Pete earns his fourth blue ribbon from this table, with a fifth — the team RBI record — still in play. Also, he ties George Foster, whose 52 was memorable because it was it was the biggest home run season between Roger Maris and Mark McGwire.

[TH]Home Runs in a Season by a Mets Rookie[/TH][TH]Home Runs in a Season by a Mets Hitter of Any Stripe[/TH][TH]Home Runs in a Season by an MLB Rookie[/TH][TH]Home Runs in a Season by an MLB Hitter of Any Stripe[/TH]

Damn. God bless Hubie Brooks.

Fitty-two. Somewhere Céspedes is wondering if this was maybe the wrong season to miss.

That was a great callup day in 1980 — I think Wally Backman was a day off in getting the callup, but he and Mookie debuted on the second, and Brooks on the fourth. The Mets were still awful, but at least it felt like they were awful with the lights on. Mookie and Hubie instantly became regulars, but the Mets strangely wasted almost three years trying to convince themselves that Brian Giles was their secondbaseman of the future, while Backman fumed, riding the Tidewater shuttle for three seasons.

I agree that a changeup or a splitter would be great. But sure, stay with him. He may have shat the bed, but until you can say, "Yeah, I've got seven better relievers," what is there to talk about? I mean, maybe they get offered a similarly talented catcher or something — young, controllable, and megatalented, coming off a disastrous year, and they can talk about a problem swap but you can't bank on that. But if you're in the trading game, there's always someone out there who you see as fair value. You just have to get the other team to see it that way. For what it's worth, Van Wangenen's most successful trade from last offseason was picking up a https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/d/davisjd01.shtmlplayer who was young, controllable and megatalented coming off a disastrous year (YCaM CoaDY), so somebody in the organization seemingly knows how to scout for that sort.

That said, Woodward's not wrong. Swinging at the first pitch playing catch-up ball in the ninth, from a competitive standpoint, is crazy.

On the other hand, his K/IP numbers were off the chart — third best in all of baseball this year, among folks with at least 30 innings pitched. That certainly suggests the stuff is still all there (which supports my eyeball assessment). But the control and sequence and philosophy and confidence haven't been.

We're in the sixth with a double-one-hitter.

His breaking stuff is getting it done, though.

Yamomoto is missing his targets considerably with his fastball.

Nice to have a runner on third and two out and see Lewis Brindley coming up to the plate. He's pretty much been the worst player in the National League this season. And the Marlins' honors aren't finished, as José Quijada has been the worst pitcher. (Drew Gagnon is tied for second.)

=Centerfield post_id=22987 time=1569506587 user_id=65]Like it would be totally Mets for the record to be held by Butch Huskey or Richard Hidalgo and never have that guy hit more than 20 HRs again. Let's hope that's not the case with Pete.

I'm just going blind, dammit.

So, great. I'm mistaking the flag of Texas for the Puerto Rican flag.

So, is the dog wearing Carlos' Cardinal uniform and the cat the uniform from Carlos' Puerto Rican Winter League team?

My friend Martin was a Yankee fan but just loved the whole comic opera of baseball. He loved Carter because he said that every time he turned on the Mets on SportsChannel, McCarver or Kiner was announcing that "Carter's finally showing signs of coming out of his slump." From his perspective, Carter's slump was a story/non-story for about a year and a half. They always treated like a phase of a few weeks, but it was actually an extended period of his career. The months-long wait for his 300th homer seemed to make all the sense in the world. For other guys, it's, "It's a nice milestone, but I was just trying to make good contact there and get something started to help the team." With Gary, you got the sense he was constantly pressing for it, because it was an important asset to add to his brand. I still like the guy, as ridiculous as he was. Hernandez was a great field captain — really everything you could ask for — but I don't think he was suited to the off-the-field stuff like taking his teammate aside and saying, "Look, you're being a real jackass."

It's odd. He came out of a decade that was full of guys working on their public image really hard (sometimes tastelessly) with an eye toward establishing a legend to build on (and, more cynically, cash in on) throughout. Garvey, Jackson, Rose, Jim Palmer too. To a lesser extent, Seaver and maybe Joe Morgan. In many ways, playing into the nineties, he was the last of that era. By Ken Griffey's dawn, with multiple card companies, ESPN going professional, video games, et al., you could just largely play your game and let your publicist or agent make a legend out of you. Nowadays, in order to create a persona that's bigger than your performance, you have to kill it on Twitter or something. Getting the moms, though, remains a tough row to hoe.

Where Callaway might want to get cute would be in throwing two innings to deGrom on closing day if he falls behind.

I could go either way but it's worth pointing out that Kiara is clearly his coolest child and she got the Mets uniform. https://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--wwaqjzr1--/c_scale,f_auto,fl_progressive,q_80,w_800/tiaof4gc4hkrt4bev91p.jpg> God bless that little goldfish.

Also, we're probably in the clubhouse on this one. I guess it's possible that deGrom could make a cameo in the last game, but likely not enough to change this chart. 1) Tom Seaver (1971): 289 (286.33 IP) 2) Tom Seaver (1970): 283 (290.67) 3) Dwight Gooden (1984): 276 (218.00) 4) Jacob deGrom (2018): 269 (217.00) 5) Dwight Gooden (1985): 268 (276.67) 6) Jacob deGrom (2019): 255 (204.00) 7) Tom Seaver (1973): 251 (290.00) 8) Tom Seaver (1972): 249 (262.00) 9) Tom Seaver (1975): 243 (280.33) 10) David Cone (1991): 241 (232.67)

And the record for homers at home was broken tonight.

Interesting down the stretch. 1) Pete Alonso is within one home run of getting his fourth blue ribbon on this list. 2) A fifth one is not out of the question. And the all-time team RBI record is a big one. 3) Michael Conforto has now entered the Mets top 20 all-time home run seasons. 4) Somehow, when listing all these big seasons, we have a guy from the 1895 Spiders come up.
