  1. Sunday (May 30) was the 83rd anniversary of Babe Ruth's final game ... and in his case we KNOW it will remain the final one. Gary mentioned, when talking about the two year span since Wright last strapped 'em on, that David had HR'd in each of his final three ML games and wondered if anyone had done that before or since. My first thought at the time went to Ruth who I thought had hit 3 HRs in his final game but it turns out that, although his final 3 HRs did all come in one game, that game occurred five days before he retired. The then 40 y/o Babe would go on to play in only parts of those five games getting no hits plus 4 walks on just 13 more plate appearances - so those HRs were his final hits in the big leagues. In all he'd get just 92 PA/72AB for the 1935 Boston Braves (the tomahawk chop noises supposedly drove him out of the game) and that 3-HR game represented half his season total for that partial season.
  2. Wasn't Wheeler Chatwood the kid who hit the game-winning shot in HOOSIERS?
  3. So for all the crying and rending of clothing over the last week, we went into the homes of two different 1st place clubs for 4 game series and wound up 3-5, the frustrating part is that it could have been lot better seeing as how 3 of the 5 losses were via walk-offs and that the margins in those losses were 1, 1, 1, 1, oh yeah, and 12 And then there's also the minor problem of the 17 new and different injuries plus the house catching on fire while we were away, but there's nothing to be done with those things except to deal with them as they come up and move on. Game tomorrow.
  4. Don't know how long this will continue, but he's been contributing so far. Adding in tonight he's 7/23 w/2 2Bs plus 5 BB vs 6 K - and is playing a decent LF and providing a righty bat.

  6. Finally one of those fucking bloops goes our way. Lord knows the Braves have gotten their share of those this series.
  7. Tim Peterson MLB debut vs Albies - Freeman - Markakis = 1-2-3 on 7 pitches.
  8. Vargas has been both in control (no runs, 2 hits, 1 BB) and efficient (64 pitches thru 5)
  9. No rain slated for tonight in northern Georgia.
  10. So now that we've got a Cosell on the payroll is he going to announce that; 'Ladies and gentlemen, the Queens is burning'?
  11. Benjamin Grimm wrote: And of course, please feel free to make your own Roseanne Barr jokes. There must be something in the water fountains at ABC. Except that Cosell's remark was totally without malice while Barr is just a fucking idiot specifically looking to be provocative. Not sure what's worse actually, that she made the remarks in the first place or that she's now blaming them on her use of 'ambien'.
  12. Howard, IIRC, had only daughters (2) so either one or both of the Cosell girls not only retained her name (single mom, divorce, etc.) but also passed it on to her kid(s) and eventually down to grandson Colin, or Colin chose to adopt his grandpappy's name over his given one as a way into the business. Greg Cosell, a football writer/talking head, is a nephew of Howard (brother's kid?) and therefore a one generation removed cousin of this guy.
  13. Well the Fill in the blank _______[Matz] X-Rays were negative, so at least there's that. An MRI is on the slate for sometime today. I asked if I could watch while they did it so as to report back to you ASAP but the team turned down that request. This is said to have occurred on the pitch right before he hit his double, that was the swing where the bat flew out of his hands and towards the stands, apparently bending his finger back in the process. He said it started to throb right as he got to 2nd base. Coincidentally, that's what she said too.
  14. The Mets and Pythagorus don't really match up well this year. A .500 record with a negative run differential usually implies a lot of close wins and larger losses. The large losses they have: seven of them by seven or more runs [8, 8, 10, 7, 11, 11, 11] -- that's a shitload of extraneous runs-against in just 26 defeats -- and by contrast those losses are offset by only two big wins: [10, 12] On the other side, a better than expected Pythag tends to imply you've grabbed more than your share of close wins, yet the Mets (like you haven't noticed) are now 7-11 in those so it's not like they've been on some kind of unsustainable roll of good luck just to get to the treading water level. Were they in the first two week of the year? ... of course they were, 11-1 type of streaks don't exist without a dose of luck. But I think the 'a run is a run is a run' system named after Mr. Pythagorus can get skewed in this still-small-ish sample of 52 games. It's still just an estimate, not a scientific law.
  15. Some days you're just in the wrong place at the wrong time [fimg=500:39dv09rb]https://thenypost.files.wordpress.com/2018/05/180529-decapitated-skeleton-pompei-01-1.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&w=1286[/fimg:39dv09rb]
  16. That's their sixth walk-off loss of the year (they've won two) and, of their last six losses, three have come via walk-offs (2 HRs and a bases-loaded BB).
  17. Camargo and Culberson now have four combined HRs on the year ... half of which have been walk-offs vs the Mets
  18. Where's our piece-o-shit 2-strike bloop hit when we need it?
  19. Making his debut pitching outing with the SF Giants tonight was Dereck Ivan Rodriguez [fimg=200]https://s.hdnux.com/photos/71/52/27/15115747/7/920x920.jpg[/fimg] Not quite as 'pudgy' as the old man (listed at 6' 1" - 215) and much better moss. Didn't pitch so well (don't make your ML debut at Coors Field) but he did hit a double.
  20. That's the fourth grounder tonight that the Braves have hit with a runner on 1st (or more) and all four were hit too shitty to be turned into DPs and this was the first one where the Mets were even able to get a force.
  21. Including the two tonight, 55 of Gardner's now 88 career HRs have come at home (he's played for just one team) in virtually the same number of PAs Put another way, that's a rate of exactly 5 out of every 8 (62.5%) at YS II & III. So in a theoretical neutral park that 88 becomes more like 66 I didn't see either of his tonight so I don't know whether either or both were the classic 315 ft specials.
  22. The Astros have 10 hits (3 for XB) plus 4 walks plus were the beneficiary of FIVE Yaqui errors and yet somehow managed only 5 runs out of all that. So of course the Yanx just tied it up in the 9th on Brett Gardener's 2nd HR of the game.
  23. Hey Wisler, you've just been NIMMOLATED ZVon needs to come up with an image for that
  24. So what exactly were these guys doing with their fingers during their off days? I'm afraid to ask.
