Maybe. It's a cool thing, though, that McNeil seemingly hasn't let the headache of playing out of position undermine the rest of his game. That said, what the Mets really have to do is find a way to get rid of Francesa.

How much are you watching this and telling yourself, "This isn't a sample size; this is what he is"? I keep trying to drink as much calm-down juice as my bladder can take, but I'm having trouble not thinking of the super-.300/limited-extra-base hitters of yesteryear: Carew and Gwynn, Boggs and Ichiro. Yeah, Carew was a super baserunner too, at least the first half of his career. And Gwynn was a very good outfielder and Ichiro a great one. But is a comp of Boggs too ambitious to dream of? If nothing else, he's Daniel Murphy without the early-career injuries and failures in the outfield. Interesting side note: He's not only taken Nimmo's spot in the batting order, he's also taking Nimmo's hit-by-pitch crown, currently leading the league with seven. https://cdn.newsday.com/polopoly_fs/1.29858814.1555380322!/httpImage/image.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_768/image.jpg?w=600>

They got a pair back off Wheeler, but that rally was more about a porous infield defense.

I'm just getting home. Anything cool happen?

I like to think of it as Willie removing his helmet all suave-like, back to front, like Fred Astaire removing a top hat.

I'll give you a hint. His name rhymes with "des beaux." Yeah, it's something. But there's no hiding the fact that I've been in the mother of all slumps. Before that double, I had been 1-for-my-previous-34. That's ugly. That's U-G-L-Y You ain't got no alibi-ugly. When other guys get in a slump, they don't call it a "slump" anymore. They call it a "Tebow." So I've been trying to dial down my goals, and I just achieved one — to somehow make it to my Hey, Nineteen post before getting released. And here I am. So where to go from there? Well, that double is something, right? It knocked off the wall in right, which is cool because most of my power — to the limited extent I've shown power — has been to left. But sitting out half the season, recovering from injury, and getting promoted to AAA where half or more of the pitchers have big league experience has been ... well, this is starting to sound like an alibi. It's my fourth level, and I've been through adversity at pretty much all of them, before more or less figuring it out, though not excelling. The talk about character and stuff may be bupkis, but even though the notions that I have the stuff coming out of my ears are almost certainly exaggerated, if character's good for anything, it's overcoming adversity. And now is, like, peak adversity. Trying to perform with the sword of Damocles dangling over my head, with sports headline writers across America and beyond polishing their game to make hay out of that happenstance if and when it happens — that's not ideal. But I'm the Teeb, and I'm the only Heisman winner in professional baseball right now. I'm going to enjoy the thin-ness of early-season crowds in the International League, and try and turn this around until somebody tells me it's over. And I'll try not jump every time there is a tap on the shoulder, a knock on the door, or a ring of the phone. So how's it gonna turn out? Am I gonna make it through the year? Somehow start working toward a promotion to the Show? If you really think I'm gonna get released, how about putting a date on that? And may a few dollars? For charity. Mock me, curse me, and dismiss me. It all sucks, sure, but at the end of the day, I'm still engaged to Ms. Universe.

I don't know how I've missed it all these years but that riff Dave breaks into before vs. two is pinched shamelessly from "Jumpin' Jack Flash," no?

Chili made my list this morning.

Yeah, that's interesting. All the cities I cite are down there with Syracuse. Good post. Go, Tebow!

Those look like some disaffected Mets, though. Especially in the top row. Although, with Matz, most pictures suggest the same thing.

