I'm only the second one ever born in Belfast. Falls Road, for fuck's sake. But that's all novelty, and novelty wears off. And after getting a few games in with the big club, my minor league season fell to pieces. I've been removed from the roster, and the dream starts all over again. But I'm back in camp. Power is cool — not as cool as being Irish, but power is cool. But I don't bring the power. I'm a soft-tossing lefty and the world still needs one or two of those. My stuff won't blow you away, but it got me to the bigs, and I'm counting on it to help me stick. Cad a cheapann tú? What do you see here?

Anthony Kay shows Metly resilience digging out of a first-and-third, no-out sitchyation, with the pickoff, strikeout, and popup.

A lot of activity over the last week or so for the staff at Mets Roster Central to catch up on, as most have arrived at Spring Training and everybody's looking around the bar at last call. In short: Adeiny Hechevarria: We've reviewed this signing in his own thread. But one thing I hadn't thought of is that this could give Yoenis Céspedes another Cubano to commiserate with, for whatever that might be worth. Gerson Molina: Another Cuban signee, Molina has defied the family name by not being a catcher. He's appeared briefly in parts of four seasons as a teenager in the Cuban National Series, but only amassed 66 trips to the plate, which isn't much to go on. Whatever record he's got apart from that isn't recorded, as he got out of Cuba just about the time he might have been catching on for a more regular role. Warren Saunders: Infielder Saunders comes to the Mets from the Bahamas, were we all now baseball is played from the movie Help! (1965). The Mets released Champ Stuart early in this offseason, so this signing helps them adhere to the Law of the Conservation of Bahamians. Warren is another signing from 2018 that we missed until now. The staff at Mets Roster Central regrets both of these errors. Pat Roessler: From the Yankees he came. And, as you might have guessed, to the Yankees he returns. I believe it's called "The Law of Mazzilli." He's reported to camp in Tampa as an organizational instructor or somesuch, and doesn't yet have an assignment. Matt Gage: Gagey is a minor league vet the Mets brought in during a pitching crunch last season. He did well in AA, but got his tits lit up in the PCL. He came over from the Giants organization where ... he did well in AA but got his tits lit up in the PCL. So the Eastern League may be where the water has found it's level, but he nonetheless has signed with Colarado. Foreboding. Anthony Dimino: The catcher and 2015 draftee had put up high averages and low power in the short season leagues, but topped out at St. Loo before the Mets sent him packing. Unable to catch on with a new organization, he announced his retirement on Instagram. I think that's more of an "I give up" than "I retire," but your mileage may vary. Dale Burdick: DB had been adopted by a Cranpooler, possibly A Boy Named Seo, I'm not sure. The 2014 draftee had shown low averages, but some power. The anti-Dimino. In recent seasons he had struggled with injuries and couldn't get above AA. He now tries to rebuild his career in the Indy Leagues. Carlos Castro: What little I could find out about this signee from buzz around the internet is intriguing if unreliably sourced. He supposedly touches 100 on the gun, despite (a) being previously unsigned at 20 years old, and ( having a slight (5'11", 150) frame. Also, he's supposedly a second or third cousin of Fidel and Raúl Castro, despite being signed out of the Dominican Republic and not Cuba. Ariel Yera: Another Cuban signee (out of Cienfuegos, which is such a cool name, I think I'm gonna start a band). I've found three different birth years for this guy. Joshua Payne: A 2016 22nd-rounder out of West Texas A&M, JP was a big mofo, even by Official West Texas Righthander Standards, listed at 6'6" and 260. As he was released right at the star of camp, I'm going to assume he arrived even bigger. Gio Afonzo: Also known as Giovanny and Giovanni, the son of Edgar and nephew of Edgardo joined the organization early in the season summer, but never gained the traction that helped him go .309/.338/.395 with the Ducks in 2017. He now returns to the Indy Leagues to try again. José Hernandez: Lastly, the Mets new teenaged catcher not only newly becomes the organization's youngest player, but (I believe) the first born after 9/11/2001. Well after. Mets coming. Mets going. =batmagadanleadoff post_id=3310 time=1550872792 user_id=68] Do you really believe that court-packing is as unrealistic as relegation is? I mean, nobody's talking or writing about relegation anywhere other than you.

=batmagadanleadoff post_id=3304 time=1550871264 user_id=68] Oh c'mon already with relegation. Might as well talk about flying monkeys driving flying cars.

The easiest fix is to relegate the last-place teams. Everybody will have motivation to win across all six months of the season, and they'll be playing like gangbusters and signing everybody they can get their hands on right down to the wire. Baseball! Fun! Accountability! Free marketplace!

Without reading the story, I'd guess that increases are due in part to gradually less and less foul territory being in play.

