  1. Mark Melancon off to a rough start as the SFG closer. the big money FA signing got the first two outs of the 9th protecting a one-run lead ... but then four straight hits later and the DBacks were doing the jump dance thing in the infield. Giants had scored in top 9 to re-take the lead and had several chances to add on more but left 'em loaded and paid for it. They blew a lot of 9th inning leads last year too (although not enough for our tastes).
  2. Hey, I'm just hoping to keep Freddie under two by the close of business on Thursday.
  3. Pagan, even though not quite what he was, would still be the better all-around bench player of those two. The only advantage to Upton would be that he'd retain the ability to make the opposing manager adjust his pen and maybe even soil his undies if a long-ball late in the game could change things around.
  4. Your ML HR leader 1-1/2 games into the season? That would be Bumgarner, Madison (2) His first put his team ahead 2-0. Then I guess he got pissed about allowing the Snakes to tie it 3-3 so he put them ahead again with his second. And there was little doubt about either.

  6. Melvin (aka" BJ) Upton - released by Toronto. This season is the final one of the five year deal he signed with the Braves back in November of 2012. Safe to say that deal didn't work out well for Atlanta although it worked even less well for the Padres who acquired him in an April 2015 trade and assumed the remaining $46+ million on the contract. SD then dealt him to Toronto in July '16 but remained responsible for all but $5 mil of what was by then over $22 mil remaining.
  7. 7-3 Rays is your final Oh, and Dallas Braden (SF/ARZ booth) is going with a combination of the hipster balding-guy man-bun combined with a serious mountain man beard.
  8. DocTee wrote: is Mejia really still on the 40 man roster? If so, why? He's still NYM property -- they even "negotiated" a contract for him this winter even though he'll never see a penny of it -- which allows them a first crack at retaining him on the off-chance that he gets reinstated before the years of team control run out and on the further off-chance that they'd want him at that point. But I guess there's no downside in doing it that way and the fact that he's suspended means that he's not currently taking up an active slot on the 40. Just think of him as the equivalent of being on the 60-day DL but, instead of 60 days, his stint lasts until he accumulates enough service time (and, yes, suspended players accumulate service time) to be a FA after the 2019 season.
  9. Nothing to report quite yet but, even though we have to wait another 24 hours, the '17 season kicks off in a few minutes with the Yanx at Tampa. Later on the Giants are at Arizona and then the Cubs at Cardinals tonight. Not sure why that last one isn't the other way around as the idea of the champions getting the opening Sunday Night treatment at home seemed to be a building tradition there for a few years, but whatever ... as 'The Void' is officially over!!
  10. I even forgot about Nimmo which makes it five guys on the DL, maybe not all guys who would have started, sure, but it still makes it three position players who totaled 404 PAs last season (and only made that few because of multiple injuries last season) plus two hurlers who started nearly 1/5 (30) of the games and relieved in 9 others. That's a lot before a season even begins at a time when one of the things we're counting on is that the injuries couldn't possibly be worse.
  11. So the season that couldn't possibly be as DL-laden as last year's manages to start out with four presumed starters/significant role players on the DL before even getting to Day 1: Wright, Lagares, Matz, Lugo I hope nobody mentions that this year's squad can't possibly hit worse with RiSP as the 2016 version did.
  12. * SFG release Jimmy Rollins One suspects that that's gotta be it for Jimmy. He hasn't played since being released by the ChiSox last June and while an invite from his Bay area home must have been enticing, it's tough to see what he's still chasing at this point. * Reds release OF Desmond Jennings Once a pretty decent prospect for the Rays, but is now 30 y/o and hasn't played a full-ish season since 2014. One suspects he could catch on somewhere, but when this year's version of the Reds is dropping you ...
  13. Did Lucky Larry have any kids with his first wife? Wikipedia is unclear on that matter. He did have the one son with the Hooters girl, three more -- all sons -- with wifey #2, and just recently had son #5 with wife #3, not surprisingly a former Playboy model. If there were any others I've missed, either with wife #1 or with some other waitress to be named later, he might well be on his way to fielding an entire team.
  14. The Braves are going to score runs this year - especially seeing as how that new park looks like it's more inviting to hitters than the last one. Freddie could hit Fifty there. Their question remains whether all the AARP pitchers they picked up over the winter will provide a bridge long enough to get to the up and coming ones they have on the farm. If the oldsters fade while the youngsters don't pan out as expected then they're going to lose a lot of high-scoring games. But if some combination of Bartolo/Dickey/Garcia have another year in them and/or the baby arms come faster than expected, this could be a very dangerous team very quickly. They've done a remarkably quick pivot as soon as they realized that those big contracts they tried a few years ago weren't going to work. And I still don't what the fuck Arizona was thinking by dealing 1/1 draft pick Dansby Swanson PLUS Ender Inciarte PLUS pitcher Aaron Blair for Shelby Miller. And Miller was the guy the Braves had turned Jason Heyward into just a year earlier.
  15. Other Opening Day pitchers this weekend whose names you might recognize include: Dustin Nippert, Carlos Villanueva, Andy Van Hakken, Henry Sosa, Jeff Manship, Brooks Raley, Merrill Kelly, Donn Roach, Zack Patrick, Hector Noesi Those are the starters for the Doosan Bears, Hanwah Eagles, Nexon Heroes, LG Twins, NC Dinos, Lotte Giants, SK Wyverns, KT Wiz, Sansung Lions, and Kia Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization. Despite a limit of 3 foreigners per team, every one of the ten teams in the KBO had one of those foreigners as their opening day starters on Friday. All of the above except for Petrick and Kelly have some ML experience on their resume including Jeff Manship who pitched two scoreless innings for the Indians in last year's WS.
  16. I think Field just called Greg to congratulate him on his electoral victory and promised to work with him over the upcoming year despite the sometimes nasty nature of the previous campaign.

  18. His brother Brett, a 1st baseman, had some time with the Giants a few years back but has been plying his trade in Korea since 2014
  19. Well, it looks from recent lineups like the Braves think Swanson is their #2 hitter. We'll see. 20. I wasn't suggesting it, mostly just wanted to get the parody in.
  21. No one seems to be tempted by the fruit of Erik's brother. I guess the truth of his .192 BA was discovered.
  22. Ruben Amaro Sr., 81 Playing career from 1958 - 1969, for the Phils mostly although came up with Cards and finished with Yanx and Angels Typical glove-first, low-power SS of his era [.234/.309/292 for his career], won a Gold Glove and found some back of the pack MVP votes in the ill-fated 1964 Philly season. Coached and scouted after that. Born in Mexico (I would have guessed one of the islands) his MLB career blazed a trail for his Pennsylvania-born namesake son to go to Stanford and then a ML career of his own followed by a stint as an exec for the Phils.
  23. Where is this playing/showing/streaming/renting?

[fimg=250]http://wizbangblog.com/images/2008/10/robert_shaw_rip/Shaw.jpeg[/fimg] Originally came to the Mets in a trade from a team in Russia (with love) and had a great debut when he retired the side 1-2-3 in his debut. But in his next outing he got stung when he took a pitch to the jaw on that black Sunday game and was never the same after that.
