Yeah, they may well lose the guy, but stick with the agency. CAA has about 1,800 employees, and most of the talent on their roster is from the show bidness world. Van Wagenin isn't even the first principal to jump to the other side of the table. Michael Ovitz, one of the agency founders, would eventually leave to become president at Disney.

I have to say that it's so typical of what baseball is now that the final pitch was Machado up down by four taking a whale of a two-strike swing at a pitch so far outside the strike zone that it almost hit him in the ankle. He arguably didn't see a strike the whole at-bat.

I hope with some reason that a high-end agent wouldn't be unfamiliar with analytics in 2018.

John Henry called them the greatest Red Sox team in history. I tend to agree.

I just woke in the night somehow remembering that thread title.

And it looks like it's all over but the press conference. Here's hoping they quickly re-sign all his clients before completing the ink on his deal.

And I would disagree. Highly. And I would have mountains of evidence to back me up. But if VW is to fill that role, then anybody the organization has selected and will select will be to fill that role, so what's the point of being disappointed in Brodie?

We recorded the big culling of 23 players including Darling Baez, but we haven't yet noted that the Mets released another 20 the next day, and six more a few days later. Among them were a former recipient of a $1 million international signing bonus (Kenny Hernandez) and five members of the organization’s 2017 draft class. I realize dreams end and all that, and no few of these were probably easy decisions, but it seems strange for the team to shed over 50 players while there is no GM in place to sign the warrants. Maybe it's in the rules or at least good form to send these guys packing at the end of September so they can get on with their lives or what's left of their careers, but that's a lot of blood. Take Aaron Ford for instance. Ford was coming off a really sharp season in relief with a 2.03 ERA in the Sally League, but over his two abbreviated campaigns thus far, he'd struck out 65 guys in 47 2/3 innings while walking only nine. NINE! In a career! I've seen Mike Torrez walk more than that in a single game! Maybe he was an enormous asshole, but how do you let that guy go without having a boss to run it by? Gary Cornish you may remember from such films as Suspended for 50 Games for Using Amphetamines. Unless your name is Mazzilli or something, it's really hard to get your career back on track after a minor league drug suspension. Ricky Knapp had made it to Las Vegas in both 2016 and 2017, but never stuck and lost most of this season to injury. And speaking of Mazzilli, also sent into exile are two relatives of Met legends. J.J. Franco, son of John, hit free agency the natural way. Giovanny Alfonzo, nephew of Edgardo and son of Edgar, got hisself cashiered. Sad! Carl Stajdujar, on the other hand, must’ve seen this coming. He looks like a bad ass but a batting line of .137 / .225 / .226 // .451 in a not-insignificant total of 191 plate appearances for Brooklyn is a heckuva reality check. I don't believe there's any reason to believe that Brodie VW would be in any way a cipher for Fred Wilpon to impose his own will on than any other selection would be.

That time it was feared that he was too engaging, too willing to please, that he was in danger of becoming a blank, a people-pleasing automoton.

I don't think I ever knew Torborg had a professional wrestling son. If I once knew that, the memory resides in the fragmented portion of my noggin'. It came up in these parts. It hurt Torborg's tenure with the Marlins, as he hired his son to be a trainer and you can imagine how that worked out, but he's stayed in the game, has been part of two championship teams, and is still the conditioning coordinator for the Chicago White Sox.

I imagine VW has a tough agent to deal with.

Yes, that's my concern. BVW has proprietary information about what it will take to tie his clients down. I don't know that it's possible, but if I was deGrom's next agent, I'd insist BVW recuse himself from negotiations with his his former clients, and keep all client information to himself.

Folks be sayin' the same thing about Bob Geren as manager this time last year. Predicting Wilpons. A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

I was trying to remember that poster's name.

If he gets hired, I nominate "The Demon" as a nickname.

