Catching up on some old associates who found a new calling in months past without attracting the notice of Mets Roster Central's third watch, who have all been sent back to remedial training. The Things are a long-time Frontier League franchise with a name inspired by a long-time stupid movie (sorry, but you know this is true). When the Frontier League shut down operations, though, the Thingies joined with three other orphaned teams in something called the "Yinzer Baseball Confederacy," a one-year Brigadoon of a circuit that played all their games out of one park in the Pittsburgh area. I suppose it's about as fringy as professional ball can get, but playing for pay anywhere in 2020 was a triumph. Going to Syracuse in 2019 as the third option at catcher, waiting for a call to be #2 was hardly an undignified assignment when that call was almost certainly (and ultimately was) going to be coming in a matter of weeks. I'd give his agent shit for letting his client walk away with money on the table, but Devin's agent parlayed one All-Star season in 2014 into a terrific amount of money over the course of a contract that worked out terribly for Cincinnati, so he gets a pass.
