This. Last guy I remember getting called on it was Michael Pineda and even then only because he had half the La Brea tar pits on his neck. Hitters don't even object to it unless completely over the top because it helps pitchers maintain control of the rockets they're throwing, particularly on cold days.

  3. Of all the things I expected from this series, a complete game, 2-hit shutout by Johnny Cueto wasn't one of them.
  4. We were just pretty much non-existent in this game. I go back to the 4th inning with the defense; two plays not made -- Duda at 1st and Lagares coming in on the low liner -- forced deGrom into a lengthy inning that seemed to take its toll in inning #5, and then it only got worse from there: no hitting, no fielding, not much pitching. I do think the Royals are getting a bit lucky in that nothing they hit wound up at anyone - but that only made the gap bigger, it certainly wouldn't have changed the result.
  5. I heard about this yesterday but couldn't find enough interest in it to post - mainly because I don't believe a word of it. This is all in advance of an upcoming book apparently - which nobody would know about if he didn't throw in something that's both wild and likely unprovable.
  6. Scorers generally don't give out errors when OFers have trucked a long way just to get to a batted ball. So a four-base error would have to be one where the fielder either wasn't moving at the time or was in cruise control to the point where the catch would be considered ordinary - and then he'd have to somehow botch it into a round-tripper. I suspect it's happened at some point but back-handed grabs on the warning track after long runs where the ball, two fielders, and the wall are coming together aren't going to fit most definitions of an error. Canseco too was leaping while still chasing a ball over his head (until it was ON his head) at the warning track.

I thought you were going to ask when was the last time SI had a baseball cover that wasn't the obligatory 'Preview' issue. I was going to guess early '90s. You mean who was the last Mets position player to make the cover of SI (not a group shot) -- on a regular issue as opposed to a WS Preview? No, I'm merely being a cynical wise-ass by implying that the last time SI had a baseball cover other than their yearly 'obligation' issue was at least 20 years ago.

  9. Had our chances - couldn't cash them in. Had the game on our racket with the closer in - and couldn't close it out.
  10. More leadoff guys on, and for the most part we're not even making them get the balls out of the infield.

Cuz when there's a guy on the mound with a chicken and a man at the plate with a herring it really loses something.
  16. Right move (the IW). Especially when you've got a pitcher out there who doesn't walk guys.
  17. That's the one spot where the ball off the base thing actually hurts the defensive club.
  18. Our only hit w/RiSP was that infield single that Moustakas failed to glove. We've had numerous chances before and since and had we cashed in on ONE of them this game would be in the books already.
  19. You paid for the entire seat but you're only using the edge.

  23. The walk (hopefully) isn't the worst thing in the world there, but coming after he started off 0-2 was.
