  1. You wouldn't think a liberal city like San Francisco would have as many Hunters on its team as do the Giants [strickland & Pence].
  2. Gooden's September (1985) that GKR are talking about. 9/6 @ LAD -- 9 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 10 K, 0 BB [2-0 NYM Win] 1 9/11 v StL -- 9 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 7 K, 3 BB [0-1 L] 2 9/16 v PHI -- 9 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 11 K, 2 BB [9-0 W] 9/21 v PIT -- 8 IP, 1 R (unearned), 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB [12-1 W] 9/26 @ CHI -- 9 IP, 0 R, 8 H, 7 K, 2 BB [3-0 W] 10/2 @ StL -- 9 IP, 2 R, 9 H, 10 K, 4 BB [5-2 W] 6 starts, 53 innings, 3 runs/2 Earned, 33 Hits, 49 K, 13 BB. Team = 5=1; Gooden = 4-0 1) I was at a wedding that night and went out to my car from time to time in order to catch few innings late at night 2) Cards won on a Cesar Cedeno HR in the 10th off of Orosco. John Tudor pitched all 10 for StL giving up 3 hits
  3. OK, I've upped my expectations ... sign him to a multi-year deal between innings.
  4. Man, I hadn't heard the name Casey Kelly in years now. A former 1st round pick (30th overall) out of a Florida HS way back in 2008, he quickly jumped onto some of the hot prospects list (although not THAT high) and became the guy Red Sox fans absolutely did not want to hear uttered in trade talks. But by the end of 2010 he was dealt to Sandy Eggo with Anthony Rizzo plus two more pieces for Adrian Gonzalez. A-Gone played just a season and a half for Boston. Kelly, soon to be 29 y/o, has pitched in 22 ML games (10 starts) for his career while not appearing at all in 2013, 2014, or 2017 Tonight is his 4th game, 2nd start, for the Giants this season.

  6. All three leading NL CY candidates will be in action Thursday afternoon. deGrom vs Bumgarner in NYC while Scherzer vs Nola face each other at the same time some 300 miles to the south
  7. And now he's got the bad luck to be hitting FA-gency a year too late. Now, granted, it'll his second go-around at it, but still ...
  8. bmfc1 wrote: July 4 is an off-day. That's some stupid shit. I hadn't even noticed that. That shit should be illegal.
  9. Yanqui fans are still mad at Torre for playing the infield in on Luis Gonzalez in a bases loaded/one out situation 17 years ago.
  10. Now that I think about it, I did see the most recent incarnation (three years ago - whatever version that was). We had just completed the sale of my mother's house and my sister and I were leaving the next morning with the cable/phone/internet/etc. already cut off. So the latest MI was at the local and we killed the night there. A fun ride? Yeah, maybe. But I remember nothing about the movie today and that was probably true the morning afterward as well ... and therein lies the problem with that series. oe: and I also wondered how Tom Cruise was injured worse, during the stunt itself or in falling over himself to let the news accidentally leak out that he was injured doing his own stunts.
  11. For your late-night viewing plans: The LA & SD trips are both mid-week, although the first of the four in LA is on Memorial Day so probably an earlier start for that one. At SF & ARZ are weekend deals and SFG usually play Saturday games during the day. @ Colorado is a Mon-Wed series in mid-Sept
  12. Edgy MD wrote: Only four days off between May and June. They play 20 straight days at one point, followed by a day off, followed by eight straight days, followed by a day off, followed by 18 straight. That's 46 games in 48 days. Mickey should use about 35 pitchers. Then they get every Monday off in July. Weird. Used to be that you couldn't get scheduled for more than 19 in a row -- even rain make-ups had to be approved by the players if it were to run afoul of that guideline. Weird that they now somehow can't lay out a sked without 20 straight even though there are four extra days built into the season. Off days per month: 5, 2, 2, 9, 4, 2 That 9 in July includes the four for the ASB, but there are still five others after just two in May & June. The IL layout is normal. Yanx are always a 2+2 situation unless it's an East vs East year when it's 3+3. And there always seems to be one team where you get an extra game; it was the O's this year, Twins next.
