  1. It's true. When he runs down a ball, he holds on to what he's got.
  2. It's nearly February and the Mets have about 20 major league free agents still on the market. Who do you think goes first — Frazier or Dozier?
  3. Whenever this thread pops up, I keep worrying that something happened to Centerfield the forumite.
  4. Frayed Knot wrote: So he's trying the tactic where he doesn't even give them one final shot at rejecting him next year which will leave any future yea/nay vote to 'real men' who actually know something about baseball, namely those on various veterans committees. I have no idea if that will go any better for him or not. Now and then I wonder who the real men are.
  5. Dear Curt, Please tear up that statement you wrote. You'll thank us tomorrow. The firm has prepared the following. "A lot of people have contacted me following the recent release of the final tallies in the Hall of Fame voting. I just want to say how humbled I am that 71% of the electorate felt my career was worthy of such a singular honor, according to their necessarily high standards. To see my name atop such an esteemed field of candidates, including colleagues and friends, means the world to myself and my family, whether I'm ultimately invited into that special club or not. Either way, my career has been a blessing." "I want to thank my fans for the support they've shown, and especially congratulate Derek Jeter, Larry Walker, Ted Simmons, and the late Marvin Miller, whose legacies in this game will be felt through the ages. I look forward to induction weekend where I will be cheering for those guys as loudly as anybody." If you could bother to show twenty-five cents worth of graciousness, they'd elect you in a minute, and the legacy of your career would continue to enrich your family for decades. Trust us on this. Don't be a numbnuts. Sincerely, Crane, Poole, & Associates Publicists, Public Relations
  6. I just don't get how these guys don't have publicists and agents who say, "Run that shit by me before you do anything." Mentally, I find myself awake at night rephrasing their statements and communiques all the time, trying desperately to mentally walk back their bullshit. It's like I once dreamed of being a big league player, and now I dream of talking for one.
  7. That open letter of his is sure to be a first ballot unanimous selection for The Humblebragging Hall of Fame, so we're not looking at a total loss.
  8. Gots to be the only Met survivor of a mid-career kidnapping.
  9. I don't think I'm a Hall of Famer, but I've chosen Arizona to be the team I represent when I go into the Hall of Fame. What. The. Fuck?
  10. "I'm not a guy to make excuses, or denigrate others, or seek exoneration from people who never played the game. Now here's several dozen sentences of excuses, passive-aggressive blame of others, and mitigation. By the way, I've got Asperger's (?) and my wife has cancer, and while that doesn't ennoble me, let me mention her four more times in the course of this letter just in case it kindasorta does." This is meant to be an honorable, face-saving withdrawal. It's casting blame without actually saying, "You're at fault." It's disingenuously, vaguely admitting trespasses without actually admitting to any actual, specific trespasses. It's a non-apology apology. It's bombast in the cloak of dignity. It's a slick little self-encomium. It's "My Way," only marginally politer. And I don't know about you, friends... but I fucking hate "My Way." And it's "my family and ME," you seditious blowhard, you swollen pink human tumor. "Never try and impress the people you don't know," my father told me. Now here are the awards I've won, whoever you are.
  11. Asked which Met could lift the most in the gym, Pete Alonso said, "The Buffalo can throw some weight around."
  12. Think how much it's shooting yourself in the foot to come in first place among all candidates, just short of the induction threshold, reaching a percentage that has meant eventual induction for everybody who has ever gotten as high, and publicly declaring that (a) you quit, and ( you personally don't think you're a Hall-of-Famer anyhow. That's a guy who makes his agent hit his head against the wall a LOT.
  13. The subtext of a guy trying to brag about "wanting to win" is a self-centered willingness to detach himself from and/or dump any bunch of losers that isn't getting it done at the time. It's making a virtue of front-running. You want the guy who is in the grind with you whether things are going well or not. Similarly, the subtext of demanding "respect in a way that no other team has" is demanding to be indulged in ways other players do not. When a guy says "I want to be able to control where I play and when and the situations I'm in so that as I change too, and things become more important to me, or less important to me as I evolve that I can tailor fit my situation to reflect that," as a reader, I see only three ways to control what he wants to control: 1) Play better. 2) Help your teammates play better. 3) Engineer yourself onto a team in a better position in the standings. It's more honorable to do the first two of these. For a guy to openly state how important it is for him to have the leverage to do the third strikes me as remarkably small. I know no small amount of jocks follow this line of thinking to one extent or another. Maybe we all do. But it's not everybody who is 100% in on the mercenary program and open about it.
  14. It reads as a lot of things, but I wouldn't call tantrum one of them. Sounds like he's kind of leaning into one, but ...
  15. Great, we're talking Trevor Bauer, Josh Hader, and Sean Gilmartin all at once. Is Ambiorix Burgos available?
  16. The Oscars thing is the same discipline, using advanced mathematics to shave away uncertainty. He went up against Nate Silver twice in predicting the Oscars and came out on top both times.
  17. Well, then, I hope the Mets get him. Dead OR alive.
  18. WAIT!! Jon Bon Jovi is in talks with the Mets?!!
  19. Yeah, but ... Nicaraguan! What we need now is a Guatemalan Met. Or maybe a Belizean Met. Do I hear Turks and Caicos?
  20. I absolutely noted that question from Ms. Keyser. It's likely not a question that would have occurred to me, and as good a question as it was, it was remarkable that Sandy flat out said "No," none of the raves he had received regarding Porter came from women. Here's hoping they ask a few women their opinions before bringing in Bauer or Hader.
  21. While the death of old media has made traditional journalism such a poor-paying career, it's been an accidental benefit to see so many beat guys who are of the same generation as the ballplayers they cover. It doesn't make them good writers if they're not, but it does help them see what the older guys might not, as well as make them harder to bullshit.
  22. Described as a "great pitcher" by Luis Rojas when he was called up. It made me wonder why it took so long to call him up if he was indeed great, but he certainly didn't embarrass Rojas in the brief time he got.
  23. Sheesh, bringing in Hader and Bauer in one fell swoop would really be going all-in on Operation Douchebag.
  24. Became the first-ever Nicaraguan Met in 2020. Hopes to become the first ever Nicaraguan Tiger in 2021. https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/fetch/w_2000,h_2000,c_fit/https%3A%2F%2Frisingapple.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2Fgetty-images%2F2018%2F08%2F1273570026.jpeg>
  25. Not noted in this space a week ago was the abcission of Erasmo Ramirez, a guy the 2020 Mets took their time to throw an opportunity to, and ended up regretting it when he pitched terrifically in limited usage.