St. Lucie’s season was all about the pitching. If not the pitching, then the pitchers, as a good lot of the Mets’ top pitching prospects came through town. It’s starts with Justin Dunn. Dunnie, who was a non-descript reliever in college before climbing rapidly after becoming a starter his senior year, was also pretty non-descript in a full season at St. Loo in 2017 before starring for them in the first half of 2018. He faded after moving up to Binghamton mid-season, so there are now questions about his durability, to go along with established questions about the repeatability of his mechanics and his lack of a solid off-speed pitch. But he was a knockout in the first half for the Lucitas, posting a 2.36 ERA through 45 2/3 innings. He stuck out 51 and walked only 15. That 3.0 walks/9 is encouraging for what it is, as it sometimes can float up there, especially when he is adapting to a new league, so there may be a few stutter steps before he reaches showtime, but he only gave up two Florida State League homers in that time. But the highlights weren’t always easy to find for Chad Kreuter whose team fell from 63-75 to 54-76 in his second season (sounds like a lot of rainouts. Other big-time prospectos helping the Dunn on the staff were fellow 22-year-old David Peterson and Anthony Kay, southpaws both. Petey dominated in his first 9 starts for Columbia before throwing the last 13 of his season for Loo. He pitched to a 4.33 ERA in 68 2/3 innings. Not knocking your socks off, maybe, but he only gave up one homer. Sir Kay, returning from injury with 10 starts and a 3.88 ERA. Sounds better, but he walked a lot of guys. So all three may not arrive at CitiField like a shower of comets, is what I’m saying. There’s bound to be some growing pains. And maybe other sorts of pains too. But the bullpen really showed up for Kreuter this season, more than anybody else, led by Stephen Villines, who posted a squint-worthy 0.41 ERA in 22 innings. That’s ONE run total! He only gave up seven hits! Sting! Villines — along with Joe Zanghi, Ryder Ryan, and Matt Blackham — was one of four LucieMets to throw at least 20 innings and put up ERAs under 2.00. Four more had ERAs under three! But these guys all know Jacob deGrom’s pain, as Dunn, Peterson, and Kay only nailed down 11 wins among three of them. What modest offense they did get, mostly came from the middle of the diamond. Teenage shortstop Andres Gimenez broke through with a .282 / .348 / .432 // .780 season in .351 plate appearances, while his older sometimes DP partner, 23-year-old Michael Paez, went .270 / .340 / .404 //.744 Gimenez also stole Gimenez also stole successfully 28 times in 39 tires. Big shot outfield prospect Desmond Lindsay didn’t contribute much, getting hurt and being inconstant when healthy, but he’s tearing the ass out of the desert in the AFL right now, so hope yet springs. Ultimately, the team finished dead fucking last in the FSL South Division. Next year, Kreuter will have a few guys 9Walter Rasquin, Jeremy Vasquez, Matt Winaker, and Scott Manea spring to mind) who might help the offense. They had better, if they care about the manager’s scalp. Melvin fatalism takes it on the chin. The giant lantern chin. Very exciting. Then again, the drama ain't over. If it ends up to be BVW, there's going to be some serious howling if Tim Tebow makes the team-o.

That's relevant, but my comment wasn't really in response to anything Andy Martino wrote. Besides, the real Andy Martino would've written "If the Mets aren't serious about Kim Ng, I'll wear a Speedo to Spring Training."

I think of lefties who were effective despite having a surfeit of neither speed or movement, and I think of Tom Glavine.

Yeah, I understand that one could feel like it would be the equivalent of putting on Team B's hat while you're still with Team A.

That doesn't sound like a fair trade.

Yes, Bodie is married to Molly, Neil's step-daughter.

Benjamin Grimm wrote: (I think this poster has it backwards. It seems to be identifying the guy on the left as Loretta Young and the woman on the right as Melvyn Douglas. Actually, the opposite is true. I just wanted to clear that up.) For some reason, this has long been the standard with film posters, with the actors' names deliberately not positioned to correspond with their images. Maybe they think it'll make you study the poster harder.
