  1. Well, there's a thing. I have not yet been able to conform to the Alonso-batting-second thing, but after seeing him flailing through the evening yesterday when often all they needed was contact, I salute the contact he made to end the game. I see Canó return to the lineup and I'm all, "Oh, yeah, him."
  2. There were several superlatives in this batch: The Mets are everybody's #1 TARGET. Gooden is baseball's HOTTEST PITCHER. Alfonzo is MLB's MOST UNDERRATED PLAYER. If Frank Thomas could have been baseball's LOSINGEST SLUGGER and Darryl MLB's MOST RELAPSED ADDICT, this group would have really stood out.
  3. Also, if your cover line caption says "Kiss the past good-by," you'd think it would go with a shot of Foster blowing a kiss or something. What you need here is a phrase that puns on the word "shoot" or "shot."
  4. Mickey Jannis will likely never be R.A. Dickey. Among other reasons, his knuckleball, when it's working, doesn't dart out of the strike zone, but instead drops. So he doesn't produce prodigious strikeout numbers. Last night's stellar debut featured only three of them, but instead generated 14 ground ball outs and only two hits and one walk against his ledger. The win brought his career total with the franchise to 22 — third all time in the record books that pre-date the Rumble Ponies re-branding. It also helped them keep pace with a red-hot Trenton Thunder team, who has won five in a row, and sits atop the division, 2.5 games ahead of the second place Ponies in the Eastern League Eastern Division of the East-Most Easterners. It was the sixth win in the last 10 for the Carousel Horses. Not bad, considering they endured a no-hitter in there. The game also featured two hits and the game's lone RBI from Braxton Lee, who may have an urban sounding name but is such a http://www.milb.com/images/657658/generic/180x270/657658.jpgdimpled Bible Belt white guy that he makes Brandon Nimmo look gangsta. Braxton, who spent some time with the Marlins last season before getting claimed off waivers in the offseason by the Mets, has been heating up, going .333 / .444 / .466 // .910 over his last 10 games, raising his overall line to .300 / .386 / .460 // .846. If the lefty-hitting/righty-throwing spray-hitting BraXton can show some power or even steal at a more effective rate than he has shown, he may get himself back on the big league track. He's demonstrated himself to be a really good ballhawk with an above average arm. But “If he really works hard, he can be the next Matt den Dekker!” isn't the most thrilling scouting report. But still, we root. And when you're rooting, it's hard not to root for starting pitcher Harol Gonzalez, because when Harol pitches, there's never any D. Get it! No D!!! Anyway, Harry is one of those guys who alternates intriguing good years with enigmatically poor ones. And he needs a good one this year, because last season was just a massive kick in the balls. I mean, he took two steps back, lined it up, thrust himself forward and planted a huge punt right in the organization's crotch. How else can you describe a season in which a guy is healthy enough to get 22 starts, but goes 1-16 with a 4.80 ERA across three levels? The heart of that season was an 0-9 / 7.79 campaign with this very same Binghamton squadron. So, lucky to have a job still, Harol has already produced more wins in two 2019 starts than he did all of 2018. So, at 2-0 / 2.03 through 13 1/3 innings, he's already giving the Mets just what they need to indulge his career a little further. With 19 strikeouts against only two walks, he has certainly given the Mets the sort of 180 they need to see with a new regime in place. (Due disclosure: I adopted Harol at the old forum.) When you get starts like that, you want to finish them up with a reliever like Ryley Gilliam. Though the name sounds like that cute chick you remember from The OC, Ryley is in fact a 2018 fifth rounder out of Clemson who has produced a 2.17 ERA so far in his minor league career. He's just now only recently joined Binghamton from St. Lucie, and thrown only one inning. Why should I be telling you about a guy who has given the Ponies only one inning? Because it was an impeccable inning, facing three guys and whiffing all three. I wouldn't guess any other members of the 2018 draft class has made it this far, but it is said in certain Eastern countries that if you make love while Rylie Gilliam is on the mound, your baby will be blessed. The action continues tonight at home against those same Ducks of Rubber, as the http://www.milb.com/images/660874/generic/180x270/660874.jpgelvin-eared Michael Gibbons looks to continue his solid start. 