A whole lot of transactions have been flying back and forth with the Columbia Fireflies, so it's easy to miss one that shines a little brighter than the rest. But the Flies have activated Gerson Molina. It's easy to shrug that one off. We've seen a few Gersons come and go and a couple of Molinas as well. But this GM is a little more unique. A signee out of Cuba, he hasn't played since 2016, so projecting what they've got in him is nearly impossible. But he's tall and athletic and where the track record that couldn't recommend him, the scouts could. Gerson the Person came through in his first game out of the box, ripping a hit to left in his first professional plate appearance. and hustling in for a standup double. He'd finish 2-4 with 3 RBI(!), including one in the ninth during a comeback that the team could not complete. There's obviously a lot of rust there (he got picked off), but that's why they've held him out until now. Bradley Marquez was placed on the injured list to make room for Molina, which basically proves everything: IMMIGRANTS ARE STEALING OUR JOBS!! Molina's debut came at a desperate time. It was the team's third loss in a row and ninth in their last 10, dropping them in DFL in the South Atlantic League Southern Division with and horrific .281 winning percentage. Manager Pedro Lopez has been in the organization a while and skippered some good teams, but this showing after crapping out with Las Vegas last year has got to be a painful wake-up call. St. Lucie needed some pitching, and when voices were tossed around, somebody remembers the 5 2/3-inning start by Dedniel Nuñez back in April when he struck out 10 and walked none. While he's had some pretty good games since then, that one left an imprint on the organization's memory, and got the callup that has left the Flies that much poorer. Good luck, Dedniel. Considering the Fireflies' performance, congratulations are due twice over. Once for the promotion and a second time for the escape. Are you sick of walks? I think we all can say that we are. When relievers come into a situation with the tying or go-ahead runs on and they're afraid to throw a strike. Well, that stinks. But Ezequiel Zabaleta? He ain't that guy. Zeke the Freak comes into games and throws strike after strike. In his first 15 innings, he's struck out 18 and walked but one. He's done this at every level, with strikeout/walk ratios of 8, 9, or 10 to 1. Every level except Kingsport back in 2017, so I'm just going to write that off to crappy Appalachian League umping, and declare EZ's control to be the real thing. He gives up the occasional homer, but isn't a punch in the face better than death by a thousand cuts? Plus he's got a 2.40 ERA after a 1.50 figure across two levels in 2018. There's a good chance you won't have to choose a death all. It gives me no joy to say this, since Columbia started the season with a lot of the Mets' top-ranked prospects, but the offense is still a shitpile. Root like hell for this Gerson Molina guy. As I wrote, he's unknown, but he's older, and he's Cuban, and if anybody is going to lead this offense's turnaround, he's as good a bet as any. He's got one game under his belt and he's one RBI short of ninth on the team. The search for some sort of turnaround continues today as the Flies head to Coastal Carolina to take on the … team there, with Christian James putting his 0-4 / 6.00 record on the line. It's been a bummer. Here's Woody Guthrie.

I liked the film. It was face-palmingly twee at the start, and it almost failed the eight-minute test with me, but it got better.

The thing about Gallo is that he's not as atypical as all that. Rhys Hoskins has had 54% of his hits go for extra bases. Gary Sanchez is at 49%. Adam Dunn was at 55%. Joc Peterson is at 51%. Obviously, Gallo is further along than those guys, who I picked off the top of my head, but it was only a matter of time before a case as extreme as his came along. Someday, folks will forget how cool baseball used to be.

Sure. And Buffalo and Pawtucket have none of those weather problems. Or Toledo or Rochester.

Any guesses? I'm going with "Kuhn." My second guess is "Gammon."

https://secure.milb.com/assets/images/8/2/4/306767824/cuts/960x540/cut.jpg> "What are you looking at, Butthead?" Tommy Wilson has been getting better every start. Question: What do the St. Lucie Mets have in common with the old Dennis the Menace show. The answer of course, is that both of them had two Mr. Wilsons, both of whom are awesome. But six more scoreless innings in the Mets' 5-1 win over Jupiter has put =#FF8000]Tommy squarely in the lead over =#FF8000]Kyle. It was the second win in a row for the Florida Men and seventh of their last 10, settling them in fourth place at 18-13, 3.0 games out in a very tight Florida State League South Division. Securing his presence in the leadoff spot of late has been =#FF8000]Jacob Zanon. Jay-Z, who started the season on the disabled list, has appeared in 13 games so far the Patron Saints of Vision, setting the table to the tune of .295 / .367 / .432 // .799. This is, of course, a dramatic step forward for a low-power/some-speed outfielder who had previously put up a line only nominally suggesting a professional ballplayer at: .223 / .302 / .308 // .610. So his progress bears watching. Coming in strong in long relief has been =#FF8000]Briam Campusano. As misspelled as his name seems, learn to put stars next to it in your scorebook, because Briam has struck out 19 and walked only five in his 21 2/3 innings, and shown the ability to go multiple innings and even start. He's coming off a strong performance in Jupiter where he came into the middle of a tie game and went three scoreless innings, striking out five and yielding two hits and no walks. It's Briam surgery performances like that which have his ERA down to 2.49. Rotation mainstay and lefthander =#FF8000]Kevin Smith is getting more polished, allowing only four runs in his last three starts, covering 16 1/3 innings, Most Kevin Smiths I've met are thick, if not outright fat, but this guy goes 6'5 200, so he's probably got a little more to add to his frame. In his second season, he's walked only 10 while striking out 29 in 29 1/3 innings of work, so watch to see if he starts moving onto the back end of prospect lists. Baseball Prospectus was sour on him this off-season and saw a future of LOOGy work for him at best. Frankly, they were down on him at draft time, too, when he went in the seventh round out of Georgia U. So I think he looked at somebody's girlfriend the wrong way or something. Let's see if they change their tune at all. The book on him last year was that he had a terrific slider but not much heat. Hopefully he'll find an extra foot or two as he adds meat. Maybe he's already found one. The Mets host the Charlotte Stone Crabs this afternoon, and your new favorite pitcher Kevin Smith mounts the hill to defend their honor. That's one hazy-assed background. Did they shoot him in a steam room?

