Victory for the Mets and the Nats drop under .500.

And T.J. Rivera pulled from his first rehab game with elbow pain.

What's Jeffrey Maier doing at Citi Field?

An 0-for-3 game last night from Jarred Kelenic was just the glass of calm-down juice I needed. The 2018 first rounder has excitingly hit safely in 13 of 16 games so far as a pro, but all three of those hitless games have come in the last five. Even so, he walked, stole a base and scored last night in The Kingsport Mets’s 5-1 victory over the Greenville Reds. But yeah, calm down, he’s only hitting .390 as a pro. Get a grip. He’s only reaching base at .456 clip. Take a valium, man. He’s only slugging .644. What’s a real curiosity to me, and I think what will determine if he’ll taste any of this productivity at a higher level, is how much an advantage he must’ve had being practically raised in a baseball academy. Maybe his productivity is not so much a product of talent, but that what modest talents he has have been so refined. He probably has a lot more experience with wooden bats, too. So great. He’s got a head start, and such productivity almost has to taper off as he gets to higher levels, but will it flatline as the other players catch up to him in training, and raw natural talent will be more of a determining factor/difference maker. I guess he’s somewhat analogous to Gregg Jefferies in this regard. One comforting reality last night was that Jonathan India, the prospect that the Mets were broadly said to be more interested in, played for Greenville, and he’s hitting just .158 Yeah, he has a barrel-full of walks, but the summer would be that much more turgid if our first round draft choice was off to lackluster start, as opposed to the Keleniffic one we have so far. The truth is that batting acumen is going around for Kingsport. They are second in the league to Elizabethton in batting average, second in OBP, second in slugging, second in OPS, and second in homers (to Johnson City). Kelenic only joined the K-Mets when they promoted Anthony Dirocie to Brooklyn and AD was hitting .408 / .492 / .755 // 1.247, so high-end batsmanship is a defining trait for Sean Ratliff’s squad, with the help of his esteemed batting instructor, Delwyn Young. Josue Matos’ pitching staff isn’t dropping the ball either, except when the drop it into the strike zone for strike three! Taking point for the group is right-handed Venezuelan José Butto, who has redecorated the league to the tune of a 1.25 ERA through his first four starts, covering 21 2/3 innings, striking out 20, while walking only 7. That follows on the heels of a 1.38 ERA last season in the Dominican Summer League. He may be a guy!! You know who’s TOTALLY a guy? Joshua Walker is. The 2017 draft pick has pitched in nine games in the Appy League, totaling 9 innings, and still maintains his virginal 0.00 ERA, having fanned 12, while giving free passes to nobody. And that splendid perfection may be his career line for Kingsport, having already been promoted to Brooklyn A knock comes on your door. It’s your baby sister’s date here to pick her up. You open the door an it’s Andrew Ryan staring back at you with EXACTLY the face he is wearing in his thumbnail photo below. What do you do? WHAT DO YOU DO? Last night’s win helped the K-Mets take 3-of-4 in the series against Greenville, pushing their second-half record to 13-9, a single game out of first in the Applachian League West Division. The lock horns this weekend with first-place Elizabethan, so it should be exciting baseball. Garrison Bryant takes the bump for the good guys. Pat "The Bat" Burrell also. Isn't Ryan Howard still trying to make a comeback somewhere?

I probably open the ninth with Gsellie and lift him after one baserunner.

To the extent that stretching at first is an aggravation, I'd imagine it's more of a strain on the groin than the hammy. #biomechanics

The odd thing about Utley's retirement is that he's actually out-played his partner at second base, Logan Forsythe. With Corey Seagar out and Justin Turner too girthy to move back to the middle of the diamond, they Dodgers are desperate up the middle, and are experimenting with journeyman corner infielder Max Muncey who has been hitting of late, but is nobody's idea of a keystoner. If they are going to deal Cabrera, the time may be now.

One more signing draftee tried to slip past Mets Roster Central last week. This one is a local Copiague product. Root for him. Also noted in a rival thread is the passing of (through waivers) barely used and mostly ineffective Chris Beck. He now reports to Vegas which should be alright for everybody provided Pac-Man Jones doesn't jump him in the airport. Zach Borenstein went 1-5 with a double, and RBI, and a run scored, playing the entire game in left field as the PCL All-Stars won a wild one over the International League All-Stars, 12-7. The AAA leagues got right back in action tonight, as the 51s lead the Albuquerque Isotopes 3-0 in the third on the strength of double by Pete Alonso and Colton Plaia. Jeff McNeil had an 18-game hitting streak stopped in his last game before the All-Star Break. He ended up going 0-2 with two walks and an RBI in that game, which, if you've got to end a hitting streak, that's a better way to do it than most. He's 0-2 tonight, with his average plummeting to .384.

plafff.

Don't bunt, José. Hit and run! Two strikes. Too late.

Wilmer, don't go after the first pitch after the dude walked two in a row.

Cabrera bombs one and the Mets within one. Let's catch these fakirs.

LET'S GO SMIT-TY! Clap! Clap! Clap-clap-clap!
