I don't know how you folks keep all those flicks straight. I've probably seen less than a dozen films from Vic's list of 105 on Page 1 of this thread but I'm not even sure which ones as even those few start to blend together in my mind.

I think I had seen the coming attractions for this at a movie theatre last year sometimes and thought it maybe had some potential. But of course it's often tough to tell with action movies since you can cut up a trailer to make just about anything look good. If only I had noticed the words, 'Disney Presents' prior to sticking this on my Netflix queue I might have saved those two hours for something productive (though probably not). But man this was lousy: from mediocre CGI storms; to guys who spend hours in wet, ocean, New England storms in February and yet never seem even remotely chilly the entire time; to tepid love stories and vaguely explained back-stories that are supposed to make us care about the characters. And if the execution of it wasn't bad enough, at least the conclusion was totally predictable right down to the fact that you could probably pick out the one guy in the whole picture who dies about a half hour or more before it happens. That BOTH brothers from HELL OR HIGH WATER co-starred here makes me almost want to knock a half-star of my rating of that movie but I can't blame the actors here, Casey Affleck included. The material was just that dull that there was no way for them to overcome it. Strongly worded letter to follow.

Yeah, lack of pop was always his problem. Had some decent OBPs in the two full seasons he played, but ultimately 12 HRs across 1,600+ ML ABs from a corner infielder without speed just isn't going to cut it. I'm sure it was one of those cases where the scouts told themselves that that one missing ingredient was going to start appearing as he aged, particularly considering his size (6' 1" - 195) and his genes (pops hit 240 in a much lower HR-era). But sometimes it just never does. It didn't with Alex Ochoa either. Maybe he was one of those guys who would have been better off going to college and seeing what kind of player he was against better competition, but of course that's hindsight and nobody seemed to be thinking that back when he was being tabbed as a Top-10 prospect in baseball three years running (2000-2002). I can't remember if that three-year gap he had was caused by injuries initially or whether he just took a break before deciding he wanted to try again.

Sean Burroughs ... Holy Shit!! Haven't heard or thought about that name in years. From son of ML'er, to Little League hero, to 1st Round (9th overall - 1998) draft pick, to top prospect at BA, to ... well, not much. Had his best season in 2004 (3.2 WAR) but then pretty much fell off the cliff after that, getting only about 150 ML ABs since the 2005 season. Looking him up now after seeing his name mentioned it turns out that, while he didn't play anywhere from 2008-2010, he's continued to play virtually uninterrupted since that three-year hiatus ended. Now 36 y/o and having last poked his head into the majors with a 17 AB stint with the 2012 Twins, he's played in affiliated minor leagues (though not since 2013), three different times in the Venezuelan Winter League, and in independent leagues every year for the last four. Gotta admire that kind of stick-to-it-ness. P.S. though I remember his dad Jeff (1974 AL MVP) from the Texas Rangers, he actually started with the Washington Senators and a quick check shows that maybe only Toby Harrah out-lasted him as the last active player to have worn a Washington baseball uni until the move of the Expos created the current brand.

Edgy MD wrote: Supposedly, though, that Glenn scene is one of the more accurate moments of the film. At least, by some accounts. If it was then they needed to stage it better so that it didn't come off looking like it was a bit too convenient. And shouldn't Coster have been taking the crowbar to the 'White Only' bathroom sign?

I always keep in mind that the 'Based on Actual Events' claim doesn't remotely mean you'll be viewing actual events. But in a lot of ways I'm more OK when writers take what I'll call 'macro' liberties with the facts than I am with many of the more micro liberties that show up in films. So that when Aaron Sorkin totally conjures up Mark Zuckerberg inventing Facebook as a reaction to getting tossed over by his date it didn't bother me even though I knew it wasn't true because he was merely setting the basis for a story about creating Facebook. Which brings us to this movie where I accept that the macro story was true but then sat through a bunch of the scenes within it thinking that many of them just didn't ring true; the cop scene early on; the crowbar to the bathroom sign; John Glenn on the phone minutes before his liftoff asking for her calculations personally. Yeah, not buyin' it. I mean it certainly wasn't a bad movie. But I did fear it would be a little too cutesy going in and that turned out to be pretty much on target.

