  1. Albert Pujols turned 41 a week ago, and has one season left on his contract. He's third all-time in RBI, 114 short of Babe Ruth and 197 short of Aaron. As a DH, he's been pretty much a replacement-level player the last four seasons. Does somebody carry him across the finish line to get the record? The Angels have still been batting him in the middle of the order, and as replaceable has he has been, the RBI still accumulate. Playing with Mike Trout is nice that way.
  2. Yeah, Krane doesn't even know when he's talking out of school. He even found room under the bus for Rogers Hornsby. Kase, are you running the chapter?
  3. Though Bud Selig is a self-made dude from an immigrant Jewish family and and Joan Payson was a blue blooded WASP heiress, it's amazing how their stories as owners unfolded so similarly, with both stepping up when the team they loved left town, fought to get an expansion franchise to replace the lost team, but neither could be satisfied until reacquiring the legendary player who they saw as definitive of the town's baseball legacy, even if they could only get two creaky years out of the guy. * * * So the Braves are going to be renamed "The Hammers" now, right? And they're going to make slight alterations to the tomahawk on the front of the uniform to turn it into a sledge hammer ... right? And because hammers and tomahawks are swung the same way, they can keep their stupid chop, but instead of doing it to old Western movie cues, they can do it to "Hammer to Fall" by Queen. Right?
  4. Six feet tall. One hundred and eighty pounds. Played his first eight seasons on a 154-game schedule. Played the prime of his career in a pitcher-dominant era. STILL the all-time leader in RBI and total bases. They should call runs batted in "Aarons."
  5. Well, if we're admitting mascots themselves, Mister is the man, but if we're inducting mascot performers, then Ted Giannoulas has to be atop any list.
  6. =metsmarathon post_id=54558 time=1611252592 user_id=83]otherwise, i'm fresh out of ideas.
  7. Damn, Gerald.
  8. Am I missing something? It sure looks like the Cubs are being busted up.
  9. I think I'm with duan and ABNS. I think. I like Springer, but the upgrade over Nimmo isn't that great, and with Nimmo three years younger, it's not necessarily the place to lock in. Conforto and Lindor not only need to be tied down soon, but possibly Syndergaard and Stroman, too. I think. The question is how good I can feel about another season or more going forward with Nimmo in center, Smith in left, and defensive replacement coming in to help lock down wins. I confess I may be a little attached. I feel like I raised those guys.
  10. I only have a partial understanding, but the world is changed, and a lot of folks have grown well into adulthood the last 20 years (and more) without any remote notion what courtship looks like.
  11. And José Martinez may have already displaced Mallex on the depth chart. Jackie Bradley Jr. to me sounds like the comic opening the late show for Steve and Edie at the Sahara.
  12. Currently, it's Smiff, Nimmo, Conforto, with Guillermo Heredia and Mallex Smith in reserve. And infielders J.D. Davis and McNeil certainly still available for outfield duty.
  13. Well, he may be easily forgotten, but the Mets already have Guillermo Heredia to be that guy.
  14. "Well, Mr. MD, we've interviewed several fine candidates. But we've all come to agree that one stands head and shoulders above the rest. We'd love you to be the 15th general manager in Mets history." "Mr. Alderson, I'm honored." "We've sent a copy of our terms to your agent KC. I think you'll find the offer to be generous. Why don't the two of you look it over? We just need to cross some T's on our background check." "Cross some T's?" "Just pro-forma stuff. It shouldn't be a problem. I mean, you haven't been sending pictures of your cock to anybody, have you?" "JESUS, God, no! You CERTAINLY won't have anything to worry about there. Hah!" "Yeah, I know, but it's a strange world out there these days. People sending photos of their dicks ... people sending photos of somebody else's dick ... ." "Ummm ... "
  15. Clams go a long way in Stockholm. Was Mr. Slate in part modeled on Phil Silvers?
  16. Definitely not.
  17. Your friends at Mets Roster Central are trying hard to present to you the early members of the Mets class of signees as the international signing period begins. Information is being culled from several lists, none of which has the exact same collection of players, so we beg your patience, as we try to assemble as complete a picture as we can. The Mets don't appear to be going big this year, but instead trying to spread their artificially limited bonus money around. Also, while searching for information on these youngsters, I came across this story, which made me sad. https://metsrostercentral.files.wordpress.com/2021/01/screen-shot-2021-01-20-at-12.07.56-am.png>
  18. Man, the post-Jared era is starting to suck.
  19. Sure, but that's why I describe him as a contact hitter. If you're not a big slugger, 3,000 hits was your next best ticket. But too often, what that is really a test of is whether you can keep your legs healthy the last five years of your career. Also, stay away from the cocaine, kids.
  20. Yeah I was watching before then and the two periods of his career that I recall are the gray-haired period and the white-haired period. I know there was a brown time before that, but he sure lasted a while as an old guy. I tend to think that old-guy hair of his helped lead to the foot-dragging on inducting him.
  21. Keith wasn't elected, to my thinking, simply because he was a contact hitter who didn't get 3,000 hits. It's a crappy reason, but that was the standard of the time, and I suspect a lot of voters didn't look too far past that. Didn't finish with a career .300 batting average either. He sure got my vote.
  22. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Toscano sets his thermostat at 83 degrees, or just coming off a workout. Sherman evidently likes working with his laptop of the carpet, standing above it. Toscano gets younger every press conference. I imagine he was just out skateboarding.
  23. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: Davidoff reporting live from his bathroom, in his undershirt Seriously, come on, Davidoff.
  24. "I have been the head of baseball operations since I was hired and will continue to be so. I'm very happy with the group we have been building."
  25. "We did a routine background check. We didn't do an FBI-level investigation. Should we do that in the future? Maybe. This risk exists with every employee that's hired."