=Centerfield post_id=3236 time=1550774196 user_id=65] Options for 6th Starter: Gsellman and Lugo. Sure. But that takes away from the pen. Corey Oswalt. 5.85 ERA. 1.38 WHIP. Chris Flexen. 12.79 ERA. 3.15 WHIP. Walker Lockett. 9.60 ERA. 2.133 WHIP. (Minor league ERA 4.15 and WHIP 1.291) Kyle Dowdy. 5.15 ERA and 1.48 WHIP in 124 innings last season between Double-A and Triple-A. And maybe someone we're not considering. Dave Peterson or Thomas Szapucki or someone. And sure, I guess any one of these guys could break out. But to rely on that?

I don't think the Mets have opted for B.

https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2017/05/confortoqa.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=618&h=410&crop=1> Left field. You can pencil me in and get out of the way. That's the attitude I'm trying to take, anyhow. But the truth is, while I haven't yet had a bad season, I haven't had one that was overall good. I've had a good first half and a bad second half. I've had a bad first half and a good second half. I went to the World Series in my rookie season, and I realize that this sort of ambiguity isn't going to get me back there. But there have been bumps in the road. A strange, non-contact injury, dislocating my shoulder on a follow-through. That was a bump. Possibly coming back too soon from that injury? That was a wee bit bumpy too. How about trying to pass myself off as a centerfielder? Did you feel that? Trying to convert into a leadoff batter? BUMP! Listen: Even with Canó in the house and even if Céspedes was healthy, I may be the best hitter on the team. I probably am. But I need to avoid them bumps. So what I need from you is to can pencil me into (hopefully) left and (hopefully) the middle of the lineup, and and get out of the way. And I need one more thing. Before that penciling, I need you to tell me how you think I'll do in 2019

Is this the record for "new guy hurts himself"? I feel like Scott Erickson, apart from coming up injured while warming up for his debut, also got hurt at the top of his first (and only) Mets camp. Brandon Nimmo has reportedly been held out of practice with shoulder soreness.

It's just ... this is Def Jeff in a moment of triumph. The poor guy is just so chronically and unrelentingly uncomfortable.

Maybe they'll carry six infielders. They certainly should.

It's not, really. He's the muscle coach. He's in charge of helping the players build strength and conditioning. Chicklo is the health coach. Ideally the muscle coach and the health coach aren't working at cross purposes, but it doesn't always work out that way.

I love Randy Niemann as much as the next guy, but shouldn't this season be all about 69x50 promotionally?

We at a thread at the old place titled "First Base First Place" or somesuch. I still don't know what to expect. Dom Smith is the incumbent, but only nominally. Todd Frazier has the big contract, but was bad enough as a thirdbaseman last year that moving him rightward on the defensive spectrum isn't alluring. Pete Alonso has the big time prospect brand, but only a half-season above AA. And the depth in the infield is pushing everybody looking for at-bats toward first. What's gonna happen? Dominic Smith was trying to swing it as first-base/left field hybrid in the second half of 2018. Mickey says he's just going to play first this spring. That could be great news or terrible news, depending on your perspective. Dom says: “The fans who have seen me play [in the minors] — unless you've seen that Dominic, then you haven't really seen the real Dominic Smith. I'm excited to showcase my talent this Spring Training.” “The sky's the limit. I can hit — I showed glimpses of that last year. When I was up there, I took some of their best pitchers deep. I played some pretty good defense. If I play to my full potential, then I can do that on an everyday basis.” “I don't worry. If you worry, then it's going to be a combination of doubts and fears, and you're not going to be able to play well like that. If I control what I can control, and that's playing hard every day and playing my game, then I'll be the best option there at first base.” Todd Frazier is used to playing 150 games a year, but the Mets starting the offseason with an impressive rookie second-baseman and then going out and acquiring two more is really going to make it too crowded to see that sort of PT at third for Todd. Todd, whose former agent is rookie Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen, says: "We have a really good relationship, he's like family to me, what we've been through. I never had an inkling he would trade me." "He told me, 'We want you here, you're one of the pieces we need. It just might be bouncing around.' I was like, 'All right, let's do it." "We're in a great spot. I'm always a guy that believes in starting fresh. We got new guys coming in and that can only help us. Brodie did a good job getting guys in so we can all move around and let guys play less games than usual. That helps you stay healthy. You look at us on paper, we're a pretty darn good team. Let's go, Mets-on-Paper!! Pete Alonso stock has somehow gone up even after his monster season in 2018. That was followed by more bullish reports from prospect rankers, including at least one scoring him with an 80 out of 80 in the power department. Yowza! He's working on the defense, which has so far received much lower marks. Recently when asked what he thinks about on-deck, he responded "Time to party." The Spicoli act could go from refreshing to biting him in the ass if he doesn't start strong, but I think there are worse approaches to take to the plate than a stoner/surfer zen. Pete says: "It's definitely a different feel from last year because last year I was a non-roster invitee, same as this year but I only had couple weeks of experience in Double-A. Got up to Triple-A last year and I kind of see the light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. So I'm just going to work hard and see what happens." "I feel like I've matured as a hitter and capitalized on more pitches I can drive and laid off bad ones. I mean, that's just [becoming] a more efficient hitter, that's probably the main thing I would say." "I just wanna force someone's hand. Ever since I was a young kid, I've dreamt to become a Major League baseball player. My first word was ball. This is something I've been looking forward to my entire life and I just really want it to happen." Zen requires detachment, Pete. In addition to these three main candidates, second-basemen Robinson Canó, Jeff McNeil, and Jed Lowrie could all grab some time at the cold corner, depending on who's hot and who's healthy. T.J. Rivera, too. Even Travis d'Arnaud is coming to camp with a firstbaseman's mitt. Catch the action!

