A visit to the White House after winning a championship should be above politics. Otherwise you get into situations that are distracting from the reason for the visit, which is the championship. In any given year, a number of a team's players voted for the person in the Oval, and a number did not -- at least the ones who are American citizens and allowed to vote. A bunch of a teams' fans supported the person, and a number did not. If each appearance becomes a media debate over who is going to show up and who is not going to show up -- and who is going to call attention to themselves by announcing they won't show up -- then they should just stop doing the appearances. My fantasy reaction to skipping the theoretical WH invite I'm offered during however long Agent Orange remains in office is one which has nothing to do with politics but rather that my refusal to show is based simply on the idea that I find him to be such a despicable person. I would also choose some public method to explain that the reason behind my no-show is most decidedly NOT due to any disagreement on political specifics but on the (lack of) character of the man himself.
  2. Eiland talks about pitching inside -- which, if nothing else, should make Ron & Keith happy.
  3. One of the Yanx' infielders rolled his wrist during the NYM/MFY game at Tampa the other day so this might partially be in reaction to that. This kind of reminds me of when Todd Zeile signed a late-career contract w/the Yanx. That one ended up with him being released in August after just 66 games played and after he complained about being promised him a lot more playing time at signing time than they wound up giving him. This one smells like it might turn out similarly.

  5. He's 'The Dude' man! Just 'The Dude' [fimg=400:soyq7zw4]https://www.civilized.life/assets/Uploads2/_resampled/CroppedFocusedImageWzk2Miw2MDAsIngiLDExN10/big-lebowski-marijuana-strains.jpg[/fimg:soyq7zw4]

Yeah, I was just about to post that how you feel about that deal depends on how much you think his trends are likely to continue. H/9: 5.9, 6.3, 8.0 [2015-2017] HR/9: 0.4, 0.7, 1.2 ERA: 1.77, 3.10, 3.53 K/BB: 4.92, 2.50, 2.96 IP: 229, 197, 168 ... and then there are the reports of reduced velocity, etc. That he only turned 32 earlier this week means that it's not out of the question that he turns things around, but the 2014-2016 portion of his career [9th, 1st, and 9th in CY voting] seems more like the outlier when compared to the 2010-2013 and then 2017 seasons.
  7. So, stupid question here, is 'FACEBOOK WATCH' available to those who aren't a member of FACEBOOK?
  8. 2R HR from Wilmer tightens things back up to 4-3 Tiggers in the 7th Mets have 4 hits
  9. The one I'm thinking of wasn't: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0990413/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 It might have been based on someone real, although I got the idea that 'Sugar' was more some composite character not meant to represent anyone specific.
  10. So, other than the bad bullpen and stuff, there was this nice little sequence from the 2nd thru 4th innings: - Jose Marmolejos: Strikes out swinging - Moises Sierra: Strikes out swinging - Brian Goodwin: Strikes out swinging - Trea Turner: Strikes out swinging - Bryce Harper: Strikes out swinging - Anthony Rendon: Strikes out swinging - Matt Adams: Strikes out swinging Those were the final seven hitters Syndergaard faced for the afternoon.
  11. Ken was a good hitter too. .262 career BA, 29 of his 91 career hits went for extra bases: 18 2Bs, 1 3B, 10 HR Also Wes (P) and Rick © Ferrell And Wes could hit too, holds the career record for HRs as a pitcher (37 - plus 1 as a PH)
  12. Oh, like I said, he is reportedly quite English proficient, just meticulously never when a camera or microphone is around. It's Japanese to their cameras & mics but always via a translator to stateside media.
  13. SUGAR was one of those dramas that played out almost as if a documentary. Well done. The one baseball movie which gets low marks from me in opposition to general crowd wisdom in LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. I never did get through it; mainly I was too turned off by Jon Lovitz playing Jon Lovitz and mostly by Madonna playing Madonna (or at least playing herself in her 'Look at me, I'm a slut' phase). It was as if the movie was written by the actors' agents trying to promote a brand. And, yeah, I know that the flick is about more than that but those were enough to make me skip the rest, and if that means I missed a halfway decent movie then that's something I'll live with.
  14. The interesting thing about Ichiro's eventual HoF induction will be to hear him speak English, something he reportedly does well according to the very small group of folks who have heard him do so. He has never, to my knowledge, conducted an interview or even answered a single question in English during his now 17 season MLB career. On the other hand we'll get to hear the same thing with Vlad Guerrero this summer, except that I don't know if he ever learned any English.
  15. I don't think this is a strategy for Boras as much as it is a justification for pointing out that the compensation conditions do in fact depress the market value for those to whom it's attached. If negotiations are going to drag into the season he might as well set up his his anti-compensation pick arguments in advance just in case it gets to that point.
  16. I looked up Everybody Wants Some and remembered it's something like Linklater's Dazed and Confused, but in the 80s. I didn't know it was a baseball movie at all (maybe it's not, who knows). Anyway, it's on Amazon Prime if anyone else has that. viewtopic.php?f=11&t=25330&p=684683&hilit=linklater#p684683

