  2. I like that Nido busted towards 3rd rather than assuming he'd be held, even though holding him was clearly the right move.
  3. Lots of stuff to blame Cano for this year, but I'm not blaming the non-DP or the rundown on him. The one good thing he might still do well defensively is turn and throw, but it was a slow bouncer and Realmuto is likely the only catcher in MLB that beats that out. And the rundown was simply a contract play. I blame Conforto more for failing to advance to 3rd during it.
  4. Travis d'Arnaud, American hero. After the Yanx tied it up on an Aaron Hicks 2-out, 2-strike HR in the 9th in Tampa, d'Arnaud answered with a 2-out walk-off HR in the bottom of the 9th About time the Rays showed up. The first two games of this series ended with Tampa losing 8-4 in 10 innings and then 8-4 in 11 innings. One wouldn't think that was possible. btw, if you want an explanation of the Yanx dominance in the AL East look no further than the head-to-heads vs BOS: 6-1 vs BAL: 10-2 (OK, that one is to be expected) vs TOR: 4-2 vs TBR: 9-2 (now 9-3). Are you fucking kidding me Rays?!? THIS is your attempt to be taken seriously with the big boys? So overall that's 29-8 in division
  5. You'd like to see your pitchers average around 15 pitches or fewer per inning, or five per each out recorded. Diaz & Familia tonight have combined for 38 pitches to record just two outs. That this means neither will likely be available for tomorrow's game may or may not be a bad thing.

  8. This is at least three outings this season where Diaz has allowed multiple runs in a save situation before even recording a second out. He's not just blowing saves, he's destroying them.
  9. It's a deGrom game, things aren't allowed to go right.
  10. Frayed Knot wrote: But did anyone here see that call in live time and think he was out? I didn't either. They need to re-think how plays are reviewed, I think they need to revamp things too. This current 'one and beg' system means you've either got a selective limit or no limit at all. I've said before that I'd be willing to go to two challenges per game but only if the call to go to review were made immediately w/o the whole 'directive from above' nonsense. That, at least, would stop reviews on those hair-splitting calls early in games.
  11. But did anyone here see that call in live time and think he was out? I know I didn't. Ramos didn't seem to react. And no one in the booth said a word until after they saw the 'foot bounce' via the slo-mo replay.
  12. The other point is: who was the dummy who thought the Frazier challenge was a good idea? Mickey doesn't decide those things. No manager makes those calls.
  13. The problem is that there are no guidelines as to why or even if the umps go to a crew review. It's totally at their discretion and with a 'naked eye' call that seemed correct (throw was clearly late) there was no reason for them to think it was wrong and if they are going to be swayed by the passion of the manager then there becomes essentially no situation where they wouldn't go to a review at which point there's no longer a one per game limit. But only Mattingly, it seems, gets seven per game.
  14. So I guess only Mattingly gets 7 challenges per game.
  15. In addition to the oddity of teams having an off day on July 4, four teams are off today -- on a Friday -- including, for whatever reason, both Chicago teams and both Ohio teams.
  16. Phils be slippin'. After peaking at 3.5 games up in mid-May and starting June at still 2.0 in 1st, they spiraled into an 11-17 month of June and just came out of Atlanta losers of 2 of 3 so far in July. Their 3.5 game lead is now a -6.5 as they've been passed by both the Braves and Nationals, 6.0 games ahead of us. Last night they jumped out to 4 runs in the top of the 1st but were losing by the 2nd and wound up on the wrong end of a 12-6 drubbing. Bryce Harper is 8th on their team, and 6th among position players, in WAR (1.4). Basically he's Conforto this year [bH = .252, 16 HRs in 380 PA; MC = .247/16/335] only with a few more walks [58 to 46] and lots more drama and hair flips. Aaron Nola seems to have gotten his act straight lately and has been great over his last three starts [23 IP, 2R (1 ER) allowed on 11 hits, 5 BB vs 28 K]. We'll see him on Sunday vs Wheeler

To shy away and/or back out on a previous commitment because the team is in a slump, on the other hand, looks particularly bad. Fair, but my point wasn't that he kept a promise/commitment, it was the venue that the commitment was in. Would it have been better served being in a section closer to his suite if he had to be called away for an urgent call or something that couldn't wait until the morning? I'd probably say that would have been a better look than the section behind center. Though now that I think of it, aren't the actual offices right there, which would be more appropriate to go to for conducting business than the suite I guess. I think it was more the overt spectacle of it that makes it cringe worthy than if it was somewhere else in the park, or like at a bar/restaurant party setting. Ya totally lost me here, Steve-O
  18. The Dodgers have won each of their last five home games via walk-offs - 6/21; 4-2 vs COL: a 2-out 2R HR by rookie Matt Beaty (~ his 60th ML AB) - 6/22; 5-4 vs COL: a 1-out 11th inning HR by technical rookie (cups o' joe in 2017-18) Alex Verdugo - 6/23; 6-3 vs COL: a 2-out 3R Pinch-Hit HR by rookie Will Smith (his 22nd ML AB) - 7/2; 5-4 vs ARZ: the five-walk debacle after two were out and none on, as mentioned earlier in this thread - 7/3; 5-4 vs ARZ: a one-out 10th inning HR by Cody Bellinger - this was after forcing extra innings with a run in the 9th In between those two home stands they had a week-long road trip vs the same two teams and posted a 3-4 record They start a four game stretch at home vs SDP tonight

  20. Two nights in a row with slow covering pitchers at 1st
  21. So the closing week of the '1st Half' finds a bullpen performance that says: 'You think YOUR pen is bad?' Rox go into the bottom of the 9th at Chavez Ravine leading the Dodgers by one. Greg Holland gets the first two outs and then with two outs and none on ... Walk - Walk - Walk - Game-Tying Walk [Pitching Change: in comes T.J. McFarland] - Walk-off Walk