Where is this playing/showing/streaming/renting? -
Needless to say that critics almost universally loved this movie. Audiences were a bit more divided. I saw it in the theater shortly after it first came out. As the movie ends and it's still quiet just before everyone starts getting up and filing out, I hear a guy a few rows in back of me say to the person next to him, "I want my money back". I thought it was very well done even if it's hard to say that it's an enjoyable flick. A couple of bits of humor mixed in here and there but a bunch of real rough scenes as well. I went with 3 stars - would have gone 3-1/2 if that were an option.

A wealthy forty-something art gallery owner in a loveless marriage to a good-looking though vapid business man (Armie Hammer, ladies and gentlemen, in the role he was born to play!!) gets thrown for a loop when, despite little contact for almost two decades, her former husband sends her his manuscript for a novel complete with a dedication to her. The movie within a movie proceeds as it switches between the present, flashbacks of her first marriage to this future writer, and the plot of the novel itself come alive as she reads and is obviously affected by it. Is this book an homage to her? an attempt at rapprochement? a threat? revenge? Amy Adams is the art dealer. Jake Gyllenhall as both the first husband and the protagonist in his own story. Also Michael Shannon, Laura Linney, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and the aforementioned Armie Hammer. This one is a bit of a tough watch and I suspect opinions of it will swing towards both extremes to a greater degree than for most movies.

During La La Land's renewed lap around theaters on the strength of its Oscar haul including its (temporary) best picture nod, I noticed one which is designating certain showings of the film as a sing-along, presumably for those who have either seen it multiple times already and/or have memorized the soundtrack through audio recordings. Even if I were tempted to re-see this one on the big screen, I'd think I'd confine myself to the standard showing.

Filmmaker Richard Linklater has clearly moved on from his early template of Texas kids getting blasted on the occasion of celebrating their final day of high school circa 1976 (Dazed and Confused). This one instead is about a bunch of Texas kids as they get blasted in anticipation of their first day of college circa 1980. Specifically it follows a crew from the (fictional) college's baseball team -- some freshmen, some returning -- as they party and test each other and bond and get the lay of the land (among other things) over the weekend prior to Monday's start of classes and formal practices. And, yes, the official title does have the double exclamation points in it. Blake Jenner (no, no relation) a veteran of the TV show GLEE (no singing here) and Zoey Deutch (daughter of Leah Thompson) are the semi-leads in the otherwise mostly male ensemble cast which includes the likes of Juston Street (brother of ML hurler Huston) and Wyatt Russell (son of Kurt & Goldie, half-brother to Kate Hudson, and himself a former minor league hockey goaltender) Soundtrack includes contributions from (among others): The Knack, Sniff and the Tears, Sugar Hill Gang (yeah, that one), ZZ Top, Peaches & Herb, Blondie, Foreigner, Steve Forbert

Oh Oscar, Oscar, Oscar (2017 Version)

A theatre in London showed the opening half minute or so of LA LA LAND to an audience who paid to see MOONLIGHT before 'realizing' their mistake in and switching to the correct film after some mock fumbling and apologies. Now THAT'S funny! -

sharpie wrote: Went to bed right after Fay Dunaway read the wrong movie so I missed the final drama. Same here. how does stuff like that even happen. And who discovered it? The accountants? Duplicate envelopes is apparently the answer -- Dunaway & Beatty were handed a copy of the Emma Stone - Best Actress card and saw 'LA LA LAND' mentioned. But if the idea is to keep everyone in the dark about the winner -- I guess so as to maintain 'The Big Reveal' even among the presenters -- it's obvious that someone had to know and it seems odd that they'd keep a couple of the accountants backstage there just in case something that couldn't possibly happen actually happens. And if someone is going to know anyway then you might as well clue the presenters in before they go out there just to avoid something like this. They are actors after all and so you figure they can fake surprise as well as anyone. -

