1. No, I haven't given up obsessing over the length and pace of games. Was just giving you folks a break for a while. But while games in 2018 were quicker than in 2017, that trend lasted for exactly one year as they're back up again in 2019, nearly to 2017 levels. 15 of the 16 games played on Saturday (there was one DH) took over 3 hours [KCR 4 - DET 1 = 2:23] Eight of them lasted longer than 3:20 And even if you want to remove the two extra inning games from the data, that's still 13 of 14 >3:00 w/six over 3:20, a total which includes two different 2-1 games and six that needed only 8-1/2 innings. The two extra inning games both took over four hours despite one being just 10 innings and the other 11 btw, the 2019 Mets played more 9-inning games by the midpoint of the season that lasted over 3:20 than did the 1984, 1985, and 1986 Mets combined. And you tell me that attendance and TV ratings are both down. You don't say?
2. In a scheduling oddity (what isn't these days?) the Mets have nearly 16% of their remaining games (11 of 69) against AL Central opponents. At first I thought it was more because I only remembered the first two games against the Twins and totally forgot about the trio they already played vs Detroit back in May. So far: 3-2 So that's two remaining against the very good Twinkies; three vs the occasionally good seriously, I just used a racist word when I really meant "Guardians", and then three each vs the weak but improving ChiSox and also the very bad Royals And speaking of bad teams, we also have seven left vs the Marlins (3 in early August then 4 in late September) with all being at CitiField Now if only we could be the phucking phillies!!
3. Wayne: Rosario is "hustling around the bases". What we saw: Rosario jogging into 2B. Scaramouch, Scaramouch, we will do the Randazzo
4. Has Keith ever said that the batter was right not to swing at what was called "strike three"? I suppose that if it were a ridiculous strike three call he would. But he was right about that one. Anderson did a whole lotta barking for a 3-2 pitch that was maybe an inch outside.
5. It's always somebody's turn to suck out of the pen this year. Let's just hope that today it's only one somebody.
6. Base hit on the first pitch of the 9th inning. Clearly the opener/starter experiment is a failure.
7. This one was pretty freaky coming as it did on the night they honored Skaggs, and with his mother throwing out the first pitch (for a hard strike btw), and with them all wearing his jersey name/number, and on the day before what would have been Skaggs's 28th birthday. Meanwhile in Baltimore, Ryan Stanek (as an opener) and Ryan Yarborough (as the 'starter') are trying to do something Nolan Ryan never did - throw a perfect game. They're perfect thru 8
8. Now with a 'hard' deadline of July 31st, a couple of hurlers are dealt to kick off this year's trading season: -- (RHP) Andrew Cashner from the O's to the BoSox -- (RHP) Homer Bailey from KCR to Oakland
9. The top of the fourth illustrated well a fourth place team playing a fifth place team. The Marlins shouldn't have allowed any runs and the Mets should've scored a bunch more. Yup. The downside to all the gifts that inning was that the Mets couldn't get the ball out of the infield. oe: And now yet another infield "hit".
10. Geeez, anyone but Ramos there scores. Now four grounders with forces available have resulted in just two outs. Not that they all could have been GiDPs but I thought the Yanquis were the only ones who run into that kind of luck. oe: FIVE grounders = 2 outs!! and NOW a big hit will really do some damage
11. Marlins IF suddenly looking like the NYM's by turning a potential three outs on two consecutive ground balls into just one out and a run scored thanks to slow play and/or poor decisions.
12. Cano is now just a triple away from a four consecutive AB cyc ... oh wait, never mind. Since hitting 27 triples over his first seven ML seasons, he has just six in the seven-plus seasons since.
13. JdG is going to be over 100 pitches by the 5th inning at this rate.
14. So for the first game of the season and the most recent, the big off-season trade has worked out real well. In between ... not so much.
15. Shyeeet, a 1-2-3 ten pitch inning. Leave Diaz on his stool.
16. Gotta win this one tonight because we have no chance tomorrow seeing as how deGrom is starting.
17. And now those dreaded words: It's in the hands of the pen.
18. So far a lot like last night's game. Mets get two early runs then do bupkis. Marlins have all of five hits but three came in a row with an error thrown in the middle of them just for good measure. And now Cano makes all that above writing meaningless just as I finished typing it.
19. Maybe we can assign different body parts to players. Like Cano being the butt of the franchise. Not sure yet who the shoulder blade of the franchise would be.
20. And yet another inning where the opposing pitcher doesn't have to retire three batters.
21. A weak grounder to 2nd with men on base by Cano. No way anyone coulda seen that coming.
22. A weak grounder to 2nd with men on base by Cano. No way anyone coulda seen that coming.
23. You knew that a 2-0 lead was a sure sign that we'd be behind before long.
24. That CS knocks Rosie down to 10/14 or 71%, right around his (brief) career average. Not horrible, but not great either. It's just part of our continuing effort to require the opposing pitcher to retire as few batters as possible and still get through his innings. There's gotta be a stat for that, outs given up on the bases: CS, GiDPs, runners caught trying to advance. I'm sure we'd be among the league leaders in that, although I suspect fans of most teams believe they are too.
25. Mazza blowing his chance at being named closer. I think he was the leading candidate after his first inning tonight.
