  1. I'm sorry. I meant Vic, not Burt.
  2. Yeah, he left the globe in 1990. He briefly got some publicity a few years ago when his lawyer son was recruited onto Bill Cosby's defense team.
  3. Burt played an old man for a lot of years. He's like the male Ellen Corby. Oddly enough, I just saw Vic Tayback playing a mob heavy on The Patridge Family last night. Vic was on the The Family two or three times, I'm pretty sure, in different roles. He also co-stars with Richard Benjamin in the alternate universe version of The Odd Couple that broadcasts in my head. He doesn't get the red-ass as quickly as Klugman's Oscar Madison does, but he's a lot more menacing once he does. On Batman, apart from continuing in the mob vein and making Vic a sidekick for Louie the Lilac, I think he would make a great pro-wrestling-themed villain called "The Blue Blazer" (or perhaps "Slaughterhouse"). He's putting the best and brightest young men from Gotham University into sleeper holds that no doctor can awaken them from. Only he can bring them back to consciousness with his patented psionic claw maneuver, once the ransom is paid by the parents. The thing is, Batman, being a master of martial arts, sort of knows how to do the psionic claw, but the months of practice that he put into it years ago was abandoned, because he respects patents. And even if he was to violate his conscience and perform one now on one of these slumbering sophomores, any microscopic miscalculation in the pressure used can lead to the patient's demise(!!). The Blue Blazer's main sidekicks include "Half-Nelson" and "Hammerlock." Cliffhanger: Somehow, he is able to bait Batman into a wrestling match. No striking with closed fists — maybe his gauntlets are telemetrically rigged so that whenever he punches somebody, Chief O'Hara gets hit. Or maybe Dick Grayson has become one of the sleepers, so Bats has to play by the rules. So there he is, outside of his comfort zone. No punching, no utility belt, no Robin to assist him, and bare-chested. Just as we head to the commercial break, The Blazer gets him in what looks like the devastating sleeper hold. (I just realized that this almost has to be referred to as "The Golden Sombrero.") CAN BATMAN BREAK OUT BEFORE IT'S NIGHTY NIGHT FOR THE DARK KNIGHT?! IS THIS THE NADIR FOR THE CAPED CRUSADER?!! IS "CRUSADER" EVEN A PARTICULARLY CULTURALLY SENSITIVE NICKNAME TO GIVE TO A HERO IN OUR ENLIGHTENED MODERN WORLD?!!! Vic Tayback, ladies and gentlemen. https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/donbluth/images/e/e6/Vick01.jpg/revision/latest/scale-to-width-down/340?cb=20130412202804>
  4. That's a sweet landscaping setup, man.
  5. I think they've been wearing BB in recent seasons. Wearing the last two digits of the season has been problematic since 2010, so they went to blanks, I think, followed by BBs. It was easier to spot when the Mets had batboys as big as Lucas Duda.
  6. I'm looking at those fake standings and I'm all like, "Wait a minute, Seattle didn't exist for seven years yet." And then I'm all like, "Oh, yeah."
  7. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: I'd fly it but at half-mast If I had a mast, that would be the play.
  8. Every year, on Opening Day, I hang out my banner from Shea Stadium out a window on my house, touting the anachronistic slogan: THE TEAM. THE TIME. THE PLACE. Big block letters. It gets comments from passing neighbors, and then the moment passes. My policy has been to leave it up until the Mets first loss. With the team's tradition of winning on Opening Day, combined with frequent days off early in the season and overall hot starts out of the gate in recent years, I've had some extended displays. Sometimes even the better part of the week. Traditions being what they are, I flew it again on Opening Day this year, though nothing actually opened. I got a few comments from passing neighbors, keeping social distance, and when they asked, I joked that I'd leave it up until the first loss, both of us realizing that while the Mets have a zero in the LOSS column, the whole schedule may indeed be already lost here in Schrödinger's Baseball Season. So what's the move? Do I leave it up, as a reminder of what should be? Or do I take it down, respectfully letting go of what can never be? I'd hate for a look at my house to just be a turn of the knife for quarantine-breaking neighbors.