Yeah, C. Affleck's past transgressions for alleged harassment issues (settled two cases out of court) may just be enough to lose the award that seemed like it's been his for about four months now. No real clear-cut favorite if it's not him though. And, yes, Viola is a lock as putting her in the Supporting Actress category seemed to be designed to do just a year after #OscarSoWhite Supporting Actor goes to Mehershala Ali Picture/Director - LaLaLand walks away with both Screenplays: Adapted is probably the big nod that ARRIVAL gets Original does the same for HELL OR HIGH WATER Oh yeah, and Emma Stone wins big. I rarely see even half of the movies/actors nominated, but I'm never wrong about these things except when I am. -
HSI,NGSI (Haven't Seen It, Not Gonna See It)
Frayed Knot replied to Frayed Knot's topic in Film Review Forum
The key phrase here is the part about this one being a "Chinese-US co-production". This makes it almost irrelevant whether it plays well on this side of the Pacific as long as it sells to the market of 1.3 billion on the other side where it can serve as a metaphor not so much for the U.S./Mexico border but for the Chinese keeping their foreigners out, either the scary ancient "monsters" for whom the wall was originally built or the more modern type in a region that's long been distrustful of outside influences and in a country which issued just 1,576 permanent residency cards last year (that's like 0.0001% of the country) and even that paltry figure represents a large increase from previous tends. Plus it's chock full of Chinese heroes and a plot where the foreign mercenary follows them instead of the other way around, all very good for Chinese self esteem. Plus Damon gets to build himself a huge new audience that he hopes will demand his participation in their movies long after he's too old to play Jason Bourne or astronauts. But, yeah, it's on the HSI-NGSI list for me too and on this one I wasn't even remotely intrigued by the trailer. -
So I was in the theatre a couple months ago and one of the coming attractions was for a historical drama involving Stalin's systematic starvation of the Ukraine in the 1930s. OK, I thought, looked pretty cool (although don't most trailers?) especially since I tend to go for movies about important events and this particular one is a largely under-emphasized even though it may have killed 20 million. I then largely forgot about it after seeing the trailer although some remnant of it remained in the back of my head somewhere. I got reminded of it this week as this is the weekend BITTER HARVEST opens. But then I see the 2/3 page ad in today's NY Times touting the flick with a photo of a young and of course beautiful couple with the tag line: Stalin's tyranny could destroy their country, but not their love Yeah, I think I'm going to skip this one. The 9% rating on 'Rotten Tomatoes' isn't exactly an inducement to go either. I mean, I realize that the flick is just out and there may be some votes still coming in from outlying precincts, but shit, even FIFTY SHADES DARKER is getting a fucking 8% 'Fresh' rating and I'm pretty sure even the folks who like that movie would, under truth serum, pretty much admit that it sucks, as did its predecessor, but they got hooked on the book(s?) and wanted to see some of the kinky shit acted out so they couldn't resist.

Those points probably would have been enough to pop him ahead of d'Arnaud on the yearly ballot, so Travis thanks your oversight too.

I probably assumed that was intentional, especially given the debate on the board over the proper credit (or not) merited by James Loney for this past season.

Another season like this past year -- 12th best player on a 90-ish win team -- would be enough for him to pass Franco, but he'd probably need to beef that up to more like a Top-Seven finish with an equally good or better team in '17 to catch Piazza, certainly not a given seeing as how he doesn't have a set position coming into the year. Considering that he's already ahead of MP in seasons as a Met (10 to 7) with around 15% more games / PAs / ABs, etc., even before tacking on whatever he'll accumulate this coming year, that they're already in the same neighborhood isn't surprising. Failing to catch him next season means that he'd then have to re-up on a new contract for '18 or beyond so that gets a little more problematic and the next jump from Piazza to Strawberry is even more substantial. I believe the Lawrence Fishburn character in APOCALYPSE NOW was named after Clean Jones.
