  1. Yanx got the good Tanaka today even though that's been a hit or miss thing most of the year. And a 1-0 game needing only 8-1/2 innings still comes in at 3:20 Game 4, Monday at 7:00 - pending the weather. Severino for the Yanx, TBD for Cleveland
  2. Chad Ochoseis wrote: Damn. Just listening, but that sounded like a great catch by Judge. A good one, but less than spectacular. Basically the ball was so high that Judge had plenty of time to get to the wall and just wait for it to come down. Then it was just a matter of a tall guy guarding a short wall. It certainly would have been a HR, but he was able to prevent it with a nice controlled leap.
  3. I've only seen about 30 seconds of that crew on their set, and my only reaction is that, even standing amongst large-ish guys like Keith & Burkhardt, and the significantly large ARod and Papi, Frank Thomas looks like a building.
  4. Boston looks like they're going to survive to fight another day despite another case of a one-inning outing by a starter (Foster this time) but, holy shit, every other pitch in this game is followed by a mound conference!! - it's either the catcher, an infielder or three, the pitching coach, or the manager. 7-3 Sox with two on and still no one out in the bottom of the 7th, but in a game that has already left the three hour mark in the dust.
  5. It was hardly an original joke so at best I'll chip in a small portion towards your keyboard replacement fund. The movie came out in 1962 just a year prior to Wine & Rojas becoming teammates with the Phillies in 1963 where they were the usual SS / 2B combo for the better part of five seasons together, so that reference has been made a bunch of times before. McCarver used that line often.
  6. I think they should hire Bobby Wine as their manager and Cookie Rojas as the bench coach, because who wouldn't want to live through the days of Wine and Rojas?
  7. According to two tweets from beat reporter Jason Beck of MLB.com, Cleveland Indians designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion’s MRI revealed no structural damage. He’s considered day-to-day with a sprained ankle. Encarnacion said he was relieved at the results, having initially feared something much worse. His goal is to get the swelling down with an expectation that he’ll play again this postseason. Terry Francona: “He is, I would say, I don’t know if ’remarkably’ better is a good word, but pretty close. He’s doing much better today. I don’t think he’s going to start tomorrow, but he’s not been ruled out, either. So, we’ll take our time and allow him to continue to get treatment. But if he’s that close to being available, that’s a really good sign. So, we’re obviously not going to do anything roster-wise.” As of now, Cleveland has no plans to replace Encarnacion on the roster.
  8. The start of this one pretty much got ignored with the lengthy Yanqui game on Friday night (this one almost ended first despite starting 2-1/2 hours later). Strasburg carried a no-hitter into the 6th but got done in by 2 unearned runs while the Nats bats got no-nit from the 3rd thru 9th innings making the Cubs the first and so far only road team to win a game in this year's playoffs. Cubs 3 - Nats 0 Game 2 (5:30) will see a couple of lefties on the mound. Gio Gonzalez for the Nats as they continue to be cagey about the condition of Scherzer's hamstring (or ankle, or knee, or whatever). Jon Lester, not exactly pitching his best ball down the stretch, for the Cubs
  9. Girardi's reasoning after the game isn't going to win him many points either: "I didn't want to break my pitcher's rhythm" There's a fucking mound conference in MFY games about every third pitch but suddenly he doesn't want to upset his pace! I used to think Posada was the cause of all those mound meetings but they've continued in Yanqui-land long after he's gone. And, yes, they do get an extra review in playoff games. I'd be in favor a giving manager's two challenges in every game but they'd have to do it without the phone consultation. You get ten seconds to challenge or we're moving on. That would at least get rid of the microscopic overturns and it'll force the manager to rely on his players more often. Between the non-review of the foul/HBP and the reversal of the pickoff at 2nd base, Cleveland was the beneficiary of the rule last night. And they didn't even have to release their supply of midges on MFY relievers this time. Bet they got 'em saved up and ready to swarm if this goes back there for Game Five.