5. https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/drew-smith.jpg> Among Drew Gagnon, Andrew Church, and myself, there were several practicing, observant Drews in St. Lucie this year. But you know the story. Three Drews came into camp, and two came out. Tommy John surgery. There were three monkeys in the bed, we all rolled over and one fell out. I'm Drew Smith and I was that monkey. The sad part — well, among many sad parts — is that I was in a good position to make the team out of camp. Of all those relievers on the bubble, I was at the head of the line. That's a mixed metaphor. I was at the ... crest of the bubble? What the fuck is the bubble, anyhow? I'm sorry about the language. I'm kind of in a pissy mood. I was a third-round righthanded Texan, working my way up through the Tampa Bay system when, at the end of 2017, somebody tapped me on the shoulder and told me I was going to New York for Lucas Duda. Well, Lucas is a big hunk of Polish sausage, so that kind of made me feel good. Then, at the end of 2018, they called me up, and I felt better. I got to wear the Rusty Staub commemorative patch and everything. And when I pitched effectively in those last few weeks, well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. There I was, in a position to break camp with the team at start of 2019. I appeared in four games in spring training, threw four innings, gave up no earned runs, and then POW!! My elbow 'sploded. So it's a rehab year. And since there's a new GM who didn't trade for me, he has no stake in me coming back to help is reputation along. I'm just another arm to him. Just another injured arm. So, it's me and Netflix this year. And maybe that's the year you can predict for me. Will I watch Reign? The OA? Gotham? I know Riverdale is shit, but I can't turn that one off. Is it a guilty pleasure or am I just hate-watching? Am I totally gay? I'm gay, right? And when, by God, is the new Stranger Things coming? I can't wait forever. I'm Drew Smith, and the truth is that I can wait longer than most. Tell me how my rehab is going to go and when I'll be back on the field.
  6. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Alonso looked like a guy who was going strike out 250 times a year. Yeah it seems like the book is getting around the league. Feed him sliders and changeups low and away and he'll chase them like a ravenous coyote. One more Tuesday surprise like that and Frazier's new nickname will be "Mardis Gras."
  7. I went with Foster. Never called on to be the personality of the Reds, even at the times he was their best player, he came to New York as the big cheese only to reveal that he didn't seem to have much more of a personality than Kingman. Yet here he is, closing his eye and ... shooting a baseball? Whatever. He's acting funny and comfortable and engaging which is captures exactly 8% of his Mets tenure. And speaking of percentages, how about NEW YORK SUNDAY NEWS MAGAZINE letting their cover subject obscure 80% of their masthead? "Hey, if they're trying to read the masthead, that means they already bought the paper!" It also gets my sympathy, as I too spent my college freshman year pleading, "Please don't call me 'genius'."
  8. Mickey Jannis finally made his 2019 debut, throwing seven two-hit shutout innings against Akron as the Rumble Ponies scratched out a https://www.milb.com/gameday/rubberducks-vs-rumble-ponies/2019/04/30/571657#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=5716571-0 victory over the Rubber Ducks.
  9. Turned around. Big moment. Big win for Gagnon, too.
  10. I guess deGrom wouldn't have scored on that either. Not a whole lot of Mets would've.
  11. You think we should put deGrom out there to run for Davis?
  12. I told you Gagnon would become a contributor.
  13. Conforto grinning like Nimmo there. Nice tack-on.
  14. Both Mets firstbasemen get eaten alive by that slider.
  15. I tend to think Votto has amazingly had his head in the game night after night, year after year, with mostly terrible Cincinnati teams. Great to have him playing against the Mets the night his head was up his ass. Lucky us. The vengeful-God theory takes a big hit, there.
  16. Nope. Big moment coming up for Familia-Guy.
  17. Frazier seems like a stranger on this team, but he's more familiar to me and he's becoming a part of this offense.