  9. The first-year Expos were believed to be have the stuff to "sneak ahead of two," but ended up finishing 48 games out. (Terrific year for Rusty Staub, though.) And Pittsburgh and St. Louis don't even get a prediction.
  10. Yeah, he fits nicely into the Garvey category.
  11. Yup, he joins the baseballler-turned-politico family of Walter Johnson, Jim Bunning, Vinegar Bend Mizell, Steve Garvey (sorta), Tim Tebow (pro'ly someday), Frank White, Pamela Frisella, George H.W. Bush, John K. Tener, Ronald Reagan (sorta), Fred Brown (from Roosevelt's cabinet), Happy Chandler, and others. And I'm guessing that no small crew of major and minor leaguers have served in office in Venezuela, The Dominican Republic, and Mexico. Nicaragua, too, probably.
  12. Or shoes, at least. If Marcus snaps off a curve, that could cost you two toes. We didn't get to a 2020 Vision thread for Stro'.
  13. Lefthanded catcher alert.
  14. And the Mets 1986 batboys, but I couldn't find a good picture of them, though I tried. Backman doesn't count, though I suppose I shoulda specified "players" in the question. Jeez are youse picky. Picky, picky picky. Fuck and yes.

  16. "In every country, there is team they make fun of. In U.S., you make fun of Marlins. In Russia, we also make fun of Marlins." "At Roger Dean Stadium during Cardinals game, players dream of being like Derek Jeter. At Roger Dean Stadium during Marlins game, Derek Jeter dreams of being liked."
  17. I'll go with 69, Ted!
  18. I see the logic in the shared-spring-training-facilities setup, but I always rooted for a future where facilities were not increased to serve as a base for two teams, but rather large enough to allow visiting teams to arrive for a three-game series, with housing for the 50 or so guests players and coaches and a couple of fields to work out on between games while they're in town. The team hosting can simultaneously send a squad of minor league players to the facility of the team they are hosting, trading varsity and JV hosting duties like high schools do, thus clearing out fields and barracks for the incomers. The three-game setups would allow for longer bus trips, giving teams exposure to more than just the handful of teams from the local cluster of facilities, and would give fans a greater chance at exposure to more robust representations of a road team when they are traveling.
  19. I'm curious if they will pick a mid-season All-Star Team anyway. They probably will, I would guess, since there's so much marketing and sponsorship tied up in it. I'd come out in favor of them having a post-season All-Star Game, but everything is so day-to-day at this point, planning for November feels beyond silly.
  20. Funny, right? Bad work. My photo of him was in a Las Vegas file and I threw the card together as my wife was calling for me to go out. I uploaded it and then realized the dumbness later. FIXED!
  21. Also, we missed the re-signing of Travis Taijeron. Travis landed just in time for baseball action to end, so he hasn't seen any Spring Training activity. He joins a crowded field of veteran first base/dh types slated for Syracuse, along with Joey Terdoslavich and Matt Adams. He's probably the best outfielder of the bunch, at least having the athletic skills, if not the instincts, for a corner spot. Whichever one might float out there, he'll make it harder for the Mets to keep Tim Tebow at AAA. It's a Coronavirus Crunch! 22. Terrific player. Drew 100 walks six times. In 1969, he hit 33 homers (with the Astrodome as a home park), walked 148 times, stole 23 bases, and scored 113 runs. Somehow, he finished only 15th (a six-way tie for 15th) in the MVP voting. He didn't even make the All-Star team!
  23. Great work. Surprised to see Nimmo still sitting a long throw from the Hot 100.
  24. If you play this season out electronically do you do it from the point that play stopped in the spring, or from Day One? In other words, It's Syndergaard digitally injured also?
