  1. I gotta admit, putting stick'um on the chest protector had never occurred to me before. When first hearing of this (and prior to seeing the video) I assumed the ball had simply become wedged between individual sections of padding that you sometimes see on certain styles of equipment, but that's certainly not the case here. But now there's there's visual proof that not only can it help to reduce a ball's bounce but can pretty much stop it in its tracks, I suspect the league will want to take a closer look at things. When asked if he put any pine tar or similar substance on his chest protector Molina reportedly answered; "That's a stupid question". Ummm, no it isn't Yadi.

  3. ... except, y'know, for the times it does. In this case though, our old friend Yadier Molina's chest protector either had some sticky foreign (or maybe even domestic) substance on it or he's found a way to defy several laws of physics. [youtube:2lgr0y2m]k8UjLR5nvx0[/youtube:2lgr0y2m] The joke, however, winds up on him and the Cardinals since the batter (Hail Szczr!!) reaches 1st base on the play and later scores on Kyle Schwarber's go-ahead 3R 7th inning HR. Cubs win 6-4 This is almost as good (and as incriminating) as the time when the cork from Sammy Sosa's busted bat covered the infield like a hail storm, although I don't know if there are any rules specific to this. Seems to me that coating/spraying the protecter with whatever would be an advantage in keeping the ball from bounding too far away. Or, in this case, a bit too much of an advantage.
  4. Marlins didn't even change their bullpen all that much either. Their 'Big Three' from last year are the same, AJ Ramos closing (he got the 10th inning save last night) with that Bear Claw guy (Barraclough) and (good evening Mr.) David Phelps setting-up from from the right side. And despite the fact that we'll see two LH starters this weekend (Chen & Conley), now that longtime lefty bullpenner Mike Dunn has gone off to rockier pastures (Colorado) the Fish don't even currently have a LHR on their roster.

I was there one year early April for fireworks and it was really cold, had to wait for the FDNY to give the all clear as it was windy .... Oh good because there's no chance it'll be windy tonight.
  6. I'm even more pissed that Saturday is because that's something totally within team control and they somehow decided this is a good idea. Both our April home game Sundays will be night games.
  7. [u:3hiefd32]Marlins KTE - April 7-9[/u:3hiefd32] Just what we want in early April in the Northeast, all all-night game weekend series!! Marlins dropped 2 of 3 in Washington, losing 4-2 and 6-4 before winning Thursday afternoon/night in 10 innings. Friday - 7:10 Wei-Yin Chen [5-5; 4.96; 1.28 in 22 2016 starts] vs Zach Wheeler [0-0; 0.00; 0.00, 0] Saturday - 7:10 Adam Conley [8-6; 3.85; 1.40 in 25 starts] vs Robert Gsellman -- This was supposed to be Syndergaard doubling up prior to needing the 5th starter but the blister has pushed him back to Sunday Sunday - 8:10 ESPN Edinson Volquez [10-11; 5.37; 1.55 in 34 starts for KCR] vs Syndergaard - Opening Day starters taking their second turns Volquez held the Nats to 1 run over 5 IP on opening day. The 2017 Marlins return pretty much the same lineup from last year (one that scored fewer than the 2016 Mets) C - JT Realmuto 1B - Justin Bour 2B - Dee Gordon SS - Adeiny Hechavarria 3B - Martin Prado LF - Christian Yelich CF - Marcel Ozuna RF - Giancarlo Stanton Prado is currently DL'd, over the first series they used a combo of Derek Deitrich (2) and Miguel Rojas (1) during week 1
  8. And the Nats, in the closing game of their home series with the Marlins which was (at least) twice delayed by weather, give up two in the 8th to tie the game, one more in the 9th to re-tie it, then another in the 10th to lose and prevent a sweep. The Nats' pen-in-progress had done well when needed in Games 1 & 2, but this afternoon/evening experienced serial failures by Kelley, Solis, erstwhile closer Treinan, and newcomer Blanton. So, y'know, tied for 1st place and all.
  9. Nice inning by Salas even if the line score isn't going to look so pretty - and a big strikeout of the kid when things got hairy. Now the only problem is that all those runners turned the lineup over and so whoever gets the 9th gets the meat of the Braves order.
  10. Geeeez, they haven't hit a ball hard all inning and they get the tying run to the plate!!!
  11. It's a good thing we've kept Freddie pretty much down in this series cuz Kemp is kicking our butts (4 2Bs + 2 HR) He was looking like he was headed for the skids out west there but now seems reborn with the Braves. Still a small sample size but he's hitting around .290 with 14 HRs plus 19 2Bs in <250 ABs for the Braves since being traded there last July.
  12. It almost seemed like that 'HAR-VEE' chant un-nerved Harvey a bit. And the next pitch was his last pitch.
  13. 4 innings of one-hit ball (swinging bunt) from Harvey, and on just over two innings worth of pitches. 35 so far to get 12 outs, anything less than 60 is considered decent. Now all we have to do is, y'know, hit.
  14. Bunch of back of their career vets latching onto teams: - Drew Stubbs to the Giants - Mike Pelfrey to the ChiSox - Edwin Jackson to the Orioles - and Ryan F. Howard to the Braves? All apparently on minor league deals so, for the moment anyway, you can likely find these guys on back fields in Florida and then in places like Charlotte, NC and Gwinnett County GA
  15. No, Grimm was talking about echo-Mantle fans, guys who were Yanqui fans because of Mantle even though Mantle was retired (or, in Harper's case, practically dead) before they were even born. The analogy here would be if Harvey's kids (one each by seven different emaciated Eastern European models) became Yanqui fans because their old man had #2 pinstriped footie pajamas as a child.
  16. Benjamin Grimm wrote: I feel like there's a whole echo generation of young players who love Mickey Mantle because their fathers did. Oh there definitely is. Bryce Harper is one despite growing up in Las Vegas. But his father was a Yanqui/Mantle guy and there are a sizable percentage of Nats fans who have pretty much conceded that he's Bronx-bound as soon as he's able. Jason Giambi brought his father to his MFY signing/introduction and pointed out how he chose uniform #25 because it at least added up to 7 And now we get to wonder how many echo-Jeterites there are going to be in the future.
  17. Yeah, my only objections to the Marlins aesthetics-wise is the big M which, to me, looks like the logo telling you where to catch the Municipal bus. The stadium is fine as long as you're not one of the taxpayers who had to foot the bill for it but that's hardly unique to them and, besides, it's their problem not mine. My objections to the franchise are more along the lines of JCL's - from Huizenga's ownership on through. From the tear-down mentality even when it wasn't called for just when they should have been building a fan base all while pocketing revenue sharing money, the insistence of calling themselves 'Florida' because they wanted to 'claim the state' ahead of any franchise in Tampa, to the 'credit' they take for getting lucky twice (still have two more WS wins than division titles) as if those wins represented some sort of strategy rather than just getting hot at the right time, and then the whole tear-down thing all over again.
  18. Yeah, an awful lot of bullpen shaming going on for a team that amassed all of 5 hits over 12 innings ... 60% of them by Jay Bruce Fact is we were dancing around trouble much of the night -- Braves were 1 for 10 w/RiSP prior to the Kemp hit -- and didn't come close to deserving to win that game. NYM bats only had 2 ABs w/RiSP and none in regulation -- only the aforementioned back-to-back d'Arnaud and Kelly K's following Bruce's 10th inning 2B (and the IW to Duda).
  19. If this inning gets around to Freddie they'll have to bring in Smoker ... and now it looks like it's going to.

Top prospect that they got from Cleveland in the Andrew Miller trade last summer.
