He had previously started but relieved this season. He's a solid 6'2", 203. He arrives in a few days so he hasn't been assigned to a team yet. I imagine he'll work out down in St. Lucie and get an assignment once the short season leagues start.

I'm not sure what precipitation New York is expecting this evening, but we've had two days of torrentials in Baltimore.

We're clearly talking about two different things. Changes to the composition of the ball and cracking down on the use of Spider Tack are separate issues being conflated. Trevor Bauer did not gain his contract through changes of the composition of the ball.

Well, that's not what's allegedly going to happen. The league is supposedly cracking down on the use, which is what got us here.

Well, the Mets pulled within 9-5 before giving up another five in the fifth, with Liam McCall taking the second barrage. But after that, Brendan Hardy came on and shut down the Cards like the last-place squad they are. The Mets again closed the score to 14-8, but no further. With two on and two out in the ninth, new recruit Jimmy Titus went first-pitch swinging, which is just insane, and he popped out to end it. Such disappointments have been few for St. Lucie, who had won three straight going into the game, but before that, they had taken five L's in a row at the hands of the Fort Myers Mighty Muscles. (I didn't name them, Ben.) So yeah, hooray for our boys, first place in the Low A Southeast League's East Division, but for now, it's just a two game lead on the Jupiter Hammerheads (This is also a name I would not have chosen.) With big shot prospectos Pete Crow-Armstrong (hurt) and Francisco Alvarez (promoted) out of the picture, the best offense has come from a surprising source in José Peroza. As far as brand-name prospects, José is certainly an under-the-radar comer, but he must be inspired by the José Peraza on the big club his seemingly pedestrian .262 batting average through 26 games has been augmented by 21 walks and 6 (six!) hits-by-pitch bumping his on-base-percentage all the way up to .455. José knows that fuckos aren't throwing strikes and the key to flourishing in this crazy era is to stop helping out by swinging at shit. He's with his walks and his plunks, he's going to black-and-blue his way to the big leagues. In a sense, his name is only one letter away. He's also second on the team with 18 RBI. Coming on strong of late in the rotation has been J.T.Ginn. Jaty started the season late due to injury, and was held to three innings in his first start and four in his second, but a sole solo homer has been the only nick in his 1.29 ERA, so they're about to bust him loose. He's gonna bust out. ... Something is going to happen that has something to do with a bust. That's all I can say. The rotation has been augmented by a deep and talented pen, and none have stepped up more than Matt Cleveland. The Cleve has appeared five games to date, totaling 7 1/3 innings, and his ERA is still unblemished. The former top New England schoolboy hurler has struck out nine in that time. Having been in the system since 2016, Matt's performance to date this season may finally be the step forward he needs to justify his decision to forego college after the Mets picked him in that year's 12th round. Cle's family comes from the Bronx, and he seems to have grown up a Yankee fan. That may be what has held him back to date, but right now, he's pitching like a Mets man all the way. Lucie just gave up a nine-spot to the lowly Palm Beach Cardinals in the first. Austin Faith — which is the name of a Mets pitcher and not a coalition of capital-area Texas congregations — yielded seven, six of them earned, before exiting without recording an out.

I dinna want to jump to conclusions, but if there be a gun to my head, I'd say that Pete is trying to cover the ass of some teammates.

Maybe the higher the spin rate, the harder it is to control that pitch. I'm kind of thinking the same, which is completely counter to Alonso's logic.

The deeper the Mets Roster Central team gets, the more cleaning up from past months they find they've got to catch up on. Fortunately, they've gone pretty deep. He tore it up two years ago for Cleveland in the Arizona League, to the tune of a 1.179 OPS but he's with St. Lucie right now, and he's producing at half that rate, which is pretty much close to nothing at all. He catches baserunners at a good rate mostly. The team also has a Robert Colina, a pitcher, in the system, and I suspected that the team was out to reunite a family battery, but it looks like he's from a different part of Venezuela, and he's currently hurt. Without copious data on the subject, I hesitate to conclude that this goo is giving people both more spin on the ball and more control of where their pitch is going. Are walks/wild pitches/hit batsmen all down from 25 years ago?

My visual reference for him so far has been Joe Orsulak, I think. I don't want to damn him by comparing him to an over-exposed 1994 Met, but neither do I want to damn him by overexposing him. It's all hands on deck, of course over the short term, but over the middle term, I think he and Williams could make a viable platoon together. I hope they can, anyhow.

Well put. It's really interesting when you think about how desperate their promotion of him was. They needed help at every position but catcher, but he was the only batsman left who didn't require them to remove somebody else from the roster.

Personally, I prefer Carl Everett's theories about dinosaurs. Funny memory: Years ago when we had season tickets our box mates for a year or two were Manhattan attorneys who just happened to represent Carl with his off-field issues. I couldn't get any juice out of them other than, "let's just say Mr. Everett's elevator doesn't stop at all the floors." I always thought you had a little more inside info on Carl than the average bear.

I guess you've got to root for the Phils in that situation, as the team further back in the standings. Not sure which team is the bigger threat over the long haul though, especially with Ozuna seemingly shelved indefinitely. Maybe that's another question for a dumb poll.

I got the year right, and it was a two-game spit, but it wasn't quite the dramatic flip-flop this series was. The Mets https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL201808140.shtmllost 6-3 in game one, and then https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/BAL/BAL201808150.shtmlturned it around for a 16-5 victory in game two. Jonathan Villar and Miguel Castro were bad guys back then.

I feel like about three years ago, the Mets came into Baltimore, got destroyed in one game, and then did the destroying in the next game.

Several Mets who you never expected came aboard in the last month. They come with high numbers and mixed backgrounds, and joined the team from outside the organization. The best performer among them is the best performer among them. In fact, as I type this, Billy McKinney just hit his second homerun of the game. But who is the guy who most bonded. Who is the one who most clearly became "Oh, yeah, he's a Met"?

You should have taken off your shoes and kicked them in their faces like Billy Jack.