You know me even if you don't think you know me, and you think about me even if you don't think you think about me. While Mike Barwis sets organizational strength training goals and teaches techniques and invites people to boot camps where he screams at them, I'm the guy in the clubhouse, traveling with the team and supervising their workouts. How much is me, and how much is him, I really don't know, but Edgy decided to include coaches and dugout personnel in this thing this year, and a lot of us are coming at the top of the alphabet. It is an interesting question, though: how much is him and how much is me? Which of us answers to the other? If Michael Conforto throws a rod, which one of us gets spanked and which of us cuddles up to the Wilpons and gets shielded. I know what my answer is, but what do you think?

There's little in baseball more entertaining than an under-enthusiastic Bryce Harper, his manager going through a week-long slow burn, infuriated but restrained by the reality that the team has far more invested in Harper than they have in him.

Great for the Padres, anyhow.

http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/gi/Brian+Chicklo+New+York+Mets+vs+Miami+Marlins+3lYm1YqvZ7Xl.jpg> It's odd that I got the job. It really is. I'm surprised I mean, after years of fans and media blaming my former boss Ray Ramirez (or more generally, "the training staff," which included me) for so much of the Mets media woes, the Mets finally took the message to heart for whatever reason, and cut Ramirez loose. Right? Wrong? Who knows? But they made the decision. But then they offer the job to me. If they're firing him for cause or something, it makes sense to promote me. But if they're trying to break with his philosophy and techniques, you'd think that I'd go with him. But here I am. Now, I don't know if I have a particularly different philosophy, or have studied and trained with more up-to-date information, because I'm not even writing this, but rather some douchebag on a fan forum. I do know that there wasn't a lot more happiness with the injury rate of the team under my training skillz than under Ray's. But hey, our two biggest offensive assets spent most of the year off the field, but that can all be attributed to pre-existing conditions. IT CAN! No, it's NOT an excuse! On the other side, we didn't get a lot of debilitating pitcher injuries, with notable exceptions of Jason Vargas, who got hurt during spring training, and Anthony Swarzak, who also went down early. They were coming in from outside the organization, and so hadn't yet fully taken in the CHICKLO WAY. Ok, THAT'S an excuse. I think it's fair if people are pissed that Michael Conforto came back too quickly, but I'm not sure that was my call, because, again, I'm not typing this. Obviously, more is going to be on me this year. There's probably not a team in the league about whom you can't say, "They'll win a lot of games, if they stay healthy." Healthy. That's my job. How'm I gonna do in 2019?

http://content.sny.tv/assets/images/9/7/6/205273976/USATSI_9506862_k7o4jt4r.jpg?w=600> Do you know me? Why, I'm due to earn $29 million from the Mets this season! I may not be ready until mid-season or I may not be ready at all. But I'm currently walking, and that's supposed to be good. I have a green sleeve, tremendous power, a fabulous arm, and good instincts in the field and on the bases when I am able to stay engaged. But all that is moot until I can get on the field. Let me know how I'll do, and when, if you'll hazard a guess, I'll get on the field.

Here he is in spring 2018. https://image.nj.com/home/njo-media/width620/img/mets_main/photo/ny-mets-spring-training-72567cabb049c999.jpg> If you find any shots from this season, please share. Hopefully he's not still trying to smuggle that sack of rice under his shirt.

I'll jump in a little more bullish but with him getting less than a full season's worth of work, for one reason or another. 125 games .278 / .327 / .464 // .791 with 20 homers and 68 RBI.

That's some bearish (but reasonable) hey-nineteenin' right there. I feel like McNeilio could give them that batting righthanded.
