Angels play 4 against the Rangers who are in first by 3. The Astros are only .5 up for that second wild card. They have 3 left against old-foe Diamondbacks. The Angels against the Rangers probably means that the Yankees only need to win a couple to clinch, but lots of moving parts. The Yanx magic number is 2, not 4, at least as far as just making the post-season goes. The MN is just 1 on the Twins who already can do no better than tie them. And 2 wins means neither the Astros nor Angels can catch them and if the Angels do catch them it means the Rangers fall back.
  2. Not to take the pitching staff off the hook for last night, but getting ZERO hits after the 4th inning didn't help matters much. And the 4th inning hit was Wilmer's little roller through the box which plinked off 2nd base. Three guys could have fielded it but none did. That hit was like one of those fishes that you have to throw back because it doesn't meet the minimum standards.

  4. This game (3:59) just missed becoming the sixth 9-inning game of four hours or longer this season - and I strongly suspect it would have been the only one with just 14 hits combined. Hmmmm, let's check on that. - Aug 29 (4:16): Seattle 7 - ChiSox 6; 24 hits total - July 6 (4:13): Dodgers 10 - Phillies 7; 26 hits - July 5 (4:01): Red Sox 5 - Astros 4; 19 hits -- this one was just 9 runs combined and 8-1/2 innings long .. WTF were they doing!?!?! - April 28 (4:01) Blue Jays 11 - Red Sox 8; 30 hits - April 11 (4:16) Tigers 9 - Indians 6; 22 hits

But that's the part I'm calling a fluke -- or at least something more towards the fluke-ish-y end of the spectrum. That the last 15 championships (actually 14 + this coming one which has yet to be decided) have been won by only 9 different franchises [due to the Giants x 3, BoSox x 3, and StL x 2] and yet have done so without a back-to-back winner is more fluke than it is an example of how MLB is in the midst of a never seen era of parity. Having said all that, I do happen to think that MLB IS in an era where there's more of what folks like to call parity as compared to most eras in its history, I just don't think the statistical oddity of 'setting a record' for the longest time with no b-t-b winners is proof of it even though it's sure to be cited as just that in some quarters.
  6. Small consolations after such an ugly affair, but ... 1) the Dodgers are down 3-0 after 3 in SF 2) the Yanx just gave up 4 (and counting) to the BoSox in the top of the 11th
  7. I predict we'll take the lead back in the 8th ... unfortunately that'll be long past my bed time.
  8. Worst. Game. Ever.
  9. X-Rays of Cespedes's left hand are negative. Does that mean he doesn't have a left hand?
  10. This game may last until noon tomorrow, at which point they could just turn it into a single-admission DH 2 hours 20 min to play 5 innings.
  11. They're playing while it's misty in Philadelphia. [youtube:qiz8ooob]mGPtFmAaakU[/youtube:qiz8ooob]
  12. NL Central still (technically) up for grabs as Pitt also won this afternoon Minnesota, also rained out last night and playing a DH today, won the first game to keep themselves still alive. That Tanaka served up a 3R HR in top 1st in da Bronx is good news for the Twinkies as well. And of course there's still the big mess in the AL West to sort out. We may be looking at a Monday play-in game in the AL
  13. This is one of those inning where you make the joke about them needing to drag the warning track between innings instead of the base paths. I had never heard of this pitcher prior to today. I have a suspicion that we may not hear of him ever again after that performance.
  14. The Thursday finale in Philly has been moved up to a 12:05 start in anticipation of rain moving in later in the day. Obviously there'd be no way to make up that game should it be canceled.
  15. Duda - 3.5 CTorres - 0.5 Conforto - 0.5 Tejada - 0.5
  16. Matz. Stupid auto-correct.
  17. Besides, if this gal/guy does play the organ, who knows what type of organ s/he prefers. Yes, I went there
  18. Matz now will not pitch on Thursday either. Well take a look at him tomorrow, and if he feels much better, well try to get him a game and this weekend, sez Terry.
  19. Cespedes. Just your typical blond-haired, freckle-faced Cuban.
  20. I forgot to MM-bop our NHOP this morning. Needless to say it wasn't a good night last night for NHOP-ping. On the other hand the Dodgers are still in the position where they have to virtually run the table unless we finish up with a 1-4 or 0-5 kind of deal. 21. This has turned into a 2-man race between Greinke & Arrieta with our boy falling off the back-end somewhere although he could see some 4th or 5th place votes on a couple of ballots. 23. When Matt Williams benched Harper (in early 2014) it was for a similar and ultimately meaningless non-hustle play. That one didn't result in a fight so it was only a minor story at the time, but it was a come-backer where Usain Bolt would have been out by 35 feet. What got Harper in trouble was that he had the same sort of bad body language which made his jog look a lot worse than it was. Williams seemed to jump on the opportunity to try and score hisself some tough guy points by sitting dow the star just weeks into his tenure over an incident which, like this recent one, didn't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. But it's ABs like that one and the Papelbon one that get Harper this rep that he really only barely deserves. If anything he probably spends more time over-hustling.
