis d'Arnaud left and right. Fan expectations not met. And I've come up shorter than him, but as his clipboard holder, few of the bolts have come at me. Heck, I even led the team in games caught back in 2015, and mostly stunk up the field while doing it, and still it's all "Travis is HEWJ disappointment!!" But I'm starting the think the clock is running out on my extended grace period. I hit enough in the second half of last year to ignite folks' imaginations. And now I'm expected to at least challenge Travis for top-dogginess, or take the job outright if he flounders. Expectations. I figure I'll do what I do, grind it out, talk some shit about a new swing, and hope the hits drop in. I know I'm breaking camp with this team. What happens next is .... well, it's up to you. It seemed like a cakewalk to Rookie of the Year at that point. Whoops.

Wasn't there a 1986 post-season edition? Or is that just a post-season media guide I'm thinking of?

Coming in 2019, but yeah. Does all this Disney cannibalising themselves end up consigning the earlier films to the dustbin? Do they quietly fall out of circulation like the original cuts of the original Star Wars trilogy?

41Forever wrote: One thing that I always found distracting about the 1970 cover: Wouldn't the photos on the film on the vertical strip appear sideways when projected on a screen? I know, I know. Thinking too hard. But I always wondered why they chose film as a design element. Because the camera was held vertically when shooting that roll. Great job mixing color and b/w photography, and underscoring the fans as part of the story.

Heading to minor league camp, so presumably a minor league assignment to start, but not necessarily. But there's a real good chance he'll be a Mets sooner rather than later. I know you're tempted. You want to put me side-by-side with Corey Taylor in the Mets' media guide under the headline "Who's the Cuter Corey?" Well, much as I love a good Tiger Beat lede, that question lacks for drama. It's Taylor. Seven days a week. He's not even that cute, but it's no contest. But what God didn't bless me in the face, he made up for in my arm. I'm 2017's bad-ass ace pitcher for Binghamton, clocking in with a 2.28 ERA over 134.1 innings. I've flown under the radar despite a 37-18 record over my minor league career. And that's 41-19 if you count my AFL work. There's a good chance I become the ace of the Vegas 51s. I'm also a big mofo, checking in at 6'5" 245. You can't ignore me any longer. Fun fact: I have the distinction of being personally scouted by Paul DePodesta. Funner Fact: I was a position player up until my senior year of high school, but because the rules are stupid, pitchers don't hit in the lower minors, so my skills remained dormant until this year, when I got 14 trips to the plate as a Rumble Pony. I ended up going only 2-13, but both those hits were out of the park. How about that? And how about me? And how about my 2018? Know what's worse than waiting until February 17 to get a big league deal? Waiting until February 17 and settling for an offer from the Phillies. Know what's even worse? Getting cut by the Phillies. Dumped. Tossed on the scrap heap. Right next to Antonio Bastardo, as a matter of fact. But I'm landing on my feet. I'm a Met now. Or a 51. Or a Rumble Pony, whatever that is. Just as long as I'm no Iron Pig. I have my dignity. The Mets looked at me, looked at Bastardo, were all "Been there, done that," and threw me a bone. So what will I be in 2018? Where will my many journeys take me to. Let me know below. So, the Braves just decided they were going to pay the Dodgers' bills this year?

I'm a Mets fan and I could vote for that. I like most of the composition of the 2002 book, though they should probably switch Valentine and Piazza around. (Notice how all the figures are facing away from the middle. I also don't like the 40th anniversary logo, with too many sharp edges. I'll probably go for 2002, though. OE: I went for 1977. Between the bad contrast and the figures facing away from the middle, the logo is lost. I understand that photo to represent Torre filling out his very first lineup card. That's pretty cool, and it's the only real story in town for the second half of 1977. And if the photo is less than ideal, well, it's not posed, man. Sexy wood paneling, too.
