  2. I'm 80% certain you made up the name Kendall Graveman. I had never heard of the dude before seeing him announced as the Oakland OD starter about two days ago. Seeing it though kind of makes one feel good thinking about -- Matt Harvey: Third Starter
  3. Centerfield wrote: Are we still trying to win without scoring runs? They were for a while. Bruce failed to go 1st to 3rd on a single when I thought he could have and subsequently wasn't in position to score on the ensuing long fly out. And there were several inning-ending GiDPs which killed rallies despite lots of hits. In short, they had the lots of singles and no clutch hits thing going.
  4. Now how in the heck did THAT happen? ... 5. Opening Day starter list coming together. Others, Dodgers & Giants for instance, seem obvious but are either not yet official or I just haven't seen them called anywhere. 6. NYDN: Steven Matz has been scratched from his scheduled Monday start with "tenderness" and "irritation" in his surgically repaired left elbow. The piece goes on to add that doctors insist this is NOT an issue with his UCL but that they'd "know more in the next two or three days" http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-lefty-steven-matz-scratched-start-elbow-irritation-article-1.3009637
  7. Lagares missing any time would certainly cement an OD roster spot for Conforto as well. As much as he's earned a spot this spring regardless of what everyone else is doing -- he hit a LONG HR off RA Dickey (whose beard is starting to go gray) today and had at least one other hit -- he'd be neither the starter nor the logical late inning replacement with the current crew as is so there is some logic to him starting the year in Vegas. I'd prefer a more versatile type off the bench (Kelly, TJ Rivera, etc.) than say Taijeron if neither Nimmo nor Lagares can answer the bell. Four full-time capable OFs plus those two (plus Reyes?) should be fine. Lagares is insisting this one isn't serious -- not nearly as bad as when he did the right side oblique last year he says -- but of course that's what they always say. Terry is saying we'll see how he is tomorrow. Sewald pitched a tidy 9th in his bid to be last man in the pen although Edgin did likewise in the 8th.
  8. Apparently from running out a grounder in today's game. Was pulled after 3 innings, no word yet on how severe/not. He had previously lead off the game with a triple and later scored. (3-0 Mets @ Braves in 7th) When I was growing up, ballplayers didn't even have obliques. I liked those days better.
  9. LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr wrote: Edgy MD wrote: I figure Smoker is competing with Edgin, but yeah, there could be room for both if Familia gets a vacation. By all informed guesses, Smoker's in. It's Edgin vs. Montero vs. field for that last spot, it seems. One article today suggested that Sewald is in the final mix. It might only be for the period that they're minus Familia but that gives him a couple of weeks maybe and you never know what'll happen in that time. Time enough to make a helluva n'impression as they used to say.
  10. So that's two games in two days with no runs combined on a total of 9 hits, most of them singles, and pretty much with full-strength lineups in (although the starters didn't necessarily go all nine). Among other things they loaded the bases with none out in the 8th today but didn't score. Yup, sounds like mid-season form to me.
  11. Thor's given up two singles thru 4 ... Yay!! Mets have three singles thru 4 (to go with their only three or four yesterday) ... Boo!!
  12. A wealthy forty-something art gallery owner in a loveless marriage to a good-looking though vapid business man (Armie Hammer, ladies and gentlemen, in the role he was born to play!!) gets thrown for a loop when, despite little contact for almost two decades, her former husband sends her his manuscript for a novel complete with a dedication to her. The movie within a movie proceeds as it switches between the present, flashbacks of her first marriage to this future writer, and the plot of the novel itself come alive as she reads and is obviously affected by it. Is this book an homage to her? an attempt at rapprochement? a threat? revenge? Amy Adams is the art dealer. Jake Gyllenhall as both the first husband and the protagonist in his own story. Also Michael Shannon, Laura Linney, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the aforementioned Armie Hammer. This one is a bit of a tough watch and I suspect opinions of it will swing towards both extremes to a greater degree than for most movies.
  13. Frayed Knot wrote: the positional value [of Amed Rosario] -- most descriptions of short-stop prospects carry the "if he can remain at SS" disclaimer with them, and most don't. Of Rosario, much like Reyes a decade or so back, there seems to be no doubt that he will. Short BP article on how often top SS prospects remain at SS.
  14. Biggest problem this guy's got ... he's a REALLY BAD outfielder.
  15. Not sure if he's got a ML career in front of him, but he's a much better bet than is his cousin Loser Stuart.
  16. How is Hawaii a state but not Puerto Rico? Among other reasons is that Puerto Rico doesn't want to become a state. They've had the occasional (non-binding) vote on the issue before where voters are offered three choices: 1) statehood; 2) complete independence; 3) staying with the current Commonwealth status Status quo tends to prevail in those polls.

  18. Edgy MD wrote: Adrian Gonzalez joins players spitting on the WBC. It's amazing that the organizers can get so much so wrong. Gonzalez is mad about Mexico losing out on the tie-breaker procedure but I don't know that the suits that run this thing got anything wrong in this case. Short tourneys like this with tight schedules (or, hell, like the entire NFL season) are going to need some sort of tie-breaker resolutions. So while Mexico might not like coming out on the short end of one of them, the rules governing how it would work were spelled out ahead of time. And I'm going out on a limb here by guessing that I don't think AG would be complaining if Mexico wound up benefitting from the same rule.
  19. metirish wrote: Something I learned from Matt, spin rates don't necessarily translate into wins And also that Marcus Stroman's hometown of Medford is in "upstate" New York. He corrected himself a few innings later and placed the town back on Long Island where it belongs.
  20. 15-9 actually. Looks like the only pitcher who didn't get hammered today was Blevins and he faced just one hitter. But Matz (5 ER over 4 IP), Familia (3 R, 1 ER, 2/3 IP), Wheeler (4 ER / 4), and Salas (3 ER / 1) ... not so good. But that's what happens when you face a lineup with Stanton & Yelich in it. Oh wait a minute ... they're both in LA still.
  21. Yeah, I don't believe he's coming up this year either, except maybe for a cuppa in September. If Duda goes down (or really suxx for some reason) then it's a combo of Bruce & Wilmer playing 1st with anyone from TJ Rivera, Walker, or hell maybe even Wright filling in beyond that. Smith made a lot of progress in 2016, enough to justify the high draft slot and get him onto the middle/upper range of this winter's top-100 lists. But now he needs to build on that if he even wants to reach the majors much less hold down a steady job if and when he gets there.
  22. The Greenville (S.C.) Drive, the Red Sox affiliate in the South Atlantic Lg, announce a promotion where fans get a free BK Whopper if Tebow strikes out three times over the length his first series in Greenville.
  23. Not that I think there was any chance of him winning a job to start the season, he hasn't helped himself with a bad spring: 5 singles and a double in 34 ABs with lots of strikeouts.
  24. And/or Smoker, especially with Familia's status still uncertain.
  25. One inning for the right to go to the final vs PR. And Jackie Stewart doesn't drink and drive.
