Dewds, is everybody holding their breaths too much to comment on this 3-0 lead?

Also, looks like Marty Brenneman is retiring.

It seems I'm seeing increasingly more managers who, when they come out to speak with an ump, keeping their hands in their back pockets. I think I first noted this with Willie Randolph, though I'm sure it predates him with some old longtime manager. Bobby Cox or Dallas Green or somebody. Is this the result of a study that suggested your less likely to be interpreted as antagonistic and get yourself tossed if you keep your hands hid away. Unless you're wearing your warmup jacket, you don't have hip pockets, so you've got to keep your hands in the back feeling your buttocks while trying to flip the ump. Maybe sometimes they just like it. https://media.gettyimages.com/photos/july-2016-former-dodgers-manager-tommy-lasorda-watching-batting-with-picture-id614374928?s=612x612>

HEWJ strikeout of Votto — who was looking very un-Votto-like — on three pitches.

How about that? Anniversary of the ball-off-the-wall play. In waning days of the division race and they have Wayne Garrett playing short and greenhorn rookie Ron Hodges catching.

Most of the league was out of action yesterday, with only 2 1/2 games in the whole circuit, and none of them involving NL East teams. But two of the games certainly were significant, with the Cubs taking another kneecapper from the Cardinals and the Brewers continuing their hot run, sharing the "Hottest Team in the League" designation with the Mets. So while the afterglow of Wednesday night's win still shines on the Mets, the Brewers really found their heartbeat last night, gaining 14.4% in their Wild Card likelihood. And while about half of that gain came at the expense of the Cubs, a small bit came off the Mets numbers too. While the Mets' playoff likelihood still dwarfs Philadelphia's, they remain tied in the loss column, which means they both have the same elimination number, each of which fell by one yesterday as the Brewers rocked on. https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/screen-shot-2019-09-20-at-6.16.32-pm.png> https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/screen-shot-2019-09-20-at-6.17.13-pm.png>

Weird thing about Canó: A lot of Mets frustrate me with their propensity to chase balls breaking outside the strikezone. Still others are confoundingly prone to chasing the low ball. There's even the Rey Ordóñez out there on occasion who likes to waste his swings on balls up above his shoulders. But Canó loves chasing balls in on his hands. If it gets left even a little over the plate, he can rip it, but as long as the pitcher keeps it inside, he either fouls it off or taps it down to the right side. Strangely, he never seems to break it back. I think Joey Votto's got a good season or so left in him. I just think he's been carrying that lineup so long, it can be demoralizing. Age and demoralization mak for a potent cocktail that's hard to drink and then get out there and play. If he gets traded to the Yankees, he'll get on base at a .600 clip while hitting 45 or more homersz.

If the Mets are just playing a single Red, I've GOT to like their chances.

It'll be the Mets first look at Aristides Aquino, who got called up from Louisville on August 1 and instantly went into maniac mode, scattering baseballs all over the National League. He's got 41 RBI in his first 47 games, which has got to be some sort of record — at least, a post-Ted Williams record. He hit ten homers in his first 16 games. Eleven in his first 17. Alonso has probably clinched Rookie of the Year, but this guy is going to get a taste. Cool name, too. Maybe he's half Haitian. Oh, yeah. The Reds non-tendered him this winter and he became a free agent, but everybody slept on it, and he ended up re-signing with the Reds.

Baltimore and the Mets sure seem to do a lot claiming of each other's players. We kind of missed this one, but Eric Hanhold, DFA'd by the Mets so's'n' they could add Donnie Hart, was claimed a few days ago by Baltimore. The month being September and the team being the Orioles, they've added Handsy to the major league roster, but haven't used him yet. https://metsmerizedonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/01/eric-hanhold-e1548347824939.jpg>

And it's a victory for the St. Louisians! Cublicans fall a game out! Time for everybody to become Pittsburgh fans. They've to stop Milwaukee's run. Bobby Wahl needs to remember his fealty to the Mets — and switch up Josh Hater's vitamins or something.

These numbers don't take into account this afternoon's games, among which, only Atlanta beating Pittsburgh was of consequence. Yesterday's win was almost an existential one for the Mets, as it combined with losses by all their Wild Card rivals to boost their WC odds to 6.5%. Yesterday's real winner, however, was Chicago, who, despite their loss, benefited far more from the loss by Milwaukee. https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/screen-shot-2019-09-19-at-6.22.03-pm.png> https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2019/09/screen-shot-2019-09-19-at-6.22.42-pm.png>

I kinda hope they don't.

Not so much suspended as "placed on leave," while the investigation takes place. I usually associate actions like this with relievers. It's rare (to my anecdotal observations) to see starting pitchers getting themselves into this kind of trouble. Good for the Yankees in releasing statements supporting the leave and the investigation, considering they are losing a pitcher with a Conesque 18-4 record on the eve of the playoffs. I guess they more or less had to, but still.

It's certainly supposed to. Whether it's accurately measured is another question, though.

Piazza 2000 is in there at 5.8 fWAR, tied for 16th with José Reyes 2008 and 2011, John Olerud 1999, Keith Hernandez 1985, and David Wright 2005.

That's certainly part of the story, though. Due largely, I'm sure, to the unprecedented offensive environment in which his numbers have been produced, FanGraphs for instance, gives him only enough fWAR to (so far) barely scrape into the top 40 Mets non-pitching seasons ever (with 10 games to play). Now, I don't think fWAR is the be-all-and-end-all bottom line to measure value, but it's still a kick in the ballsack. The numbers leave him looking up at Angel Pagan 2010, for (Piss-Missile) Pete's sake! Strangely, the first 49 in my head isn't Armando, but Kevin Kobel. If compensation was based on what you remember from when you were 12 or 13, I'd have an awful lot of money.

I'm jealous of Carl's full thick head of hair.

Slight adjusments to account for yer man getting one more RBI on the bezes-loaded walk — in a strange way, possibly his biggest RBI of the year. Amazingly, we're in the 57th year of the franchise and he's increased the team rookie RBI record by 52.7%. And there are still 10 games left to play. He has a chance at doubling Darryl Strawberry's rookie homerun record. Doubling! We've also cracked the all-time top 10 in RBIs by a Met batsman in a season

[TH] Home Runs in a Season by a Mets Rookie[/TH][TH]Home Runs in a Season by a Mets Hitter of Any Stripe[/TH][TH] Home Runs in a Season by an MLB Rookie[/TH][TH]Home Runs in a Season by an MLB Hitter of Any Stripe[/TH]

Such a lackluster performance to walk away with the win. A lot of head-up-the-ass play, some not-busting-it play. Nothing was right about that double-play. Canó hit it on the button into a spot that's always been a hit for 100 years, even with the infielders cheating for the double play. But Story doesn't even have to reach for it, because he's positioned perfectly. He's right on top of it. He's been making Gold Glove plays all day, but this one is coming in hot. Maybe it comes up on him a little, because it mostly hits his wrist. But even though he blew the catch, he's Trevor Fucking Story, so he's already rotating toward the secondbaseman coming over to cover, and the ball richochets perfectly with the front plane of his body to the second baseman. He gets to the bag in time. He mostly avoids the slide, but his throw is lousy. The firstbaseman has to leap a foot and a half into the air, but it doesn't matter, because Canó is still in second gear, and is out by 10 feet. That said, trading two outs for that run wasn't such a bad deal. It knocked 2.3% off the Mets win likelihood, but it could've been woise.
