Budget constrictions and, frankly, the need for some professional palate cleansing, has led to some turnover at the Mets Roster Central staff, replacing a good number of vets with some fresh faces right out of the top roster schools. But young and old alike on our staff frequently find themselves baffled by the inanities of roster philosophy at the professional level. The Syracuse Mets of AAA East (apparently, the International League is no longer a thing, because fuck you, that's why) are allowed the bloated bloatedness of 28 players on their roster, plus a taxi squad of three more dudes. Given 31 slots, they've elected to fill 25. And the manner with which they've filled them suggests they are expecting a mud-bogged 27-inning marathon, filling the overwhelming number of slots with pitchers, allowing themselves a bench of only three players — a utility infielder and two backup catchers. They have the DH for now (and if Manfred gets his way, forever), so they don't have to pinch-hit for the pitcher, but that means one of those backup catchers has to DH. But it's weird stuff. Manager Chad Kreuter bragged about the versatility of his roster, describing them as a "roster of Swiss army knives," but that's going to be as much a response to necessity as anything if they keep this complexion going forward. (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre had Luke Voit DH-ing and LOLeading off last night.) And yeah, only three outfielders. What the hell? Sebastian Elizalde has been assigned to Binghamton for now, and Johneshwy Fargas, Mallex Smith, and Mason Williams are thus far MIA, so that's four of their five top-credentialed minor league outfielders absent for now. Circles within circles. And yet, somehow they managed to pack their roster with the maximum allowable number of Drews. Syracuse played their first game in 20 months tonight, https://www.milb.com/gameday/railriders-vs-mets/2021/05/04/646372#game_state=final,lock_state=final,game_tab=box,game=646372beating the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (pick a town!) Railriders 5-2, getting six good innings out of last-minute starter Jerad Eickoff, who gave up two runs, striking out five and walking none. After a scoreless seventh by Stephen Nogosek, Drew Smith went the last two innings for the save. Power came in the form of homers by David Thompson and Martin Cervenka, who hopes to be the first Czech-born Met. Speed came in the form of two steals by Drew Ferguson and another by Wilfredo Tovar. I think that equals the big league club's steal totals after a month, but I'm just guessing at that. Tovar and secondbaseman Drew Jackson — a Rule V pick from the Dodgers — combined to turn three double plays, so it was a good win with a little of everything.

Smashie seems like he's having a long weekend.

Firstly, they're both new to the organization, and working on the minor league side, Luis Rojas could scarecely have had time to get to know them. I'm sure he interviewed them both, possibly (probably?) remotely, but this really reads like an upper management hire that Rojas is being expected to roll with. Secondly, in their assignments to date, Howard has been the minor league player coordinator, with Quattlebaum being the minor league hitting coordinator. It's hard to say for sure, but it sounds like, even though they've been promoted, their relationship relative to each other seems to have flip-flopped, with Howie working under Q, when their titles yesterday suggested the opposite. You can't find one pitch of work for SR-F for a week and a half and now, suddenly, one day after using him, you have to send him down, even though he's been nothing but exciting and encouraging? You want to be ready for some horrible game where you need 10 pitchers to survive, even though no games go past 11 innings anymore? And you somehow don't see a need for another hitter? And Yummymoto misses out on his opening day start for Syracuse so he can sit around in the rain, and get neglected for 10 days? You could have put deGrom on the 10-day too. With him out, you lose the best pitcher on the planet and one more hitter too. But if he's out, he's out, and he's going to be missing something close to 10 days anyhow. Ah, what's the use? You've purged Major League Baseball of all its Guamanian-ness. I hope you're happy. Johnny Lunchbucket wrote: 1-run a "0" or better +/- rating on games blown/won by out-strategizing the other manager. 2-Embody the role of being the Mets' manager. Act like that means something! 3-Get on the good side of the press while doing both things above I probably have a similar but different list, but I would conclude he's behind the curve on all three. I mean, #2 is a special challenge arriving in 2020, because it's hard to be the face of the franchise when you have no face. With regard to #3, it's not like he's on the wrong side of the corps at this juncture, but he owes that less to his press performance and more to (a) being young, ( coming from a legendary family of baseball lifers, © coming on board on such shitty circumstances. The circumstances with the press and he being connected mostly digitally so far is probably a wash. It hasn't helped him get on the good side or the bad side. Anybody who wants to be an just be an elusive enigma, the time has been ripe for it.

Three threads, Luis. Yeeez.