Fred Gwynne voted for it, I think. The word balloon detracts seriously from the ESPN cover, but there are no strong rivals here. Whatever the flaws, ESPN The Magazine generally knows layout.

Edgy MD wrote: I don't think that tickets sold should be a concern at all. And yes, of *course* it does. That's the major reason they signed him in the first place. Well, I was speaking of this notion of fans in other parks. I thought that was clear. As for the home park, a novelty guy with a .125 average gets old real fast. Syracuse is 11th of 14 teams in International League attendance, so I'm guessing central New York is unsurprisingly showing themselves to be not as crazy for the Florida Gators as Daytona Beach. So, if attendance is the goal, quality baseball may be a better draw.

There was Corey Oswalt in Las Vegas. There I was also. There's Corey Oswalt with the New York Mets. And I'm ... um. I don't know if there's some law in the the universe that keeps the number of Coreys in a group to a fixed number, but I aim to be the LAST COREY STANDING! In fact, that should be a reality show. Last Corey Standing on SNY. You take me, Corey Oswalt, Mark Corey, Corey Feldman, Corazon Aquino, and put us on an island or send us to skating camp or something. One way or another, our competitive juices will start flowing. We're Coreys, after all. And this Corey is being jerked around. I just got invited to my third spring training camp. THREE! What kind of work did I get? ONE INNING!! A SCORELESS inning of course, for I am Corey Taylor. I am indeed Corey Taylor and I am currently throwing in Syracuse to the tune of a 1.84 ERA. THIS IS WHAT I DO! I had a sub-2.00 ERA in Brooklyn. I had a sub-2.00 ERA in St. Lucie. I had a sub-2.00 ERA in the 2016 ARIZONA FALL LEAGUE for Pete's sake!! Yeah, it ballooned all the way up to 2.41 last year in Bingo. Boo-fucking-hoo. I strike out three-guys for every guy I walk. I can spot start. I TOTALLY keep the ball in the park (0.3 HR/9! For my CAREER!!). And yet, the call doesn't come. I get it. I'm fat. Obese. Portly. Whatever. They said Ray King was fat too! And then they saw him pitch and they said ... well, they still said he was fat. But he totally showed he could be a part of a big-league bullpen! Mickey's got this idea of a fluid roster where he rotates minor league relievers onto and off of the big league squad alla time. On one hand, I kind of think that's bullshit. On the other hand, I've long since deserved to be in one of those rotations. But I ain't on the roster yet, and that's just the suckiest of circumstances. Will I get onto that 40-man roster? Will I get my call? It's 2019. I'm 26 and I'm raring to go. I'm doing the Mediterranean Diet. What's going to happen? How do I tell the Mets they NEED ANOTHER COREY?! For I am the Corey of Glory, and that ain't no allegory.

I don't think that tickets sold should be a concern at all. But I'd've started him in AA. Promoting him after missing half a season with a serious injury always seemed to married to established schedule. Which would be silly if true. Why would a new regime care about the old regime's schedule? Asking him to put the injury behind him and get adapted to a new level at the same time is more than a lot to take on, and clearly hasn't helped the player or the organization.

Spider-Man: WtF?! would have been a great title.

I think I need to re-adopt Harol!

Fixed. Wrong year.