  13. CHW x 3 (3-0) TEX x 4 (2-1) NYM x1 (0-1) yeah baby TBR x 3 (1-2) TOR x 3 (3-0) MIA x 2 (1-0) BAL x 4 CHW again x 3 DET x 3 Yanx now 11-4 on their trip through their sisters of the poor tour following their 12th inning win last night in Miami On the other hand, Dee Dee Gregorius was just DL'd with a heel problem (awkward landing on 1st base -- Gleyber Torres playing SS for now) and Aroldis Chapman left last night's game with "recurring knee problems" after facing just one batter and walking him on five pitches. But they have a 3.5 game lead on HOU/OAK for the 1st WC who are in turn 4.0 games up on fading Seattle, so there's virtually no chance of them NOT making it to the one-game WC matchup.
  14. The Dodgers have been named as the team who reportedly claimed, but then failed to work out a deal for, Bryce Harper.
  15. Two out RBI hits ... what a concept!!!
  16. I'll say this: he's certainly a guy I want on my team in 2019 Where he'll play, how often, etc. is still TBD, but he's gotta be in the mix.
  17. The Cards beat the Dodgers 5-3 on Monday night in a 9-inning game that took 4:10 -- that puts the end at about 2:20 our time. The 8 combined runs is below average for a ML game and there's nothing unusual about 17 hits. The 25 Ks are a bit high (although not that much) and the 14 walks (10 issued by StL) was certainly excessive. Lots of pitchers used as always, but only four changes were mid-inning and those are the only ones which add time. But, still, what the fuck were they doing all that time?!? Just as a reminder, that wild back-and-forth 10-9 Game 7 1960 WS game (19 runs, 25 hits, 9 pitchers) clocked in at 2:36 btw, Kenley Jansen was back and, with all the games that the Dodgers have been blowing late, they (rightfully IMO) didn't want to wait for a save opp and so brought him into a 3-3 game to start the top-9th. He promptly gave up back-to-back HRs to start the inning. Oh well.
  18. On the other hand, it's not like collisions, near misses, and other mix-ups don't occasionally occur with experienced IFs & OFs too. And, yeah, if pitchers, broadcasters, and fans are going to complain each time a shift leads to a hit that wouldn't be otherwise, they have to at least acknowledge the ones that shifts take away.
  19. A Boy Named Seo wrote: He'd make a helluva DH if they make the WS. And, probably not be coincidence, the Cubs are in Detroit for a series starting tonight. Report quickly Daniel. The cost for Muffy btw, for those of you who like to judge how this may translate into other deals, is Andruw Monasterio, a 21 y/o, no-power Venezuelan infielder currently playing at High-A (Fla St Lg) plus a PtbNL or cash (in other words: more, but not much more).
  20. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Think they'd trade Bryce Harper for Steven Matz? Actually, if they've given up on the season AND have decided (or been told) that they're not going to sign Harper in the off-season, then they'd probably jump at the idea ... which is why we shouldn't. But considering that, as poorly as the Nats have played at times, they seem incapable of playing their way out of contention, it's kind of surprising how much dumping they've already done.
  21. Howard Rodney Edwards was born in Red Jacket, West Virginia. His nickname came from his time as a Navy medic. NBA player and later coach Glenn 'Doc' Rivers was once asked by the press about the prognosis for one of his players: "You guys do realize that 'Doc' is just a nickname, right?"
  22. Benjamin Grimm wrote: Wow! That means, among other things, that anyone signing him this winter won't have to lose a draft pick. Not sure Muff would have commanded a QO anyway. I think the Nats were ready to move on even before dealing him. He'll turn 34 during opening week of 2019 and has looked decidedly less mobile (not that he was twinkletoes to start with) since missing close to a half season following 'micro-fracture' knee surgery. On the other hand, it looks like he can still hit [.300/.341/.442 in not quite 200 2018 ABs] even if he's having more trouble than ever preventing hits and/or running his own out. I assume the Cubs will use him extensively as a PH (nice bat to have off your bench for the next six weeks AND in October) but also to fill in at 3B where Kris Bryant has been out for a while, or they'll move someone else to 3B (with Madden at the helm it could be anyone) and let Murph play some 2B
  23. Was a big fan of the TV show way back when. Didn't particularly like the first movie and haven't revisited since.

  25. Do you suppose Joe Panik is going to 'Studio 54' after the game?