Where's the thread? I thought Alvaro Espinosa did OK. Or are we talking about Carlos Baerga?

=Ceetar post_id=62986 time=1620146094 user_id=102] quotes from his hiring. I haven't found one since. “For me, trying to hit the ball in the air doesn't work,” Davis told The Athletic in his first spring training with the Mets in 2019. “With the way pitchers are pitching you these days or changing the way they pitch you, that might work for a while, but what happens when it stops working? To me, a line drive is always the objective of a swing — trying to hit the ball hard, trying to square the ball up with a line drive. You allow yourself for misses.

Is there any source for believing Chili's approach was to avoid fly balls?

We didn't have a thread title nearly as good when Chris Chambliss replaced Dave Engle.

I do too, but even if I didn't, it's suicidal to ignore half the field in an age of extreme shifts leaving the opposite field so utterly undefended. Its really maddening to hear Gary Cohen, late in a game, say something along the lines of "And now Dominic Smith is coming up — he's 0-for-3 tonight but he's hit the ball hard twice tonight, but gotten robbed by the shift." That's not the goal. And being successfully defended against with an open and obvious alignment change that you didn't adjust to isn't being robbed. It's poor planning and a just outcome.

Good takes everybody. Funny that, when an executive goes, it's always the best or the worst news for his or her surrogate. Either you're getting the big job, or you're out with them. Tough break for Slater. The most popular lookup in the UMDB this last week was Jack DiLauro. As usually happens in such circumstances, I feared for the life of the Miracle Met and googled him, but it appears the name jumped to the forefront because a kid with the same handle playing for Holy Cross won pitcher of the week for the Patriot League. I can't find any relation link, but part of me thinks there must be one.

Man, I'm gonna miss Robert Alomar. As long as his name was up there, I could live in the illusion that this unsavory business had nothing to do with the similarly-monikered-but-in-no-way-related Roberto Alomar.

Oh, they're real. The harder part for the Mets will be finding a Q for the back of Quattlebaum's uniform. They may have to dig up an old Omar Quintanilla uni.

Thoughts on the Firing: 1. Chili is a respected and well-liked baseball figure, who has gotten some plum jobs working with outstanding young hitters in well-resourced organizations, but he sure seems to leave his assignments on cloudy terms. 2. Best Jamaican coach in Mets history. 3. Best savory coach in Mets history, as opposed to Cookie Rojas, who was the best sweet coach in Mets history. 4. Apparently cutting a guy loose after midnight isn't really such dirty play at all. Just don't do it on the west coast. 5. I conflate Kevin Howard with Kevin Morgan, who left the organization after a million years around the time Kevin Howard was coming in. Howard going from farm director to batting coach seems like a weird lateral move, but he was the hitting director in the Cleveland organization. I know this because I just looked him up, because I conflate him with Kevin Morgan. 6. I agree that the Mets offensive philosophy was bolluxed, but I can't remember the last time I didn't think that. 7. I'm only half buying the thesis that the "Diesel Donnie" phenomenon in some way precipitated or even triggered this. I can see connections, but I'm missing a lot of the dots. 8. Sometimes a solid team-wide "approach" is not so much a product of a coach so much as having a veteran everyday guy in your lineup, over 30 who has been in the league for 10 years and knows the pitchers. Maybe he isn't the best hitter in the lineup, but the others learn how to think ahead, get the edge, and execute situationally by watching him. Maybe the Mets need a Bartolo Colón of hitters. I'm not saying they should replace J.D. Davis with Pablo Sandoval, but yes, maybe that's exactly what I'm saying. And maybe that's not the worst idea, but I have to say, re-reading it, it sounds like it's pretty close to the worst idea. 9. I fret that turnover trauma will delay the process by which this offense will become the machine it needs to be. I fear change and I fear lack of change. 10. It'd be a shame if Rojas really has the talent to do this job, but the Carlos Beltran situation just ended up launching his career too soon. But he's got to be on the hot seat now. Bonus: Just go out and score 16 runs for deGrom tonight and make the Mets look like geniuses.

Dammit, Donnie, you're out of your depth.

Runners will be in motion.

I'm tempted to pinch-run Nimitz for Pete. Pete with restraint is a lovely thing.

Well, that happened.

And with the pitcher wild, Confo swings at junk out of the zone.

Come on. Operation Popup was supposed to be called off.

Slap another one, McNutty.

=LWFS post_id=62920 time=1620095683 user_id=84] Do you really PH Almora and not leave him in for defense? That's like the worst of both worlds, innit?