  10. So even though these teams get a day off today before resuming on Sunday night (7:30) the bullpen that the Yanx lean on so heavily has been taxed pretty heavily and might have trouble bouncing back if Tanaka finds himself in early trouble in Game 3 Between the games Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday each of their relievers has made two appearances except for Warren & Garcia who each pitched in only Thursday's game Chad Green -- 2.1 IP / 52 pitches total David Robertson -- 5.0 / 77 Tommy Kahn -- 3.0 / 37 Aroldis Chapman -- 3.0+ / 47 Dellin Betances -- 3.0 / 46 Adam Warren -- 1.0 / 22 Jamie Garcia -- 2.2 / 44
  11. Edgy MD wrote: So much Yankee down-ness. Who will replace Girardi? The biggest complaint about Girardi tonight was that the Yanx didn't challenge the HBP which loaded the bases and preceded the Lindor Grand Slam The HP ump immediately called that it hit the batter's hand but it certainly could have hit the knob of the bat. The Yanx opted not to challenge -- though that's not usually the manger's call -- and the next batter, Lindor, banked a pitch off the foul pole in RF to bring the lead from 8-3 down to 8-7 At that point, what are you saving your challenges for?!?
  12. MFS62 wrote: Frayed Knot wrote: And if you didn't see the Encarnacion injury, I'd be shocked if he plays again this year. What happened? At work we were wondering why he wasn't in there against CC when we were able to see the in-game box score. Bases loaded (or maybe just 1st & 2nd, I forget), Encarnacion on 2nd. Jay Bruce hits a soft liner up the middle but the shift has the SS behind 2nd base. Gregorius catches the ball and dives towards 2nd to double off E.E. (my spell check keeps trying to turn that name into Incarnation) He beats the fielder back to the bag but grossly twisted his ankle in doing so and then, to add insult to injury, came off the base because of the injury so replay review turned it into an inning-ending DP just when it looked like the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" were poised to break the game open (3-2 Cleveland at the time when it had been 2-0 Yanx).
  13. Definitely. It's much more a people-managing job now than the strategy and direction-setting director for the organization the way it used to be. As Ron Darling said in the interview that bmfc linked earlier today, in his day a player would consider it a good year if he went the entire season basically without having a full conversation with either the manager or the general manger. Much more touchy-feely these days with the tone for strategy being set from a level or two above the field manager's head.
  14. YAN GOMES ... ALL-[crossout:3ktpc02f]BRAZILIAN[/crossout:3ktpc02f] AMERICAN HERO!!!
  15. Edgy MD wrote: Point of clarification: Those ages are the ages they will be on opening day 2018. Yeah, and I thought Stump was 74 at the time was managing over a quarter century ago.
  16. Have I mentioned recently how much I love the replay system? Worst post-season pinch-running experience since Kolten Wong got picked off as the tying run for the final out of a game with Albert Pujols at the plate.
  17. Jay Bruce and Joe Smith ... ex-NYM heroes all over the field.
  18. Well this game has taken some interesting turns!! And if you didn't see the Encarnacion injury, I'd be shocked if he plays again this year.
  19. Yeah, I was just hoping that Kluber would have his bad day tomorrow when he wasn't pitching. Like maybe he gets a flat tire on his truck, or his dishwasher breaks down.
  20. Price out of the bullpen saves the game from being a total disaster for Boston (two pop-outs w/bases loaded) but they still have to figure out a way to get to Keuchel. 4-1 Houston in mid-4th (nearly two hours into the game - ugh!)
  21. One vote cast for the [crossout:8rhchcra]man[/crossout:8rhchcra] men named 'NOT Matt Williams'
  22. I thought Stump Merrill was 74 y/o while he was managing
  23. Centerfield wrote: I'm glad Wally Backman is not a candidate. He never struck me as particularly bright. But he's fiery, and he's scrappy, and he's clutch, and he'll do whatever it takes!!!
  24. GAME 2: Kluber vs Sabathia in a battle of past Cleveland CY winners (2014 / 2007); 5:00 MLBN Sabathia, despite looking like toast during various times over the last couple years, actually had himself a nice season for the Yanx [14-5; 3.69; 1.27; 27 starts] as he attempts to reinvent himself from a thrower to a pitcher in his old age (36). That said, he's not Kluber.
  25. Nice to get a win in the books AND have Corey Kluber in your pocket for Game 2 With all the talk earlier about how few hits the Yanx had (three in total), I didn't realize until the end that the seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians" only had five themselves.