  18. I know the 50 ABs (12 hits, 1 HR) of catcher Robinson Cancel for your 2008-2009 NYM were memorable, so the odds are that his new tenure as manager for the Asheville Tourists (Sally Lg, Colorado franchise) should be just as notable for the Puerto Rican native.
  19. Ichiro poised to sign with ... the Mariners.
  20. But, again, there's a difference between citing a club and commenting on what is already public knowledge vs building an entirely new business around using the league, its teams, its schedule and contests as the basis for your income. It would be one thing for us to have 'Game of Thrones' reviews here or create a separate G-o-T discussion group on line. But it would be quite another for McDonald's to invite increased customer interest by including game cards with each of the characters in the show to be given away free with the purchase of every 'Happy Meal' I'm not a lawyer, don't tend to play one on the internet, and aren't claiming this is cut-n-dried one way or the other, especially seeing as how this will be a whole new ballgame (pun intended) when and if this thing gets all legalized. What I am saying is that I disagree with Nymr's assertion that this has been, in effect, pre-settled and that the league(s) have no legal leg to stand on and that if I were them I'd sure as hell be out there fighting for a cut of this potential future business.
  21. There was a similar case involving baseball and fantasy leagues where MLB tried to argue that it owned all the stats that came from their games and therefore deserved a piece of that action. But I don't think that's the same legal argument as presumably private gambling interests directing their would-be customers directly to games involving copyrighted names like Cubs and Red Sox and claiming that they're not attempting to make profits off of an association with someone else's property without their permission.
  22. Not sure why having the names and the outcomes of their products/contests used by presumably private companies to further their own interests would leave the leagues with no legal leg on which to stand in saying that they want to be compensated for allowing their use.
  23. The sports leagues see legalized gambling as inevitable whether they're admitting so (NBA, MLB) or are still in denial mode (NFL) as least as far as public consumption is concerned. The idea that Nevada is going to continue to have the sole legal waiver granted to them in perpetuity is absurd. That it's lasted as long as it has is a legal anomaly created by mob ties from a long time ago coupled with a government (local level on up to federal) which purports to hate gambling except for the kind that they have a monopoly on everywhere outside of Vegas. So naturally when the reality gets closer the leagues are going to want a say in how Their product is used and, hell yeah, I'd want to get paid for allowing the state/locality to make money off an association with my business. The idea that they could get around things by only putting 'Detroit' and 'Boston' on the cards rather than the copyrighted names of 'Tigers' and 'Red Sox' isn't going to cut it. I have no idea how ESPN gets "a cut" by doing this story nor the implication that they should otherwise leave it alone. It's a straightforward news story.
  24. Considering how huge Rusty has been for a long time now, I can't say I'm surprised by this news even though he's still a few weeks shy of turning 74 (4/1 - if he makes it). Saddened, but not surprised.
  25. My opinions of Mickey C. will turn on a lot of things but none of them are going to have anything to do with little Donny Jr photobombing the end of fishing trip.
