You can't blame Peterson. I mean, it's Pat Valaika.

That's certainly touched on. The filmmaker is supposed to meet his subject in San Francisco, and Paul is a no-show. He has a film crew assembled, and Paul's in town for a show, so he walks around the neighborhood asking folks about him, and they generally have no clue until he starts humming a few bars of "Rainbow Connection," and almost invariably, they practically know the whole lyric to the song, with some claiming to own the record. Who else gets honorary Muppet status? John Denver certainly. Maybe Rita Moreno? Eddie Van Halen never worked with the Muppets, but he always seemed like one. http://hensonblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/williamstrio.jpg>

I certainly heard Gelbs report that Hefner thinks his curve is terrific. But he's thrown two of them all season (at least, as far as I've seen). They've both been beautiful, but I hesitate to think it's widely considered anything.

"THANKYOUVERYMUCH! THIS IS OUR NEW SONG CALLED 'HIGHWAY 61 PATROLMAN REVISITED'! A ONE! A TWO! ..."

What made it interesting was that movie was very much about the filmmaker being unsure what kind of film he wanted to make. Williams seems to waver several times on whether he trusts the guy, but is never that comfortable rehashing his life. As a remarkably short guy who got to become famous, his stage persona was to come across absurdly as being the swingingest dude in the room, and nobody could take him down for being short and pudgy because he'd be the first in line to make fun of himself. But clearly that guy was masking a world of pain. A good interviewer/documentarian would know how to explore that, but documentary isn't this guy's forte, and so he backs off when Williams pushes back, as he's sort of insecurely covering up his own shortcomings as well. As a recovering addict and counselor, Williams realizes that it's part of recovery to dig through the mistakes of your life, but he's mortified discussing on a camera what a jackass he became, and doubly mortified that there is all this footage out there on TV, where booze and drugs have turned his cornball act of the early and mid-seventies into kind of a jackass act of the late seventies, and later into an asshole act in the eighties. The slippage was subtle in real time but it's jarring to see it compressed. And it's more jarring for Williams than anybody. The storyteller becomes half the story, which is typically a no-no in a documentary, but meaningful here. Weird and surprising. Unprofessional but worthwhile.

It really is a sink-or-swim start for Peterson, isn't it? And Baltimore is a hot lineup to be facing. Their pitching ... not so much.

Looking back, the real question may be how Jerry Manuel survived that September.

Is Villar as dark a horse to come in as PotM as ever? Who else are candidates? Francouer ... Buck ... Byrd? At least those guys were expected to be regulars. I'm still having trouble accepting that I live in a world where Tim Redding was Pitcher of the Month.

Three hitters who opened the season as reserves have won PotW

Dave Mlicki's birthday.

Veteran Queens-born commercial director with some hints of larger success (two features) is surprised to get a chance to take in a Paul Williams gig in Winnipeg. Raised on 1970s TV, he's fascinated in trying to reconcile this hugely successful songwriter (his constant theme: loneliness) with the ubiquitous TV ham he turned into, and then with the ghost he ultimately became, and he starts hanging out with Williams trying to document his life. https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71QR-eIAYhL._SY445_.jpg>

Brooklyn is the team to watch right now for Mets fans. The only winning affiliate at current has been St. Lucie, but the Cyclones are currently making space in their locker room for three of the team's top prospects — Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio. Yeah, those guys are all on the offensive side of the ball — between a rash of injuries to their starting pitchers and donations to replace injured players up the system (and donation to replace guys who are replacing injured players), the rotation is all bolluxed up, and on most days, tomorrow's starter has been listed as TBD. So, while the talent sparkles, the record does not. Still, dig on that offense and watch a few balls fly. There are worse ways to spend an early evening. Losing four of six to the Jersey Shore Jackals — including the last three — is no way to spend your week. But that's just what happened, dropping your Brooklyn Cyclones to wet blanket of a 2-8 record over their lat 10, but now the real test comes, as they host the first place (and Cal Ripken-owned) Aberdeen IronBirds for their next six. While they sit in fifth and last in the High A East's Northern Division, it's a good time for a reset after a rainout yesterday. Brett Austin Baty, the first rounder that Brodie Van Wangenen didn't get around to trading away, has clearly been the most dangerous bat to date. After a homerless (but otherwise devastating) May, Brett the Met (note: actual t-ball nickname) has homered four times this past week to set his percentages at a majestic .369 / .476 / .595 // 1.071. It's like Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, and Michael Conforto all participated in some unGodly act and produced some horrible, monstrous, third-base playing baby. (Note the implication here — he's a lefty hitter.) They probably didn't do that, though. [FIMG=350]https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61G3ROESAEL._AC_SL1135_.jpg[/FIMG] Josh Walker recently promoted to Bingo has provided the closest thing to a dose of steadiness the rotation has seen, going 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA before his callup. Josh was a late draft pick back in 2017, and has been the most pleasant of surprises this season. Get to the park and see Baty while you can, for it is too late to see Walker. Like Ziggy Stardust, he brings it left hand. If you were hoping to see him in Brooklyn, he made it too far. [FIMG=450]https://brooklynreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/Cyclones-2021-Wk-2-vs-HV-Josh-Walker-1-scaled.jpg[/FIMG] The bullpen has been a much more solid unit, despite their overuse. Bryce Montes de Oca has put up a mountainous 15 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings to go with a molehillian 1.59 ERA. Yeah, he's wallked nine, but he's been living well despite that so far. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Dfv026dV4AA-muF.jpg> That photo doesn't really capture the scale, but part of Bryce's philosophy is to be really, really big — and the 6'7", 270 point Missouri product has really succeeded on that score. And as you can see from the photo, it's a proportional massiveness. Get out to the beach to see the Clones now. You'll be paying through the ass to see them at Citi before you know it. I mean, your declaration is far more conclusive than my own, right?

Well, he homered to put Syracuse ahead in his first plate appearance with the organization, so you may well get your wish.

I'd have advised him to stick around and see what sort of attrition might give him a chance to step up. But that advice wouldn't have panned out, as counterintuitively, the Mets' injury bug has bitten everywhere but at catcher. You may remember Austin as the return in the deal that sent Jason Vargas to the Phils, after Vargas signed his ticket out of town with his stupid participation in playing the heavy for Mickey Callaway in our manager's war with the press. He also gained some notoriety after that trade when it was discovered that he was a teammate of Bradley Wilpon (Jeff's son) at Penn, leading to rumors that his acquisition was a little more of the old nepotizz. So, in a sense, while his retirement was quiet, it kind of brings two louder chapters to an end. He actually tended to improve as he climbed the ladder, and was close to a callup in 2019, but badly time injuries and a long COVID layoff conspired against him and he judged himself to have run out of time.
